The tide of Quebecois barbarians seemed to be nearly endless Eliah of Hilland. His legion, which had been guarding the North River for several months, had awoken early that morning to find the barbarians swarming over the banks out of the fog and quickly overrunning the camp. Many had fallen in that brutal rising, and the survivors, Eliah among them, had run south. One of the Guard Captains had rallied the fleeing forces as best he could in a nearby glen and had turned to face the oncoming horde. The Quebecois had fallen upon them like a tidal wave, screaming as though they were possessed. It had taken the full strength of the legion to simply keep from falling over against the crush of the enemy warriors, let alone fight back. The Massachusetts warriors kept their shields up while the invaders flailed at them with clubs, axes and the occasional sword. Eliah felt the hot, stinking breath of one of the Quebecois on his face, as the barbarian attempted to cleave him with a large stone axe. He struck back by stabbing the attacker in the gut and was rewarded with a howl and an easing of the pressure against his shield. The melee continued for what seemed like an eternity, with another barbarian appearing whenever one fell. When no more of the attackers appear from the tree line, the Massachusetts warriors turned and retreated in good order.

Over several hours, the remaining warriors slowly headed back towards the heartland of Massachusetts, turning and clashing with the barbarians for a few minutes, then retreating again. However, with each skirmish, their numbers dwindled lower and lower. Eventually, it was only the Guard Captain, Eliah and a dozen others. The remaining troops were all wounded in some manner, including a nasty cut on the arm for Eliah, and it was quite obvious that this battle would be their last. It was only by the grace of the Sky Father that he had survived this long, though it seemed doubtful he would live much longer. The Quebecois were only a short distance away, heading over a hillock that was separated from the current position of the Massachusetts warriors by a small valley with a stream running through it. Eliah had come to accept his impending doom, when he felt a hand on his shoulder. He turned to look at of the Guard Captain, half of whose face was covered by a large bandage to slow the bleeding of a vicious sword stroke. “Eliah” the Captain said in a raspy voice “I need you to do something for me.” Eliah bowed and said that he would do whatever the captain ordered. “You are young and still able to run, yes?” Eliah nodded. “Then I need you to take this.” The Captain held out a small scrap of paper. “This chronicles what has happened so far today. You must take it back to our lands, so that they will know we have been invaded.” Eliah stared at the note, not wanting to accept what it meant. “But..but Captain..” He was cut off with a harsh glance. “They must know Eliah, and you are the only one able to take the message back. It MUST be done. We will try to buy you as much time as we can.” Bowing his head, Eliah accepted the note, tucked it into his pouch, dropped his shield and began running South. As tired as he was, he knew that his people depended on him to warn him of the looming threat. The sound of battle echoed behind him, but he continued onwards. His training told him he belonged with his fellow soldiers, killing the invaders, while his head told him to flee from the certain death that lay behind him.

A patrol found the soldier, unconscious and near death, a few days later. The note he bore was quickly sent by messenger to Boston, where the largest army in the history of the nation was raised to deal with the Quebecois.

So it was that the 3rd Legion died and the Northern War began. The Obelisk in Boston stands as a mute testimony to sacrifice of those 10,000 soldiers who died in order to halt the advance of the seemingly unending Quebecois warriors.

The Imperial Ideal
Over the period of united Jasiran, the idea of a Westphalian independent nation-state did not exist. Even the idea of a "state", in the sense of a soverign independent entity, would not have existed. By 2300 BC, a rather different system had evolved.

The most powerful entity was theoretically Parliament, which by now, although acknowleged powerless in practice, was admired as an institution (at least in the north), and, although cultural practice dictated that they rarely announce anything publically, when they (rarely) did it was met with widespread acceptance for the common people.

Below it was the President, who was acknowledged by all to be in practice the ruler. His powers were, however, actually limited by lower bodies- and even Parliament could put him down if he tried to make a break or innovation in formal procedure. He also had to beware of several claimants to the throne around the state.

Next were in theory the Governors. The Governor formally ruled on behalf of Parliament and reported to the President ("acting on Parliament's behalf"). In practice, whilst they could pass laws in some areas there were three types of local entities that were more powerful then they. (Although usually an individual Governor would only have to deal with one)

First was the Landholder. Typically awarded land during the conquest period or for supressing a revolt, his ideological posistion was that the President (a contradiction to formal theory) had no right to his land, and used control of the local militia corps (a political class all their own) to bully the Governor into favourable decisions.

Second was the Warlord. Similar to the Landlord, the primary difference was that they had no actual legitimacy in the area (if there was a formal landlord, either it was the President or they had no real power. Often these developed in the wake of absentee landlords). These were usually willing to use more underhanded methods, and as a matter of course had their own bandit corps formally independent of them.

Third was the Tribal Chief. These were spineless on their own, but could command popular support. Large-scale Coalitions would be formed amongst Chiefs, who would threaten rebellion if a President or Governor did not accept the continuation of their rule. They usually would not win, but Governors did not want to get into trouble- and a President could wonder if it was worth the risk. (Precedent had shown that informal chiefs usually had significant de facto power even in the wake of a supressed revolt)

The area later considered Jasiran by outsiders was seen at this time not as an independent state or nation, but as the parts of the President and Parliament's rightful domain (which consisted of the world) which actually submitted. There was no seperate word for foriegners other then "rebel", and those foriegners who entered the territory without formally acknowledging Jasiran supremacy not merely over the area but over themselves and their homeland were executed.

I've got a couple of questions, Crezth:
1: The "lessens chance of culture flip" of my Temple of Gaia means that the other nations would have a harder time to culture flip me, no?

3: How exactly does the culture flip work?

Children of the River

The Amazonians, in an attempt to gain strength in the river basin, not only absorbed some tribes, but managed to increase the activity of nearly every tribe in the river basin. This was not a bad thing in the eyes of the Amazonians, for now they had peoples in which to trade with. You see, the inland tribes did not have access to the sea, and the bounty it provided. Maybe in the future, the tribes would join the Amazonians, creating a strong state, in full control of the river basin...but until that time, good relations will stem and trade will make Amazonia prosperous.

From: Amazonia
To: The Inland Amazon Tribes

Greetings brothers and sisters, fellow children of the river. We the Amazonians are pleased to see so much activity in the great river basin, and hope this activity remains for centuries. We would like to extend an offer of good faith to you, from brother to brother, of trade and friendship. We would be willing to trade goods obtained from our sea territory in exchange for goods only found deeper in the jungles. Also, an alliance between us will solidify the region from unwanted influences, and help us both prosper. Do you agree to this?

The Cadredec Dynasty- Part 2- The Reign of Shalmasere II (Traditions Born)

i- Early Affairs:
Once in "power", Shalmasere began to fancy (although he still had a somewhat grip on politicial realities) that he was the true and rightful ruler of Jasiran. In this he was rivalled by two major nomadic claimants- an empire of the former Jasiran tribe in the east, and a loose confederation of tribes in the west.

Allowing his two foes to battle each other, he decided to gain the moral high ground by acting as ruler and providing peace to the area he actually controlled (never mind his earlier warfare). His first priority was the Jaderite pirates.

The Jaderite town-state was further to his east, outside of his control. It's primary advantage was it's income from piracy (including on Jasiran) and alliance with East Jasiran (though at this point it's ally was engaged in all-out war). Additionally, it had fortifications formidable enough to ensure an assault would cause significant casualties.

To counter this, Shalmasere treated them like common criminals. Using political pull to force Parliament to back him up, he created a Declaration to this effect, conficsating fisherman's boats "for the supression of the criminals". Ignoring the East Jasiran political issue (appearing to take the moral high ground, although this was actually a moot point for now), he besieged the town of Jaderia to cut off land food sources- forcing the pirates to rely purely on such means for survival.

Next, he exploited his confiscated fishing fleet (although the legal fiction was that it was temporary) to attack the pirates in a series of small ship-to-ship battles. He actually lost more then he won, but superior resources eventually won out. Those pirates who were captured were taken to the newly renamed capital of Shalmasere and executed for murder.

This was not, however, entirely to his advantage. The Governor of Bradios began a rebellion on the basis that Parliament was "poorly advised" and that whilst it, as rightful ruler of Jasiran (the idea was disliked as an innovation at this point, but formally it was), should have power, the President should be deposed.

Shalmasere liked the Governor personally, and created a new precedent by treating him not as a criminal but as a rebel (in practice this meant much the same thing in the way of war and execution, but rebels had formal status almost as high as foriegn enemies). But this would come back to haunt him, as he failed to exploit his moral advantage.

Things were beginning to get bad. What passed for political analysts began to act under the assumption that the winner of the East-West Jasiran war would conquer him and the war would be over with...

Story about Tartessos:
22nd February, Year 578 of the Kingdom
Island of Corcega

Nita looked around from her position in the surroundings of her farm in the Tartesian island of Corcega. It had been some very hard and interesting five years, ever since his husband and her had been offered lands in the newest domain of the Kingdom to live and prosper. After a few hours of deliberations, they had accepted, and had immediately set out to the island.

During the first five months, they had had to build their own home, with the help of the other people they had travelled with, setting in the new town of Nueva Malaca, and starting the task of ploughing the virgin land and sow it with wheat seeds they had been given by the governance of the Balear Archipelago, from where they came.

The first harvest had been celebrated in all of Nueva Malaca (numbering a score of scores and rising), as it was the first pregnancy of the colony, which was Nita's. Her husband Leon had been very happy with it, and nine months later Nita gave birth to a healthy baby girl they named Carma.

They had been living in peace, without a problem, but the war against the Carthaginian enemy was still on, although a lull in the combats had been in place ever since the Tartessian Army had taken the whole of the mainland, leaving them only with Sardinia, an island placed just south of Corcega itself.

Nita hoped that the war never arrived to her town, because in here was everything that she held dear: her town, her farm, her husband, her three-year-old girl and her new baby, Jason. All the things she had worked so hard to get where here in Nueva Malaca.

She prayed to Gaia that the enemies of Tartessos never arrived to Corcega.

Extract from "The Evolution of the Kingdom" by Alfonso Perion

... the introducing of the use of metal supposed a great impulse for Tartessos. The first metal ever to be used was copper around the year 540 (according to several ritual instruments found in the tombs of some kings), but hardly ten years later (which was a surprise for the archaeologists, as it seems that Tartessos was the nation who did the fastest transition from copper to bronze) new instruments made of the alloy of copper and tin were being made, as well as weapons that gave the soldiers of Tartessos an edge against the regional powers of Europe.

The use of bronze was also determinant in the construction of the Temple of Gaia (which even nowadays keeps attracting many tourists from the whole world), as the new tools used by the builders and quarry workers were of a better quality when compared to the stone tools used before. This allowed the builders of the temple to extract stones and blocks of marble of a better quality than those obtained before.

But there were several determinant factors apart from the use of bronze that made Tartessos a powerhouse in the Western Mediterranean at the time: its powerful and attractive culture, based on many myths and legends and expanded to include written stories (the art of writing and reading were taught to every person in the country in special 'word-houses' or schools for free) which always brought many people to it; the diversification of the economy, based in trade but also including many important sectors like agriculture, fishing or mining, which prevented it from being affected by any economical crisis in those times; and their fast rate of expansion into new territories, that, while it wasn't as big as that of nations like Florida or Russia, it was very effective as the natives joined the Kingdom without any problem.

However, Tartessos would soon find new enemies as they eliminated the old ones...

Battle of Kingston

medio_01.jpg

Partisans raining arrows upon the confused Viking ranks, causing them to charge without formation. Militia divisions with Slicer Spears stand by while the National Army to the left of them, armed with swords, are ready to iniciate a counter charge.

The Battle of Kingston, outside of London, was a turning point of the Brittanian theater. This is the first defeat of the Vikings and the First victory of the Partisans, trained archers armed with the Partisan Hand ax and masters of survival.

The Battle first started when a Partisan Unit rained arrows upon the retreating Vikings from a ridge. Now called Gurdy Hill, the Vikings charged, forcing the Partisans to retreat while calling for support. Within hours 25,000 Vikings faced about 14,000 Miltiamen, 9,000 Partisans and 9,000 men National Army. They had burned the trees on the ridge and forced them to station on the lower ridge now known as Harvaldson Ridge. The other 4 thousand Vikings are holding London Proper facing 4 thousand Militiamen and a thousand Partisan/National Army units.

With 25k Vikings against 32k Associated Union troops and holding the upper ground, they might have won this close contest. However, the tide was turned by the Trifia Arrows of the Partisans.

Raining down on the Vikings of up to 15 arrows a minute per archer. Over 3 thousand of them were killed as they tried to regroup. We don't know which viking's oath started it, but suddenly the remainder charged, down the hill they ran, arrows flying behind them for a few moments until they start hitting again. Up the hill they went, unleashing their own weaker arrows just before the two lines hit.

The Militia lines groaned as the vikings chopped their way through, they want their revenge. That is when the Partisans countercharged. In the close battle, their hand axes are more useful than the Great Ax of the Viking; more useful than the Raiding Spear of the Dani. Slicing through a few ranks they gave the National Army room to flank the large Viking army. Marching back a few steps they resumed unleasing arrows of death into the front lines.

The Vikings, with most of their experianced leaders killed on the front and their officers on the flanks, broke for a second. The Union Commander order a unconditional charge as hundreds of hundreds of Union Troops broke into them. Broken, they use their strengh to run.

This victory places the Viking Command at london in great risk, they retreated to the hills outside and for now, are trying to replace their numbers as their supply dwindles.

With Nippon acquiescing to the Emperor after a quick naval campaign the Empire turned all efforts to settlement. There was plenty of land to be taken and settled for the good of Wu. It was also time to send an emissary to Koryo to reaffirm the friendship between them and the Wu Empire. He would send a son to be married. The second son, Sun Yu, would be a wonderful choice. He loved to travel and explore and needed a wife. Emperor Sun Pa I turned and motioned for a runner, he knelt awaiting directions. "Go and fetch Prince Yu and bring him to me. I will be in the throne room checking over some maps." The runner took off down the hall.

Sun Yu entered the throne room head bowed respectfully until his father told him to come forward. "Yes father what do you wish of me?"

"I want you to go to Koryo and establish a treaty of peace and trade between us. While you are there try and find a royal, or at least high nobility woman to take as a wife." The Emperor responded. He smiled at his son. "You need to begin a family my son."

"It shall be done as you wish." Sun Yu bowed and backed out of the room as the Emperor went back to the maps.

The Rise of Elvisanity

Oddly enough, while the American world bounded into the Bronze Age, there would be one invention which would stand out and have an enormous impact upon the world as a whole. The creation of the world’s first guitars would spark the dawn of monotheistic religion in the Floridian Empire.

The first guitar is believed to have been invented in approximately 1450 F.Y. The first use of this instrument seems to have been for ceremonial religious services by the priests of Tampa but it was eventually discarded. Ultimately they came to be used more by bards and private individuals employed by the Ducs and Kings of Florida. Eventually as the spread of the device became more prolific, private individuals began making considerable funds playing even for the lower classes.

Upon the larger estates in the islands or even in the Floridian heartland, workers of the land would often be forced to pay rent to the various lord of the region upon who possessed the land on which they lived. In order to amass the rent, these people would hire bards and other musicians to play in their homes and charge admission for others to listen. Those most skilled ultimately became well renown around the empire, but none would surpass the oratory and musical skill of Elvis Presley, a person who appeared in the southern most island possessions of Florida in about 1500 F.Y.

Contemporaries of Presley have written many theories on the appearance of the Bard, which has remained shrouded in mystery. Most of these accounts take on a mystic flavor, declaring that he had descended from the heavens to preach his good word, but recent accounts say he likely arrived from the northernmost of the Amazonian tribes. He managed to achieve musical success on the farms of Trinad, eventually becoming known throughout the Outer Rim.

Ultimately when his success was known, even the King of Orlando called him to the Floridian peninsula for a private performance. He became known throughout the entirety of the empire, and people would come for hundreds of miles to listen to his words and music. To all he seemed the voice of the common Floridian, and many were touched by his words. His music became known as “The Music of Rock,” representing its power over the people and the stabilizing mood it would bring about.

Despite his successes across the lands, even as far away as Chicago and Massachusetts, the tables would soon turn. The priests of Tampa, threatened by the preaching of Elvis, determined to bring about his downfall. After a performance in Mexicali, he was betrayed by one of his closest followers, and under judgment of the Duc of Mexico he would be executing by hanging. The Music of Rock seemed to have at last died out.

Over the next fifty years, the word of Elvis spread and many Elvisian priests began to make an appearance, particularly in the southern and western parts of the Floridian Empire. Most of these priests would take on the distinct appearance of Elvis in order to be recognized as one of his preachers. By 1600 F.Y. Elvisanity, while on the rise, was still a very disorganized religion.
