Morell noted separately on Thursday that if the virus leaked from a Wuhan lab, the U.S. would
shoulder some of the blame since it funded research at that lab through government grants from
2014-2019.

“If it did escape from the lab, not only bad on China but also bad on the U.S. for giving funding
to a lab with safety concerns,” Morell said, referring to State Department cables from early
2018 that warned of the lab’s risky coronavirus experiments and shortage of trained technicians.

Regarding some of those State Dept. cables:

Wuhan virus: Was US money used to fund risky research in China?
As the debate continues over the origins of the coronavirus, a fresh row has erupted over virus research being
carried out in China using US funds.

It's linked to the unproven theory that the virus could have leaked from a lab in Wuhan, the Chinese city where
it was first detected.

This idea centres on research carried out on bat viruses at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

Republican Senator Rand Paul alleges that US money was used to fund research there that made some viruses
(not the coronavirus) more infectious and more deadly, known as "gain-of-function".

But his assertion has been firmly rejected by Dr Anthony Fauci, the US infectious diseases chief.

IIRC there were about 300 former US military types in Wuhan for some kind of sports event just before
the first Covid outbreaks. Hope some of them didn't unwittingly spread it to Italy.

Or back to Fort Detrick as some are already starting to claim. :)
