Deity Walkthrough - Native America

Great game, enjoyed reading it very much. I'm not even near to deity or immortal but anyhow I was able to learn a few new tricks.

Those wars must've been the fastest I've yet seen. I'm surprised to see this kind of zerg-method to work with high cultural defence. I guess I'll try something similar - with spies bringing down at least some of the bonuses :)

Too bad we didn't see an overseas war. They're fun to read but boring to play.

If you have stables you'll have 2 promotions for your cavalry/cuirassiers right off the bat. If you look at the defenders you can choose what to aim for (C2, C1+pinch or C1+the pike one). C2 Cavalry have great odds vs longbowmen even without bombarding cultural defense. I can't remember the specifics, but 70% and more is not uncommon (and there's also the possibility of retreating).

If you use cuirassiers spies might be necessary. This is one of the reasons as to why I've been using cavalry more in 3.17 rather than cuirassiers as they increased the cost of the espionage mission removing cultural defense. In the end it depends on the terrain, what technology/units the AI has and whether you have the opportunity to get enough EP points.

Really impressive game, a great read once again. You're the :king: , indeed.

Who's up next? :D

Nobody. I read the next two BOTMs are on immortal and deity difficulty so I think I'll focus my time on those instead. The next SGOTM will be BTS too I believe so I'll be doing that too I guess.

At least I'd have to know whether the HoF-mod will be 3.17 compatible before starting another game as I CBA to do a dual install. I'll most likely lay low for some time as 2 games are enough for now. There are still stones unturned (or however the saying goes) regarding gameplay so I might do something in the future to go into that, but not the next couple of months I think.

Most impressive, beating Deity with just a single trait. The UB and UU never had a chance to shine, and Protective didn't kick in before the war with Darius, but by then you had already won anyway.

Well played!

Man. I usually hit a spy bottleneck. Guess next time I'll put those hammers into additional Calvalry...while my diety opponents still have Macemen somehow.

Rusten-

I missed a few things that maybe you could clear up for me - if you already mentioned them, sorry, I didn't see it. I'm a bit foggy on your overall tech path. I see after priesthood you took the Oracle and took MC for trade bait at which point you started on writing but,

when did you research pottery?
what trades did you get for MC?
did you research monarchy yourself or trade for it?
what trade choices and tech path allowed you to start researching col.

I noticed you got the Oracle very very late. I'm predominantly an Immortal player and on average I'd say the Oracle goes around 1500 BC and usually quicker on Deity. So my question here would be, on the average Deity game you will be no where close to grabbing the Oracle at such an extravagantly late date - so how would you progress with your game with an inability to successfully trade? I suppose you could always go up the asthetics line but that would take quite a bit more time since you didn't beeline for it and your trade would be less favorable?

When I play Deity I usually find myself beelining up Asthetics, Literature, and Drama because I find they normally gain me MC (often), Construction (often), Mathematics, IW, COL, Alphabet, Masonry in the BC's and then allows me to bulb Philosophy for more trade bait.

And I'm not trying to come across brash, after all, I have seen Obsolete post games on Deity where he took the Pyramids in 450 BC - I'm just trying to say from my experience they are not the norm. So what do you do then?

Also, Rusten, here is a quote you give in another thread:

The only exception would be a run for the Oracle, but the deity AIs are incredibly fast at getting that wonder, it can go as early as turn 35 if Huayna and Pacal are in the game. As this seems to be a pretty good capital I doubt I'll chose a risky gambit such as the Oracle as that will slow down my expansion

Anyways, your thoughts and ideas would be great.

I loved that you had, by the end, Assembly Line but no Hunting...

Crusher1: Most of your points were answered during the game report. It's a pain to remember a game that's more than 6 months old, but I can try.

Regarding my quote: I'm guessing it's taken from the Aztec thread? The main difference is between going for an all-out Oracle strategy from the beginning (which that is referring too) and what I did in this game -- leaving the option open. I wasn't really expecting/certain to get it which I believe I pointed out in the report. The back-up plan would be to research CoL and trade for everything which would've been fine. Aesthetics isn't the only tech you can use--I find CoL to be just as good, if not better, in many games. CoL allows the philosophy lightbulb as well. I fully agree that the Oracle went really late -- don't revolve your strategy around getting it if you can't get it before 1800 BC (preferrably a lot sooner). This map also had much more room and no urgent city sites left, so I could spare the hammers. It was a lucky break, although the odds of success were higher than usual given the AIs I had met.

-there's a screenshot of me researching pottery there somewhere (2040 BC).
-I mentioned the MC trading in the report.
-monarchy was one of the MC trades.
-priesthood opens up CoL with writing.

So you would research COL directly after the failed attempt then to make sure you were able to maximize it for trade value, then research Monarchy for happiness if it was unavailable for trade? What I'm getting at is that from my experiences in Deity if you don't beeline to a good trading tech asap then it may be too late for you to ever catch up.

I was already headed there regardless of whether the Oracle would get built. Chances of all 3 civs having CoL is very small. Once one (1) AI discovers CoL the others will usually avoid it for quite some time. And even in the unlikely event that everyone has CoL by the time I'd get there there's philosophy. Monarchy is always available for trade--it's like alphabet in the way that the AI will part with it even if it has monopoly on it. If you know 3 civs CoL will usually net you at least alphabet and monarchy and then you can grab the rest with philosophy.

Geez, talk about bumping. Rusten, please make more of these. I know you've your hands full with SGs right now, but...
