Craig Said to Consider Not Resigning

He can't run again. Do you really think people in Idaho will vote for him? That's just going to end with the Republicans losing the state for the first time in, IIRC*, something like 50 years, and that would be pretty embarrassing for them.

* - I'm not sure if the 50 years is for presidential or senatorial elections.

I'm still not convinced he was soliciting sex in an airport bathroom...

I'm still not convinced he was soliciting sex in an airport bathroom...

Can you think of some other conceivable explanation for what he did?

The Ethics Committee not calling off the investigation is, I suspect, exactly the reason for Craig's turnaround and pseudo-withdrawal of his resignation. If I were him, I'd do the same (whether or not I really was gay and/or soliciting random airport bathroom sex) - I mean, setting aside the fact of whether the Idaho voters would re-elect him now (I'm guessing not), since when does a misdemeanor like this affect his service as a US Senator? More to the point, how is this 'crime' unethical?

I think Craig is telling the Republican leadership in no uncertain terms: if they want a resignation from him, they can drop all the political :deadhorse: ing and just let him fade to black, not have the Ethics Committee hammering away at him for another few months.

I got an idea, instead of talking about a non-story, why don't we focus on Hillary's illegal, fugitive donor?

I think it's funny that everyone here wants him purged. For what reason? He's a hypocrite! So who here supports John Edwards? As already pointed out, what about William Jefferson? Nobody here is bothered by the fact that congress is purging a congressman for playing footsy in a bathroom, yet the Democrats have stood steadfastly behind William Jefferson who was caught red handed by the FBI accepting cash?

Better yet, how about Barbara Boxer funneling tens of millions, (even possibly a BILLION) dollars to her husbands firms while she was chairperson on Defense Spending and Appropriations Committee.

It's amazing, Democrats can do no wrong, and they get away with it. Craig went out, played footsy, something that really shouldn't even be illegal in the first place (ever gone to the bar or club and solicited for sex?). What he did had no bearing on his job. Even though he is gay, it hasn't stopped him from representing his state for DECADES. Even though he is gay he has steadfastily voted by the voice of the people that he has represented. Yet, for some ridiculous reason, Democrats and Republicans have purged him.

But really, I love how the media has eseentially completely ignored and given a free pass to Hillary's campaign finance whoa's, and put Craig in the limelight for a week now. So shameless.

 LAMO
"Ethics Committee Rejects Craig's Request To Call Off Investigation"

ahhhh Mobboss GOLD :goodjob:

Well, lets put it this way. If the congressional ethics committee cant get rid of people like Barney Frank, who allowed a male prostitution ring to be run out of his own apartment, then Craig probably doesnt have much to worry over the ethics committee making threats.

Craig has lawyered up and this guy will more than likely show how many senators that have had similar prior misdemeanors against which no action was taken at all and make his case.

I mean really.....does what Craig did have any real significance when compared to say....Kennedy at Chappaquiddick?

Larry Craig was just probably hacked off at his fellow Republicans for not giving him the same pass they gave Senator Vitter. Better to pay for a woman than toe tap for a man.

Nothing to do with an inherit bias; sex scandals simply sell more. That should be rather obvious.

The only media outlet that covered Jim McGreevy scandal was Rush Limbaugh. And he was trying install his boy toy into a high ranking security position...

This isn't even a sex scandal. There was no sex. This was footsy.

I saw the McGreevy story on several networks and read about it in several papers.

 A family values guy is trying to get some sex in a public bathroom and it isn't a sex scandal.

I'm pretty sure you're imagining things. It might have been around for a day, and in a "Ohhhh, how cute, he's gay, we support you Jim" sort of way, but there were bigger fish for the media to fry then.

That's funny. I thought for sure, that in order for there to be a sex scandal, there had to be some sex.

I'm not imagining things, you are. Rush Limbaugh got the story only after it appeared on the AP wire.

You thought wrong. Solicitation for sex can create a sex scandal.

HA! Oh yeah, appearing on the AP wire = what's happened to Craig.

Like I said, the media gave McGreevy a free, and might I add, sympathetic pass. Even though the real story wasn't even that he was gay, but that he tried installing his boy toy to a cabinet position.

Wow. Who knew I was involved in a sex scandal.

What a world we live in when soliciting for sex in a public place can get you purged from your place of work.

Everyone had best stop going to bars I guess.

I'm pretty sure the public expectation of public officals demands them to not be man-whores.

By appearing on the AP wire, it got reported on all the major networks and in all the major newspapers. Rush wasn't the only one who covered the story. Interesting in the differences that Rush has taken on the Craig story than the McGreevy story now that you mention it.

Have you ever attempted to pick up a sex partner in a public restroom? Have you ever known anybody arrested for hitting on someone in a bar? Have you ever plead guilty to disorderly conduct? Do you hold a job as high profile as U.S. Senator? Answers to those questions may explain why you have never been involved in a sex scandal and Senator Craig is.

Well, if they can force Craig to resign as has been on all the news....why cant they force Jefferson to resign?

Most likely it is because Jefferson has yet to be convicted of his felonies, while Craig did plead guilty to his misdemeanor.

But it sure does look out of whack doesnt it? Jefferson with his 16 counts from the Grand Jury still going strong....and Craig with his misdemeanor being censured by the rest of congress. Crazy.

Nobody forced Craig to resign. The RNC had drafted a letter asking Craig to resign, but never sent it. The fact is, a sex scandal, especially an icky one like this, gets people more pissed off than having money in the freezer. The only people who can actually FORCE Craig to resign would be his constituents (if they can recall him, or by raising enough of a stink back home that it becomes apparent that he's done. Newspapers in Idaho are calling on him to quit), and Craig himself.

Craig doesn't have the support of his home state, or GOP leadership.

The legality of this doesn't matter, the morality of this doesn't matter. What's important is that a Senator from a super conservative state who used family values as an issue is actually gay and was soliciting sex from strangers in an airport.

If he wants to help the Republican party, he has to resign and allow his replacement to run as incumbent, in the hope that other scandals will make voters forget this one.

Good lord, this statement is full of crap.

I very much remember reading about this on CNN. Lowandbehold... I found this old CNN article in my first search. The CNN was the 2nd hit, right after the wiki article. As you can see, rather easily, from the link I gave, they covered it pretty extensively.

Also, a cursory read of the wiki sourcing has multiple NYT and Star Ledger sources.

Next time you toss out ridiculous assertions you may want to spend 1 minute googling to save some embarrassment.

As I recall, McGreevy stepped down and did so rather quickly.

Part of your misperception comes from the very different way that McGreevy and Craig handled their problems. McGreevy just came out and said "yep I am gay" and this radically shifted the emphasis of the story. Whereas Craig is literally screaming "I AM NOT GAY" and takes on a very defensive posture, so of course the stories about him are going to reflect this. Its all of his own making.

Please stay Larry. We need your strong "not gay" leadership in the Senate.

This statement was approved by the DNC.
