Indeed! Quite often (but not always), the modder is a RL programmer. Having a background in programming sure motivates someone to mod.

Hey, so i recently got a new laptop with windows 8. I had played RFC Dawn of civilization before on my old windows xp computer, however when i try to run the game on my windows 8 computer the mouse shows that something is loading but after a few seconds nothing happens and nothing ends up loading. Is this an issue i can fix please help. I really want to play the game

I have no experience with Windows 8, but I'd take a look into the task manager. Is there still a process called "Civ4BeyondSword.exe"? If so, the game is still loading and you might just have to wait a bit longer. Increasing the priority of the process might help.

I did that the program shows its running for maybe 5 seconds max and then it disappears into the ether, never to be seen again. Do have any suggestions?

Other mods work without problems?

OK, help me, I'm dumb.

I wanted to create a shortcut to the mod because as the OP says loading this mod is a PITA. I put scenario shortcuts on the desktop and told Windows to open it with the Beyond the Sword executable, but that just launches BTS. What am I doing wrong?

You should shortcut to the WorldBuilder scenario maps instead:

e.g.

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword\Mods\RFC Dawn of Civilization\PublicMaps\RFC 3000 BC.CivBeyondSwordWBSave"

I did so, and Windows promptly nagged me that it cannot open the file, so I made it open it with the BTS executable, to no avail.

I didn't get that from Windows 7. I just navigated to that folder, selected "Send to Desktop" and have been using it ever since. It automatically selected BTS executable for me within the shortcut.

Afraid I'm out of ideas if that doesn't happen for you, sorry.

Can't say anything about how Steam changes things.

If you are using Steam, the filepath should be:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization IV\Beyond the Sword\Mods\RFC Dawn of Civilization\PublicMaps\RFC 3000 BC.CivBeyondSwordWBSave

See if that works and report back to the thread.

If you want to load DoC directly, the only way I've found to do so otherwise is to load up a save.
That's really the only way to do it AFAIK.

It may be useful to keep a 3000BC Egypt/Babylon/China start lying around on your Desktop,
and promptly entering and returning to Main Menu if you want the fastest possible way to load the game directly from Desktop.

Eureka! I've found my problem. At least, I think so.

"Sid Meier's Civilization IV" doesn't exist. (!?) Who needs base game files anyway, right?

Anyways, I was navigating to Sid Meier's Civilization IV Beyond the Sword.

Wait, what? At least some of the game text is exclusively contained in the base game.
