Colbert made a very distasteful joke during a monologue about president trump saying the only thing his mouth is good for is as putin's [euphemism for male genitalia] holder.

A lot of people are calling the joke homophobic and an insult to minority groups. Which it is, since it's clearly meant to portray a homosexual act as derogatory.

So I'm pretty shocked the cbs networks hasn't done something to him, maybe not fired but at least suspended or put out some sort of statement and forced him to make an apology.

Not matter what your view on the president is, this is extremely distasteful and an insult to the office. You would never see anyone dare say this about obama or even bush. Hollywood just thinks cus it's trump it's open season and it's wrong. People shouldn't talk about anyone this way but much less the president.

And now I will prep myself for all your responses on how hypocritical it is since trump has said nasty things and brought this on himself and how you will all use that to justify your position, ie hate breeds hate. I am not a trump supporter, I think he has said some terrible things and is not going to make a good president policy wise either. But that doesn't excuse this kind of behavior and we need to rise above it. I mean it's the president's office for goodness sake, you aren't winning back any supporters with these kind of jokes, and this kind of hollywood elitist attitude that excuses this behavior as acceptable is part of why trump won, because people are so angry at the left.

It's not the first time he made this joke. And yeah, regardless of uber-clown Trump, imo Colbert is sort of detrimental to what is going on as well, albeit from his own position as a tv host instead of a former tv host turned potus ;)

I agree that Colbert is part of the problem. Yet there are so many problems by now that maybe things can't change anyway.

I don't see why saying derogatory things about a president is worse than saying derogatory things about anyone else. That's not to say I think what Colbert said is OK, but the job of the person he said it about is irrelevant.

No doubt you, just like Faux News, will be pretending that he hasn't already put out a statement acknowledging that he went too far.

Obviously Trump's mouth serves a critical function similar to a relief valve. If he weren't continuously venting his stupidity pressure could build up and cause an explosion.

He must be fired, jailed, humiliated and all copies of his books, DVDs, every product he has made or endorsed put into a great big bonfire. Then we must take out our torches and pitchforks and hunt down everyone ever affiliated with him and force them to denounce him and/or be burned at the stake.

Why insult the Office of Ivanka's Intern? She has not indicated one way or another on Trump's performance in that office.

This is a joke, right?

It's oral sex - an act that has never been particularly homosexual in nature - that's being portrayed in a derogatory way. The fact that the oral sex happens to be between two men is not relevant to the joke, as anybody who is not a hapless political hack would know if they were honest with themselves for even half a second.

The fact that the people portraying this as homophobia are the same people who turn around and support "religious freedom" bills that allow people to freely discriminate demonstrate full well that there is no honest offense here - only hypocrites pretending to care about gays because it's convenient to them right now.

At least, you admit that your real beef is "insult to the presidency". And you know what? The president is fair game for insults. More than fair game. He's the fairest game for insults there is - the one person above all others that we must be free to insult, if we are to live in a free country.

Really? They're the same people?

Lots of them are.

Liiiike?

I thought Colbert was classier than this.

Men aren't the only ones who engage in such acts. It could be two women, or one man and one woman.

No doubt his bosses are discussing this right now.

In which alternate universe were you living during Obama's presidency? Even here in Canada, we heard all kinds of disgusting things said about him. As for Bush, I recall a lot of jokes referring to his lack of intellect and problems stringing coherent sentences together. So don't try to claim that nobody said extremely derogatory things about either of them.

World leaders in general seem to be targets of derogatory, offensive things. We're not immune to that here; if I had a dollar for every time someone posts on CBC.ca that Justin Trudeau is really the son of one of the Rolling Stones instead of Pierre Trudeau, I could pay my rent and utilities for at least six months. Of course these people never seem to remember that Margaret Trudeau wasn't partying with the Rolling Stones until Justin was already born and had been alive for several years... not to mention that all anyone has to do is look at him and it's obvious who his father was.

Respect for the office is ideally what people should have, regardless of who holds that office. Of course, it's expected that the officeholder will have respect for the people, which in Trump's case, he's demonstrated that he feels nothing but contempt for people who don't support him and his ideas.

This will get sorted out by the CBS bosses. Colbert will either be fired, made to apologize, or there are other possible remedies.

For example, one of Canada's hockey commentators (Don Cherry) had an 8-second delay imposed on his comments, since he said one too many derogatory, offensive things, and the producers wanted to be able to bleep out anything he might let slip in future.

Because we should have some amount of respect for the office of the president and what it represents. Of course you can disagree, which is really what this is about. Similarly I wouldn't make these kind of insults about other world leaders or religious leaders. I guess some people don't have the same lines to cross.

No doubt you, just like Faux News, will be pretending that he hasn't already put out a statement acknowledging that he went too far.

Has he? In the articles I linked he said he would make the statement again and boasted about still being the host of the late show.

A quote of Colbert after the fact:

"While I would do it again, I would change a few words that were cruder than they needed to be,” he said. “I’m not going to repeat the phrase. But I just want to say, for the record, life is short, and anyone who expresses their love in their own way, is to me an American hero. I think we can all agree on that. I hope even the president and I can agree on that. Nothing else. But, that."

He's just backpeddaling trying to remove the offense to gays. That's what he has apologized for, not for insulting the decency of the president.

I never suggested such a thing. I don't think he should even be fired but suspended maybe, or at least chastised publicly by his bosses. I mean guys we live in a world where a ceo of a sneaker company said he liked trump cus he thinks trump is good for american businesses and immediately twitter lit up with a bunch of athletes with sponsorship deals distancing themselves from those remarks and chastising the guy who made them. And he didn't even say anything blatantly offensive.

Men aren't the only ones who engage in such acts. It could be two women, or one man and one woman.

Colbert used it in reference to too men in a derogatory way. It was a gay joke plain and simple. I don't know how you can dispute that. You can try to spin it as calling someone gay shouldn't be offensive cus there's nothing bad about it, but it clearly was used in a derogatory way.

I never heard major network anchors say anything so foul about any president before as I have heard about trump. Remarks privately or anonymously on message boards? Sure. Of course there's always foul mouthed people everywhere making bad jokes. I don't read canadian news so I wouldn't have heard any of those remarks about Trudeau. All I can say is that crosses the line too.

The worst I'd hear about Obama was mostly from conservative talk show hosts who would call him an idiot and a communist. But communist is a political opinion and calling someone an idiot cus you think he did something stupid is maybe not the nicest but not nearly on this level.

I never watch the late show or CBS anyway. I used to like Colbert a little on comedy central but never watched regularly.

It's just indicative of a greater problem within main stream media. With obama we just had to put up with some whining from fringe right wing talk show hosts and fox news. Now it's like everyone at any new outlet just heaping on the filthy comments.

Are y'all right wingers looking for a safespace?

"Offense to gays" my left foot.

Derogatory references to oral sex are a long established part of the English language (to represent one person abasing themselves before another), and have little to do with gender. It's the act of oral sex itself that's used in derogatory reference. Pretending that the expression in question (su...king up) is worse when used in the context of a man to another man is a load of utter bollock.

Pretending otherwise is very much an act of hypocrisy. Perhaps not pro-Trump hypocrisy in your case ; but definitely pro-presidency hypocrisy. Your real beef, as you've made clear, is the insult to the presidency. "Homophobia" is just a convenient battle cry you're trying to use because you think the presidency should be respected.

The presidency should never receive special protection (either legal or social) from insults and attacks. It is the most powerful position in our society. Combine under attack when the holder screws up is the burden that comes with that power.
