Computer Questions Not Worth Their Own Thread II

Try CCCP Insurgent if you're interested in fixing it.
I ran that after I removed K-Lite and it said I had no Codec Packs installed.
If it was a single file, most likely a problem with just that one (or it didn't have sound.) I use VLC for trouble files like that, MPC for most others (because for some reason VLC doesn't have the same quality)

It worked fine on this pc before, and it worked on my laptop just fine as well, so it wasnt the file.

Hmm, maybe it got corrupted somehow. But that wouldn't explain why it worked with the other codec

OK, Windows 7 is on sale at Staples. I *might* be able to talk mom into it. Should I?

Any specific reasons, or just feeling contary?

Considering you can still get your hands on the beta, and get a legal key for it ( as far as I know)

And yes, unless Vista is horribly, horribly broken for you, to the point of not being able to use your computer, dont even think about getting 7.

Actually you can't get the RC download or a key anymore, legitimately, unless you already got it previously.

EDIT -- doh, its Oct 22, so yeah, they just stopped allowing RC keys. Well, if you didnt get your copy of a key by now, what rock have you been under for the last year?

Well the main thing is, that I'll most likely be getting it eventually, but should I wait?

Question: Suppose you just visit the Pirate Bay (e.g. to read about the trial) without downloading anything. Can you get in trouble for that, or only if you download?

OK, suppose you have a partially corrupted image that is openable in IrfanView or something. It's only corrupted at the very bottom and not worth deleting, yet a lot of programs refuse to use it. If you can't open it in image editors, how do you "trim" off the bad part?

I did try making screencap but there's probably a better way thst I haven't thought of.

EDIT: Also can't find image online.

ANOTHER EDIT: I did google it, there was a site that looked useful but when I opened it I got a bunch of garbled characters. (At least I did find something, although ... well you get the idea.)

If you can open it in irfanview, you can crop it there and save it as a new image...
Make a selection with the mouse -> Edit->Crop

The other alternative is to familiarize yourself with the image format and edit out the bad parts with a hex editor.

I never thought of doing that in Irfanview, thanks.

All right, I'm back from Estonia. I just bought a Finnish computer magazine, with a cd that has mediamonkey on it. Does anyone have any experience of it?

Silly question: I have Upgrade version of Vista. Is it possible to "upgrade" from the same OS you're on? I mean to make it go to the Windows.old folder.
