D'Artagnan01: Low-level Training Day

But to capture our islands they'd have to have ships. But then WE would have ships too. :mischief: After all, once all the islands are conquered, wouldn't it seem suspicious if that galley/caravel approached our lands? :hmm: We'd be able to defend/take out those ships easily. Or even trash them with artillery. (Whenever they get hurt, they run to port)

Or we could just be safe and use privateers. Just to be sure. ;)

We might want to settle the pony just so no one else can get it.

Other than that, this would be a good spot for a bunch of geeks, if we could defend it properly. Wouldn't want two swords to capture four or five cities, even though that has only a remote-to-none chance of happening.

since the Iroquis and English are on our continent, they would have minor interest in the island. But if we settle the horses one, why dont we settle the one with game, sugar, and fish too? its very resourceful.:food:

I like the idea of privateers, but I think our teacher will disagree.

While Geek Island would be fun, it would shift our focus away from building up our core and getting to the stars. It seems to me that Bede thinks we can win with little to no further tile expansion. That is, we have everything we need to win inside the current borders of France. We may need to bump some others out of the way, but by and large our borders will stay the same for some time to come.

Now having said all that, I haven't a clue as to what our next steps should be once we stablize in Republic.

I don't quite understand yet the relationship between courthouses and markets, so I'm not sure what is the next best build or how to determine it. I have a vague idea, but don't really grasp the concept.

Food, Gold and Shields I can follow. I can't translate that yet into a build sequence.

Well, it would be nice if we could get rid of the swamp south of Cherbourg.
Swamp usually has plenty of BG's under that nasty stuff.:)

Also, something tells me that the Iroquis swordsman(SW of Oka) is looking for trouble...better keep an eye on it just in case.:scan:

We are getting pretty close to filling the land we have to work with on our end of the continent. I'll try to gen up a map tonight.

I hesitate to commit resources to the other islands as the lack of fresh water is a huge drawback. But making use of the fish and wheat on the island to the east and the fishing towns on the west isle are definitely worth considering. As I said earlier the islands are useful for providing unit support for the army and the towns with fish and wheat might make decent tax farms.

What needs to happen now is to fill in the penisula, and start driving population and production in the core.

I will put a courthouse anywhere it recovers at least 2gpt at full development of the town. So you have to look ahead at the sustainable population and work back from there if you want to formalize it. In practice it means almost anywhere outside the first ring of towns is a logical spot.

Markets are a good choice anywhere you have 10 or more net commerce after corruption and budget allocations (slider settings) for science and entertainment. The marketplace multiplier only works on "free" commerce, not total commerce. And the effectiveness of the markteplace diminishes the less free commerce is available.

The happiness impact of marketplaces is a separate issue. And that effect only becomes really noticeable when you have three or more luxuries available. And since we may be able to buy ivory from Elizabeth once somebody builds the SoZ then we have a third luxury and markets will have a more than marginal happy effect.

As a general rule if you don't know what to build in a town, build a seige engine or artillery piece or a boat if you can.

Off to dot map the neck....

As promised.

And yes I crammed them in there and moved CB's spots back a couple of spaces.

I still don't quite understand Tribute's preference for the spot north of the rubble of Poitiers, so I placed a town on the rubble. Then filled out to the coasts on either side to the north.

I await the finish of CB's turns with great anticipation, or rather the end of the Anarchy and the completion of the Forbidden Palace. Those two events will have a major impact on the overall picture as regards corruption (less so with waste outside the core). It is almost bootless speculation to make any concrete plans until those two things happen.

I plotted out the most efficient way to water these cities, based on your dotmap.

Water Map of North France 50 BC
50BC_CherbourgWaterMap.jpg

W1 is the first to be watered, then W2 and so on.

For this to work, the 2 Light Blue Dots need to be cities before the others, so that we can irrigate through the cities. The 2 Red Dots are where I was planning to build and beef up our borders.

It seems that building the Light Blues before the Reds is better than the Reds before the Light Blues. Right?

You are correct on the irrigation plan, and settling the two blues would help speed the process some, but my strategic bump tells me to build the red border towns first. And since the settlers are already committed north I would go ahead and build Red, then settle Blue.

Something I learned from Sirian is that when running an irrigation chain, irrigate and move, irrigate and move. Come back and do any needed roads later. Gang together as many workers as needed to irrigate a grassland in one turn and then just boogie along until you are done.

I really need a look at the save after the anarchy ends and the FP is built.

I like the new city 1 on the dotmap. the AI wont hesitate to CxxC from a city of another civ. Also it has wines, and a whale(:D) . So yea, lets get that spot.:p

What is it with you guys and whales?

If I had a ha'penny for every shield spent on cultural buildings to get whales within the borders of hopelessly corrupt little villes....I'd be Captain Ahab.

[IBT]

Save game and post turn log.
Hit Enter.
Order restored.
Several cities lose population, did something wrong somewhere.

06 0030 BC

rArcher arrives in Amiens.
8TurnSettler changes his plan and moves S.
6TurnSettler changes his plans also and moves E.
Both will create new cities in 2 turns.
WorkerC SW.
EastwardHoGalley goes eastward.
WorkerB and D begin a road in a forest.
WarriorYellow loads into WestwardHoGalley.
WestwardHoGalley moves NE into the westernmost coastal tile and stops.
Our eArcher moves toward Cherbourg.
Send WarrriorDude to keep the fog away from our irrigating workers. From Cherbourg, SE, S and S.
Fire some geeks. Construction in 14.
[IBT]
Cities riot.

The New World 30 AD
30AD_NewWorld.jpg

Trading and Science

England will trade 11 gpt and 126 gold (all) for Literature.
England will trade 15 gpt and 126 gold (all) for Currency.
The Iroquois are broke, 6 gold.
Egypt is flat broke, 0 gold.
Egypt will sell Construction for 59 gold.
The Vikings are broke, 9 gold.
They will sell Construction for 61 gold.

CivAssistII Technology Tab 30 AD
30AD_CivAssist_TechTab.jpg

We need 63 beakers to learn Construction and we can buy it for 59 gold.

If this is the last turn of anarchy (30 AD) we will learn Construction next turn, as I understand things. From CivAssistII, if we switch to Republic now, we get 55 beakers toward science. We have 11 geeks, so it would look like at a minimum we would have 66 beakers toward the 63, for an overrun of 3.

If next turn (50 AD) is the last turn of anarchy, well, we still learn Construction that turn or as we gain Republic.

My first thought was to buy Construction. I don’t think that is wise for two reasons. One, we will soon learn it anyway, so no desperate, gotta-have-it-now need for it. Two, when we switch to a Republic, we will have to deal with unit upkeep. Spending half of our money to buy a tech we will soon learn does not seem smart.

And since we have unit upkeep, I think we do need to trade with England to get her gold and gold per turn. This will double our gold. I would favor trading Literature now and Currency later, but I don’t know if that is best.

Our unit upkeep will be a bit higher than what I first thought since we have military units establishing our borders. Those we need to keep in place until we backfill the Neck of France, and then disband them. As of now, our unit upkeep will be 58 per turn and we will net a -31 gpt, again from CAII.

We have a lot of units in Cherbourg. My plan was to disband them to help make a worker. Amiens still needs to be abandoned. The archer I wanted to load into EastwardHoGalley can be loaded next turn.

I would like our next tech to be Engineering, so we don’t waste time crossing rivers, but the next tech may have already been discussed.

I'm so sorry! It's true I tell you.
I'm such a bad emperor player. I still use as best an OCP as possible that I can get and try to waste 0 tiles and 0 bonuses with maximum rivers and lake towns.

It's so sad. And I can't do anything about it too! Unless it's someone else's game. In that case, I have to put my inhibitions on.

And by the way, CommandoBob, I thought your turnset was done. Turns out you had only played 5 turns. This explains why your anarchy log seemed so short (until this post). And, you found them. You found them! It turns out they're backwards. So maybe, just maybe, there are not 2 continents but 3.

I completely agree on the Construction thing. Unless I don't know how coming out of anarchy into a government works. BTW, don't misclick Despotism when the gov't choice comes up. I've actually done that once. Then I reloaded....

But selling Literature? And only to 1 civ? It does seem like a waste of money but all that gold is quite tasty, indeed. If we trade that, we might as well give it to the Scandinavians in a while. It will increase the science rate after a few (about 10 or so) turns.

On the other hand, you could just trade construction and all of Dizzy Lizzie's gold for Currency. Then she'd be forced by the RNG to study feudalism and help us advance even farther.

And another point, there are other civs around just waiting to be found. First if we can find them, then this trading thing may be even more beneficial to our Republic.

Thats some nice RNG luck you got there , Commando. :)

So...we are in tech parity with everyone you say? Or are we backwards?

Sorta in the middle, I think.
Everyone has Monarchy. ()
Egypt and Vikings have Construction; England and Iroquois do not.
We have Currency and Literature; England and Iroquois do not.

Egypt is currently in anarchy, everyone else is in Republic.

I did not establish embassies with our Cleo or Ragnar.

Ahead: Egypt and Scandanavia (Construction)
Middle: France
Behind: England and Iroquois (Construction, Currency and Literature)
