dl1 -- The Kings of Unfair

i agree that we shouldnt be 2nd in gnp, but that is mostly due to me temporarily firing the scientists and changing (forget the name of the city) from science to production for a round or two to hurry up the courthouse. I'd prefer to not whip it that heavily since it's supporting our research. that caused our GNP to drop sharply for a bit. other than that, once we get some mroe cottages up in the capital, we should be smoking the AI's. I think refocusing on the person we're going to be attacking, but what about double teaming boudica? she does have praets, but they're not a big match for shock axemen. I also didnt remember seeing her have a whole lot if i'm mistaken. what we could do is focus on her and send spies in to pillage her iron. by helping boudica ravage bismark, we're just helping make her stronger. just a thought.

Boudica's economy sucks right now and she's gearing for war. Her economy won't improve any in the near future so we can take her on with technologically superior troops.

I suggested whipping the courthouse in Utrecht because the city is working 3 mines and has one unhappy citizen. We can whip the courthouse out for those 4 and just set the tiles back to the cottages - it won't hurt our economy at all and that city will grow back quick.

well it was working the mines because i switched em so we could whip it for 3 instead of 4. it was working all the cottages +2 scientists before. doesnt really matter i guess. and the whole attacking boudica was just a thought. just trying to think of all the different paths we can go.

Well that tears it

Bismarck has planted a town on our gems, and sent one of his spearmen to Kushans to investigate.

Civ4ScreenShot0009.jpg

So I send a force in that direction, to see what happens and to burn the town down to remove the temptation. We may need to close our borders to him soon, if he keeps challenging us like this. The problem with that is that Boudicca is our only foreign trade route partner and closing those borders may cut those off.

Then I swap Maastricht to a monument which should be whippable in the next turn. I don't know if doing so earlier would have discouraged the German.

Boudicca has her hands full with Darius

and asked that we stop trading with him. As he offers us nothing of any value I agree and pick up some positive relationship points with her.

Our scout up in that vicinity has moved forward to watch the action, but very little has occurred and it looks like very little will.

I managed the Mathematics for Alphabet trade with Bismarck after only two turns invested in Alphabet.

The snoozing settler was sent to the deer camp location and I started another one in Utrecht after whipping in the courthouse and letting the town grow back to work all the cottaged fields. That settler was whipped on the last turn, citizens reassigned to cottages and the town set to train another sword. The settler should go to the north to lay down some claim on the sugar plantations.

The Hague was put to worker training until some more fields were developed. The one due on the interturn should head to the forests north of Amsterdam for some more soldier chops while the worker at Amsterdam can go south to the new town.

Currency is due in one to get the internal trade routes up and running more effectively. I chose that before Civil Service as CS was just too far off (~20 turns) and we will get there faster with more cottages at Amsterdam and in the hinterlands. Hunting can be picked up in one turn for the camp on the coast.

Newly trained soldiers from Amsterdam were sent to the southwest town to prepare for the German war. Espionage was allocated to favor Bismarck with a token amount assigned to Boudicca. We have enough points with her to look into her cities so I took a peek at Rome.

Interesting. Starving the town to get soldiers out more quickly. She did not seem to have an overwhelming force of anything when she attacked Darius, eight praetorians I think and most were doing garrison duty. She did finally move one praetorian onto a hill next to Darius' closest town but that has been the extent of it.

Now that we have Alphabet we can send some spies into Germany. That war comes soon, probably about the time the borders at Maastrict expand. I would not waste them on the 20% culture towns, but keep them in reserve for the core cities with more and stronger defenses. In the meantime they can run recon for the army.

The only tech of any value that Bismarck holds over us right now is Metal Casting so perhaps mission one for the spies should be an attempted steal of that tech. The other techs he holds we can learn ourselves for cheap.

I would tend to favor hammers over gold right now while we gear up the war machine.

maybe he'll chop the jungle for us and builds some mines just in time for them to flip to our culture. gotta think positive. it may be work it to whip some smaller things to get overflow into the library, but i'm not familiar enough with the math to say so. I think metal casting would be worth stealing. once we are ready to go to war, we can always focus our slider to EPs. this is actually where i'm agreeing more with you on building the yard. with just a couple of turns of focusing on 60-70% espionage, we should have enough points to do a couple of city revlots.

Lurker's Comment:

Veeeerrrry interesting. That's a move I wasn't aware the AI could do. Whipping yes, this? No.

I think Bede meant to say "working tiles where the total yields of food and production are both lower than is possible, including an unimproved and unforested grass hill, while starving, for no reason".

Personally, that's a move that I was in fact aware the AI could do. ;)

The tile assignment of Rome is very ********, working the forested plains hill instead of plains cow?

Another thing to note is that Boudica is running 20% espionage. I have a feeling all the AI's will try and match our passive espionage spending by using their sliders. If that happens it'll slow the tech pace down quite a lot on our continent.

I think teh AI is trying to minimize food. since it's at it's happy cap it doesnt need the extra food from the cows, however the extra hammer...

Here's the report...we're ready for war. More than actually.

Turn 121 - Currency comes in. Boudica calls Germany a worthless windbag.

Turn 122 - Hunting comes in. Rabbit Stew becomes popular.

126 - I exercise our sword arms and raze he barb city...and found Delft.

127 - I whip a Libiary in Maltracht. I'm not a fan of Monuments.

130 - Germany asks for Laws. I tell him he should follow this one - Might is Right.

132 - We get ANOTHER Great Spy. He gets settled too.

134 - After some micromanging, we get Metal Casting. Boudica asks for it, and I agree. She becomes pleased...so, I ask her for Archery, and she hands the thing over!

So yes, that's it. We've a horde of swords, and Germany no military. A spy is headed to blow thier copper out, but now is the time to press an attack!

I agree with you about libraries vs monuments. only time monuments are ever useful are pre-writing or if you're charismatic. looking forwad to to see what dl does :)

skip me. I have a giant midterm this week and a paper thats nearing a week late so i uninstalled civ . I'll still post, but probably wont play until at least after thursday

Preturn:
Looks like a good military, would have like more axes then sword but we will see how it goes
Stop the capital from starving

IBT:
Darius loses another city, he is not doing that well

Turn 1:

Turn 2:
Barbarians continue to be useful, they build a city on the "somewhere over here spot"
Declare
Raze the Gem stealer city, no loses, although the sword that took it will die
Calcutta.JPG

IBT
Random event gives India some axes near the city I razed

Turn 3:
Pataliputra is ours, no loses
Pataliputra.JPG

IBT:
Delhi gets a GP, if they build the a shrine it would be great timing

Turn 4:
Barbarian sword comes out of the fog in the north
There is now a shrine in Delhi

Turn 5:
Cut the copper in the north west, the spy didn't survive
Decided not to attack Vijayanagara, it would have been bad, 6 swords vs 2 axes and 3 archers

Turn 7:
Bismark has his copper hooked up again, not that it matters because their is a source under Vij

Turn 9:
Machinery done, still need civil service for maces so thats next

Turn 10:
Bismark builds the Golden Age wonder

Notes:
The south stack is waiting on a spy to riot either Delhi or Vijayanagara, leaving next turn would time the spy correctly

The north stack is waiting to see what their stack does

Well, a little bit of action but CIV crashed on me just as I finished my set so no pictures this time. I continued the war against Bismarck. Why are we fielding axes when we can use xbows though? Bismarck is miles away from getting any sort of counter unit to xbows so I think they'll be much more effective than swords/axes. Anyways...

I sold poly for 80 gold to Boudica at the start of the set. I also hired some specialists in some cities to slow city growth. I'd rather not whip with these cities since we're strapped for :) resources and we're also running mostly off of cottages right now. The north front doesn't see any action as Bismarck's troops are just hanging out in the jungle.

On the south, I accumulated some troops and sent them to take Bismarck's city built on copper. I took some losses but eventually conquered it (I lost some spies too...). The troops are halfway between Delhi and Bombay right now - we can go after either one as we see fit. I'd prefer Delhi first since it has the shrine in it. Also, I think I remember seeing the SoZ built in a far away land somewhere but I'm not sure.

Techwise, I took CS, then I finished HBR as well. Bismarck is fielding a few catapults now that he's finished construction so horse archers will be nice for taking out some catapults via flanking.

Edit: The war front (showing troops in Delhi):

Looks good. do you guys want to take a couple of turns getting money to upgrade to maces? that'd make our swords much more axe resistant. whip/build some spies/cats and go and take over the capital or vij on the way to the capital. I just saw our research rate. it'll probably take forever to get the money to upgrade all of our swords so that may not be the best idea. and it looks like our tech rate (even at 40%) is killing teh AI's
