Differences in moderation: Apolyton vs CFC.

In my experience, Apolyton threads mostly consists of snarky single line insults at the OP.

What? DinoDoc is not the only poster at Poly.

I see 72 here at CFC and 21 at Apoly right now...

105 total on the Poly Boards and 707 total on all the CFC boards

It varies from minute to minute but, yes, Apolyton's poster base seems to be mostly American (and so isn't up at 11:30 PST) while CFC's is more international. My estimate is that CFC has about 33%-50% more people on average so a debate about the quality of those extra posters seems valid. You're discussion has merits while the claim made by another poster, that Apolyton doesn't get any traffic, is clearly baseless.

Does anyone have anything to say about the differences in moderation styles between the two sites? I ask because that is, nominally, the topic of the thread.

Based on? Remember the previously posted graph only showed a 2-1 difference (or 50% of CFC's traffic for poly). Now, we can discuss average posts per user per visit that that still doesn't get you any where near your 600% figure.

Actually it shows CFC's traffic at roughly 10x that of Poly's

When did they re-format the site btw? It looks like it's more functional than the old, but I kinda liked the old one.

So go back to Apolyton?

Hey, Bill! Is this the supposedly more mature debate style we can expect from CFC? I wanted to discuss differences in moderation styles and get told "Go back to Apolyton!" I suspect, like most of your contentions, they exist only in your own mind and you're unable to back any of them up. The main difference between the two sites is CFC selectively enforces its rules while poly decides to treat everyone like big boys & girls and leaves them to work things out on their own. That certainly doesn't back up the wild claims you've been making in this thread or the other one though.

CFC is a larger site, moderators can't easily deal with so many posters on a personal level.

Now this I find to be completely factually correct.

The site switched to a new server and changed software about 7-8 months ago in preperation for Civ5's launch. Normally, there is a huge bump in traffic with the launch of a new civ game but since Civ5 has been a total dog...

Oh that's not biased at all.

It is, never the less, factually correct.

One aspect of this Oerdin is we want to be inviting to new people, and we don't want people to be rude to them. That's why it's discouraged to call someone an "idiot" even if they likely are reading their posts. Misunderstandings happen especially for newcomers.

One difference is that moderators here usually infract double posts. Such rule doesn't seem to exist on poly - i guess they allow it to make the forum seem more active.

He's not referring to accidental double posts, (which are generally never infracted and instead the post deleted) but consecutive double posts consisting of separate replies, such as if you have something to add to your previous post. It's much cleaner to just edit that post and add more.

Edit: Here's another example. CFC influenced Civ5 positively by adding GDR. Apolyton influenced Civ5 negatively by coming up with the major design flaw of hexagon tiles and one unit per tile (that I've seen floating around there since 1999) which broke the game.

I've found the moderating presence in the bit of the forums I frequent (Never Ending Stories) to be very light and eminently reasonable. I never NESed at Apolyton, so I don't think I could make a fair comparison. The only infractions I have are a few for an overlong signature, one for getting into a spammy discussion in early 2009, and one for swearing at an adbot in 2007. :p

Oh, I used to do that a lot but usually because I was responding to another post from someone else and I didn't know (still dont) how to edit in a response to a 2nd or 3rd or 4th person. Now I just type their name in and add their quote and my response, but it looks kinda sloppy that way.

@berz: I think you don't know what PDMA means.

Also can someone explain to me why one of the longest most active threads in Poly OT is a thread about CFC ? :lmao:

cuz someone just bumped it, somebody has been bumping old threads, some really old ones from 5-6 years ago

and no, pdma is not on my radar, but that aint related to what happened

I'm trying to drop that thread but kangaroo tail knows about it
