Diet mostly is what I've read.

That 183.3 cm on the chart actually seems little compared to what I remember from the Netherlands. I guess older people are shorter and drag the average down? I'm about 183 cm tall myself and felt pretty short over there, near other people my age.

Apparently a century or two ago the Dutch were renowned for their short height. How times change.

There's an old story that the Emperor of Germany once told the Queen of the Netherlands that all his soldiers were six foot tall, and she replied that if they burst the dykes, the waters were seven feet deep. I guess what she didn't let on is the secret program to breed eight foot, flood-proof Dutchmen.

The Dinaric Alps are not a country, though. If we are to go by subdivisions might as well say that the Miami Heats locker room has the tallest people in the world.

Nutrition is important but genes too - so even a perfectly nourished Mbuti Pygmy isn't going to have 180 cm. Nutrition is very important, but if two groups both get perfect nutrition, then any height differences that remain are mostly genetic.

================================

Edit:

I found info that this data for the Dinaric Alps is from southern Croatia and Herzegovina.

Clearly genes matter, but are not the dominant factor here. See the Americans being the tallest people in the world for 200 years, only to be substantially superceded by several nationalities. Also, shorter nationalities such as the Japanese are quickly closing the gap. And of course people of the same nationality like North and South Koreans have vastly different heights, as the North is a starving communist hellhole.

Domen, you are dividing by language, not by ethnic/genetic groups.

Americans were the tallest people until the 1950s because:

1) the USA was the most prosperous country in the world until the 1950s
2) they received a lot of immigration from listed above "tall countries" in Europe

So while having much better nutrition than most of Europe, they had similar genes.

Take for example Norway - it was a poor country during the 1800s and early 1900s.

Dividing by genetic groups is impossible if this data is for entire countries.

I presume that 176 cm for Russia (in year 1992) is less than average for ethnic Russians.

Some of Non-Russian minorities, especially those in Asian part of Russia, are not famous for being tall.

Wikipedia also has no data for Ukraine and Belarus. Belarus is probably rich enough to have good nutrition, Ukraine is poorer.

North and South Koreans have vastly different heights, as the North is a starving communist hellhole.

North Koreans are genetically practically the same as South Koreans, so in this case nutrition is responsible, yes.

I met that Dutch guy once, think he's gay.

I stand at mighty 193cm!

See the Americans being the tallest people in the world for 200 years

Children of 19th century peasants from Lesser Poland born in Texas after 1850 were 4 cm - 5 cm taller than their parents.

And Norwegians before 1950 were short mostly because of poverty and poor nutrition, rather than genes:

Average height in Norway (I suppose it only refers to male height):

9th - 11th c. - 173 cm
12th - 14th c. - 171 cm
17th - 18th c. - 167 cm
2nd half of 19th c. - 170 cm
Around year 1930 - 172 cm

As you can see Early Modern Norwegians in the 1600s - 1800s were much shorter than Medieval Norwegians in the 800s - 1000s.

Aryan master race will prevail again after Germany recovers from the crisis and kicks all non-Germans away.

This is the prime intellect of our generation, gentlemen. It is never too late to acknowledge our intellectual inferiority to this colossus of reason.
