I suppose somebody from the legislature or the president of their supreme court should take charge until a byelection is held, but given how quirky state legislation is in the US I wouldn't bet on it.

Just to clarify: the Lieutenant Governor, actual second-in-line, has a sexual assault allegation. The attorney general has just admitted that he did a blackface.

In my view the attorney general has actually shown the correct way to address these things: preemptively. It's likely that he made the calculation that someone would find out about it if he didn't bring it up, but the way he has handled it imo shows integrity.
