Computer Questions Not Worth Their Own Thread II

Yeah, its just hard to tell if thats one process though.

What would happen if you had two multi-core-utilization, intensive programs and set each one affinity to different cores. Would it run better than if you had just left them to each try to use multiple cores.

That's above my pay grade. Sorry:(

Thats what I figured.

Question: Is there a program that will list all the different filetypes in a selected set of folders and subfolders? Bonus points if it can also detect the combined sizes, but thats not as important.

Question:
My friends laptop is not turning on at all. I don't know whether it is a problem with the charger not charging the batery so the laptop is dead or if the laptop itself is broken. I can't test the theory of whether the charger is broken because his laptop has this wierd charger and adapter. Because the school tech desk was monumentally unhelpful, is there anything I can do to try and figure out what is the broken part, or does he just have to take it into the store to have someone look at it?

Try removing the battery and re-inserting it, then try turning it on/charging it again.

Can't you try to turn it on while it is plugged in?

I don't know about all laptops, but with mine it won't work if the battery is out of place, even if it's plugged in.
This has not been my experience; I even tried taking out the battery of my laptop just now while it's on, this didn't do anything (except to the battery meter).

What do you mean by charger? You can test the AC adapter by using a multimeter to verify that the output voltage matches the spec. This is safe as long as you're dry.

The second most common problem with a laptop not turning on is a damaged power port (The first is water spilled on it). If you can jiggle the power port with the cord, then that port is likely damaged. You might be able to get the PC to start if you hold it the right way.

Beyond that, you'd need to take the laptop apart to find out more.

I'm still waiting for an answer.

The auto-load is especially irritating when I read a news article on certain news sites and the video auto-loads AND auto-plays.

Did try Flashblock? I don't remember if it works on YouTube though. I think they use HTML5 which makes things tricky.

I do have NoScript, but I dunno if it can specifically target just videos in the manner I'm describing above, without sacrificing the other stuff on the page that I happen to have unblocked. :dunno:

Already tried that, nothing happened.

Thanks. If that doesn't work it looks like my friend will have to take the laptop in because I'm certiantly not taking it apart.

What is the best way to record and distribute a website demonstration, for me to talk over on a conference call? I could do this in powerpoint, but the files would be very big.

I reakon for a 10 minute presentation I would need 60 to 80 images, I would guess that would be about 15Mb if using full screenshots each time. I would put it on youtube, but I want way to say if interupted "go back t point X, and start now" and everyone be in time.

I've been working on a computer that had a virus. I disabled the virus using msconfig, installed MSE, and then ran a scan. It appears the virus's files have been removed however it still has startup entries listed in msconfig that attempt to launch the dll's gfbbytrc and iosvqhlh. How do I remove these startup entries so that it no longer tries to launch the virus? Thank you
Everything listed in msconfig:
Spoiler :
Startup Item gfbbytrc Command rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\gfbbytrc.dll",b Location SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Startup Item iosvqhlh Command Rundll.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\iosvqhlh.dll",s Location SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Edit: CCleaner did the trick

Well, might be worth a try. Doesnt block everything, but gets a good portion:

I used to use an old addon called Stop Autoplay but it's quit working in recent versions of Firefox, unfortunately. :(

Anyone do ATSC over-the-air digital PC onto their PC?

What's your favorite way of doing it?

I realize there are ~$100 ways of doing it through a HDMI to any TV or monitor (if it doesn't have a tv receiver build in already), but I want a more economical way of doing it through the PC. I'm also aware of the usual HULU, what not, but I want to receive local tv.

I've noticed most devices are either a PCI card or an external USB device which makes me wonder if 2.0 USB can produce an acceptable frame rate for a tv broadcast.
