Well, it sort of depends... the separation at first was more of the administrative kind, then slowly changed into one of two different polities. If we accept 395 as the start of Byzantium, then the split itself was "peaceful" enough, though the two polities almost immediately started a territorial dispute.

I suggest starting with convertSurroundingCities().
Thanks.

I didn't know Latin was spoken in the Byzantine Empire.

Latin was spoken initially, but the empire-wide language slowly shifted to Greek and by 600, it was mostly Greek everywhere except for in the more official areas of Constantinople and as battle commands (ironically, the soldiers barely knew what they meant, and the commands became mangled by the later centuries)

Okay, up until this I thought you were arguing like this because you know too much about the Byzantine Empire, but now I'm asking myself whether you know enough about the relations between the west and east.

I'm not denying that they went downhill and soured relatively quickly, but during the initial years- the time when the mechanical flip would've happened - the division was merely viewed as an administrative split. But later on, relations were not good. I even recall reading that the Byzantines bribed many barbarian tribes to go westward, and by extension, attack the Western half.

No, there is still an artificial division into Africa, Europe, (the rest of) Asia, North America and South America, respectively. Since these subcontinents have more than 30 tiles, they are still recognized.

So no Australia?
(Or Oceania, as the continent is called)

Australia of course too, but there are no subdivisions. All Pacific islands are their own continent for the game, but the colony mechanic will likely consider them part of Australia (potentially Asia).

Basically, but don't expect their borders to conform to the traditional geographical boundaries. For instance, "Europe" includes northern Africa and the Middle East, so "Asia" is more like south and east Asia, and "Africa" is sub-Saharan Africa.

Speaking of continents, Russia straddles both Europe and Asia, which means that until Astronomy, it can't train settlers in a lot of its empire.

Well, it's appropriate that they settle Siberia from western Russia, so I'd say that's WAD.

Yeah, turn off cheat mode :mischief: (i.e. remove the chipotle cheat code from the config file.)

They'll be completely removed with release of course.

Speaking of which, is there an ETA on when the next packaged version will be released? I know you've got tons of stuff to do, but just wondering about a general time frame.

It's less of a time frame than a list of remaining stuff I want to include. Let's paraphrase my current to do list:

- play Maya to make their UHV more interesting and Holkans more useful
- play China to balance their barbarian pressure
- play Mughals to see how hard their UHV is now
- change the Turkish UHV
- rewrite the Congress mechanics for performance and transparency
- finish rewriting the AP mechanics
- go over and improve some of the URVs
- fix the city overflow bug
- balance the English tech speed
- balance the late game stability
- balance the large empire modifier

Evidently they won't be in the next release.

If there are anybody here that also celebrate Chinese New Year, I would like to say Happy New Year! May we all granted prosperity in this year of the Wood Horse ^^

I don't think prosperity is what awaits you this year...

Yeah, I'm not going to lie. I'm incredibly relieved Chinese New Year's is here because I needed to get some new art supplies soon (all my charcoal sticks are stubs).
Happy New Years to you too, Ben!
