CrezNES - Another Return to Our Roots

To the Dani

Our king died 40 years ago under captivity (age 70) before you invaded. He never had any offspring except Prince Ronald, who leads the Army. Your foul hands ripped the royal blood of London down and turned London into ruins. Nevermore shall you rape and incest! Nevermore! Take up your arms citizens and together, we will push them past the Sea!

To the Channel Throne Usurpers
Lies, the King died 20 years ago, at age of 93.
After we rescued him he had a further 23 offsprings, 14 males and 9 females.
He disowed Ronald the Betrayer after he learned that it the Kidnapping was oraganized by his supportes so that he might become King.
By law the throne then passed his son Magnus the Brave, whom Married our last despots daughter, Ingrid. Sadly Magnus died 7 years before the invasion so his throne passed to his son, Ragnar the Young, whom recently married our new despot's daughter, Helga.
Should he die childless the claim to the throne will pas to one of the other bloodlines of the Betrayed King.

My culture will wreak havok with your vikings, deserting and all...
You confuse culture with leadership, we are not fighting your culture, in fact in many ways we (will) embrace it.
Its very much like the Mongol conquest of China, where the Mongol Yuan Dynasty replaced the Song Dynasty, Our dynasty will rule the Channel Union, or its successor state.

I wanted to see how I would fare militarily against Amon Savag. How would you have suggested I go about it?

Didn't we play a game of Diplomacy where I completely outmaneuvered your Russia as Germany? I was hoping that would be enough.

You know... If you look at any of the NESes I've been in, sure I've got good military skills... And that makes me a "good" NESer. What makes a "great" NESer, is the ability to apply these military skills with a certain amount of statesmanship to bring a country to greatness, under any circumstances. All those NESes are documented. The greatest example is Kamilian's World Conflict NES which I refer everyone to, where I wrote an essay at the end explaining "Yes, I did whip alot of ass militarilly... But there is alot more to the story than simply sending armies to and fro" basically.

Quite frankly, I'd appreciate for a NESer that is going to challenge me at least have proven themselves to be a "good" NESer... Which you have yet to do. I'm glad you've got it out of your system, however. What say you to a game of chess for your next challenge?

Diplomacy and NESing are different things, firstly. Secondly, I agree with you that military skills aren't all that makes a great NESer- but the reason I challenged you was because of your military reputation.

On the third point, got you. I admit that there's a good case for me being the worst NESer in history. On the fourth point, if you actually want to o.k, but I'm out of practice at chess.

Lies, Our scouts seen the truth. (That is what I spent the money I would have given to you on.) They saw him in the dungeon and they saw him dead 20 years before your invasion. (20 years before now) They saw that he was not noticed until dead, which he was stuffed and such. OOC:Also, if the Kidnapping was organized my Ronald, then it should be in my orders!

Also, we didn't betray him, He betrayed us by not leading his soldiers and swimming in luxury as our soldiers fought his war. He was kidnapped, you are liers.

Good to know, but if that, then of course your far away (more than a few hundred miles) homeland might revolt in itself.

Lies, Our scouts seen the truth. (That is what I spent the money I would have given to you on.)
So you bought a testimony to back your lies, good for your.

They saw him in the dungeon and they saw him dead 20 years before your invasion. (20 years before now)
First it was 40 years, now it is 20? Your lies do not hold against our truth.

After you failed to ransom your own Leaders the Barbarians came to us, we payed the ransom and all the leaders lived free amongst us.

They saw that he was not noticed until dead, which he was stuffed and such. OOC:Also, if the Kidnapping was organized my Ronald, then it should be in my orders! Also, we didn't betray him, He betrayed us by not leading his soldiers and swimming in luxury as our soldiers fought his war. He was kidnapped, you are liers.

Lies, the Barbarians told us everything. It was the men of Ronald the Betrayer that hired the Barbarians to kill your leaders, they opened the gates of London and allowed the city to be sacked. But the barbarians got greedy and instead of Killing your leaders they kidnapped them and demanded more money, when the money failed to be delivered they sold them to us.

OOC: Of course i was behind the raid and kidnapping, but i played it so that your own leaders wouldn't know. I didn't originally plan to invade you but your actions, reforming the government instead of ransoming your leaders, made it possible for me to spin my actions to make the raids seem like a Conspiracy by your new leaders to usurp power from the old ones.

Good to know, but if that, then of course your far away (more than a few hundred miles) homeland might revolt in itself.
They must be very angry that all that loot is coming their way! But seriously, notthing in history backs that theory, and even if that happens it will be a nuisance at best.

20 years before start of invasion. Then 20 years after the Invasion is today. That is 40 years ago. If you can't listen don't speak.

Also, the Ransom money would allow them to hire enough mercenaries to kill us all. We delt with ransomers in 3600 and 3800 B.C.E. in London.

Ronald isn't head of government. Also he was 8 years old. We are resiliant, so we survived without them.

@ Czech, conquered cities shouldnot immediatly offer production because most of the citizens will just run away. I would follow this even if I conquered a city.

@Charles: Conquered cities lose production from the conquered, and do not offer production to the conqueror until a peace is signed or the conquered is entirely defeated.

Nigh is the deadline. Starting update now. ETA: 3 hours.

The Channel Affair
The war across the Channel picked up heat this year as Channel Union armies and Dani vikings clashed on the battlefield. The Channel Union, eager to push the barbarians from their land, fought with vigor against the elite and amphibious viking invaders. Dani, in the meanwhile, believing in its stated purpose of restoring the Channel monarchy, was equally motivated as the conflict exploded.

All across the union, partisan units began to form as commoners picked up arms to combat the Dani. Likewise, in Eltiland, militiamen from the hills came to assist the Union in its war. In Britain, the Union forces burnt fields and fields of crop around London and within days' march of Dani forces, in order to starve them in the eventuality of an offensive. Dani, however, did not advance from London, meaning the burning was all for naught. Union morale was unharmed, however, and instead an assault was staged to regain control of the Thames and Southend in general, to choke the Viking garrison in London. Unpredictable Union tactics enabled them to surprise troops stationed in the north-half of the Thames, and in the Battle of Southend numerically superior Union forces captured the better half of the Thames from Viking control. Quickly the Vikings regrouped in London as Union forces seized control of the outskirts, and a final Battle of London occurred just east of London as the zealous Union commander assaulted the city head-on. Union forces managed to push the Vikings from the city and destroyed one viking division, causing the remainder of the Dani expedition to be cut off from supply in the lands west of London. Completely surrounded by Union forces, it looks grim for Dani in the British theater.

Across the Channel, the Dani attempted a daring assault on Flanders and encountered stiff Union resistance. Partisan and regular defenders held firm on the city and the Battle of Flanders resulted in a viking failure. The vikings, unable to punch through Union forces, had to retreat with two-thirds of their army. The Union was quick to follow and pursued the vikings south to the Seine, however were unable to further damage the vikings.

In the Channel itself, the new Union navy attacked the Dani ships and successfully routed the entire Dani expeditionary navy. Fortunately for the Dani, those ships had already successfully returned loot to Copenhagen. Without naval support, the vikings will need to rely on their rafts to make it home if indeed they plan to retreat, and it seems as though the Dani operation could be in jeopardy. (-2 vikings for Dani, -1 militia, -2 stone army for Union, +3 gold for Dani)

Nippo-Sino War
Wu imperial forces were quick to attack Nippon this century and kicked it off with a speedy, aggressive motion against the Nipponese colony in China. The small Nipponese garrison was overwhelmed by a massive Wu assault force almost four times the size. The Wu destroyed the Nipponese forces there and captured the colony, and immediately began to assimilate it.

The war didn't end there, however. At sea, the new Wu Imperial Navy (WIN) attacked the much smaller Nipponese navy, chasing it all the way to Taiwan before finally destroying it in a skilled pincer movement.

This has established Wu as the dominant power in east Asia, but with Nipponese forces remaining in southeast China any end could ultimately be in sight.

RANDOM EVENT: Skilled Hellenic merchants cause a sudden economic boom in the Republic. (+2 growth points)

The Cadredec Dynasty- Introduction
The state of Jasiran was theoretically a democracy, with "popular votes" electing a Parliament on behalf of the people (not that the elections were, in practice, fair or equal- most people didn't have the time to vote).

But this was a mere concession to the ex-city state of Bradios- in practice, as even Parliament itself acknowledged, the real power was the President- a hereditary role held by the Nacarites throughout the rise of Jasiran. A King in all but name, the President dictated the course of policy, with badgering and "statements of non-opposition" to popular revolts as all Parliament could do.

Therefore, the history of Presidents was the history of dynasties- and of Kings. The Kings of the Cadredec dynasty established several keys to future Jasiran power and sucess, increasing their strength significantly. This is their story...

Part 1- The Ascension of Shalmasere II (Beginnings)
The Cadredecs had began as the primary representatives of the Abos, the ethnic group who had once dominated the major city-state of the same name. This gave them significant influence (if not real power), in the capital- a city which itself was founded on the ruins of Abos. They held roughly 50% of the land there, in concessions won for not revolting.

Shalmasere I wished to consolidate the territories and create a unified culture (Jasiran had no word for "national" but that was roughly the idea he was looking for). To begin with, he was determined to either assimiliate or exterminate the Abos- revolts at the capital had distracted his predecessor from affairs of the rest of the state.

His first measure was to create tax concessions for Abos. This appeased the capital, but led to the Jasiran revolt (the Jasirans, as well as being the state, were the nomadic ethnicity which had originally forged the Empire). The future Shalmasere II attempted a revolt in the capital, but was shouted down.

For some peverse reason, Shalamasere "II" blamed the President for this failure, and his tax cuts. He was determined to get revenge- not only Shalmasere I's life, but his throne. Going into hiding, he decided to lie in wait- he assumed an opportunity would arise eventually, although he considered the prospects for his lifetime hopeless. But in this he was wrong...

Shalmasere I's reign would hit continuing problems. The Parliamentary Revolt (2351) should have been put down quickly, but a lack of decisiveness on the day led to a draw in actual battle. By subsequently withdrawing (even though he had slightly greater forces), Shalmasere admitted defeat and effectively ended his reign.

The Jasiran "civil war" then began- a mix of independence movements and those who genuinely wanted the lot, as well as ones where the situation was more ambigious. Pursuing the former President's forces, Shalmasere was defeated in battle at Crag point (2343) in his "comeback" to politics- renewing his obsession for vengance. At this point, he formulated a tactical doctrine- that rather then fight over the nomads (as the three major competitors did), he would take over the agricultural lands and cities and repel all comers.

He started off by fleeing to the lands of the Tourans, outside Renshid (the third city conquered by the Jasirans). Learning to speak a little Touran himself, he attempted to appeal with the prospect of an independent Touran state- which, by now, had not existed for roughly a century. Suprisingly, this actually worked- Toura was that put under his domain.

By 2340, the man who already called himself Shalamasere II had forged an empire from Renshid to Abos, if with significant security threats from inland. Earning the backing of Parliament and promising it would not be abused like earlier reigmes, he managed to make an ally in Bradios as well. It was not justified yet, but already they fancied they had restored the Empire...

Carthage before the Sicilian War

The city of Carthage was built on piracy. Unlike other people who has a unifying religion or culture the Carthaginians had none, despite building one of the most magnificent cities of the ancient world. It was built out of whatever the merchants of the Mediterranean dared to ships across the treacherous waters. Sicilian pottery, Tartessan cloth, Hellenic ornaments. Everything found a place within the great pirate city.

As did everyone. There were no questions asked of anyone who came to Carthage looking for a job. There were always ships ready to take to sea and see what the fortune had in store for them, and if a newcomer wanted to join and earn his fair share of the loot, all the better. Farmers who were discontent with their harvests, sons who feuded with their fathers, scoundrels and romantics, murderers and rascals, everyone found a place in Carthage.

Not everyone succeeded. It took a lot of skill and luck to work your way to be respected around the cutthroat city. Some saved enough money to buy their own ships, most others perished somewhere at the bottom of the sea. Some eventually bought more than one ship and built a fleet, a dynasty. These families were the closest thing Carthage had to a government. A number of strong families that have proven their worth over decades and decades. Some rose, some fell, but the city went on living.

Until the war...

Don't worry Stormbringer! Florida will come to Carthage's rescue! (in a thousand years or so)

If I pull this off this will be one of the greatest comebacks in NESing history. Brace yourselves.
