DMAW04 - A Testing War

OK, at long last I could play my turns. Sorry about the delay.

The economy was picking up, and I decided to build a settler for a new production city. I tried to get Medina, but Saladin reinforced the city before I could bombard the defences and prepare my troops, and I was forced to retreat. Another stack managed to raze Kufah, but lost too many troops because of a bad run of the RNG. The German troops that have dared to come close have been crushed, but no Arabian troops have appeared. I suspect that Saladin is preparing a big stack, and we have to be prepared to deal with this.

256: German stack near gems destroyed without loses. Lost 1 spear to an Arabian elephant
257: Catapults bombard Medina
258: Saladin upgrades archer to longbow in Medina. Our 2nd leaves for Kufah
BT: Revolt in Persepolis :(
aw09.jpg

260: Saladin moves 4 catapults and 1 axeman into Medina. It is getting dangerous, so I have to retreat.
aw10.jpg

The 2nd stack attacks and razes Kufah, losing 2 catapults, 1 axe and 1 immortal despite quite good odds :( At least we got some money.
263: Building a fort next to the gems.
aw11.jpg

265: Tarsus founded. Workers are already busy building mines and irrigation for this new production city.

There is a German axeman and a swordsman south of the lake, but the troops nearby should be able to handle this.

Nice going there yena.

I've got it for tonite or tomorrow. I'll try and see if this save works for me.

I'm now patched up to 3.13 :cooool: Put me back in the lineup, Coach!

Peaceful turnset for an AW game for me. But the action is just starting to get fired up.

Learned Civil Service

Civ4ScreenShot0000-8.jpg

I continued on with Machinery. Some maces and crossbows would do us good. I also switched to Bureaucracy.

A barb town spawned near Aksum. Once the sword is finished, raze it for some more cash.

Civ4ScreenShot0007.jpg

On the front line, here's the situation.

Civ4ScreenShot0006-3.jpg

The fort is finished. I suggest another fort 1N of it and we can leave minimal defenders there and taking our army out for a wild run.

Ok, I got this as well. A fort isn't that all-powerful you know, it merely adds some defensive bonus IIRC ... we definitely cannot leave a minimal defense. It may turn out we need more since we have to spread the defenses to two tiles instead of one. On the bright side, splitting into smaller defenses also mean less vulnerable to collateral damages.

I think I will play this one first, and take my own sweet time with Fata Morgana.

I suggest building a missionary for Tarsus so it can expand the borders to include the clam.

Take a hard long look at our striving empire ... a few points of note -- all related to confusion.

  • We have no shrine. For that, I have signposted a city to produce "prophet". It will take 90 turns. :crazyeye: But it will get us the prophet. But, maybe once Beijing built a temple, we can run a priest there to get a prophet going. For the time being, make sure the priest stay in city signposted.
  • Three more cities have yet been confused, especially glaring is the new prod city (as yena pointed out) and Beijing (which is close to happy cap) -- yet our only city capable of missionary is building a cat?
  • We are still in No-State. We are wasting a free happiness everywhere. Get confused!

With that, I set off with my turns. Played 15, I hope that is the normal number of turns for an Epic SG.

What kind of crappy random event is this?? I choose the apparent-best choice ... thinking just 1 turn of revolt, right? Better than losing 1 pop or 2 pop.

DMAW4-AD1290-revolt.jpg

No ... :aargh: The event returns next turn. Damned. Choose to deduct gold and quench the rebellious slaves. Stupid evil spirit of random events!!! Should at least tell me that choose ignore would caused the event to recur!!!

On the war front, I moved our forces off from the fort, seeing as the coast is clear. The German forces down south moved close to our two stacks and decided to runaway. Cowards.

As punishment of their cowardice, I razed Stuttgart:

DMAW4-AD1290-stuttgart.jpg

Back in the backyard of Persia, we razed the barbarians' squattering settlement as well.

DMAW4-AD1310-Uzbek.jpg

All these razings would get more interesting as we get maces online:

DMAW4-AD1315-Machinery.jpg

I went on with Engineering so that forces can get to the front line faster. Also adding pikes to our maces would create a formidable stack of doom that the war elephants cant do sh!t abt. And lastly, trebs would be a nice addition to the foresaid stack of doom that we are going to have.

Mua-ha-ha-ha-ha!

As I was dreaming of our future stack of doom, a real one appeared in our doorstep, yanking me awake.

DMAW4-AD1320-huge-stack.jpg

Uh-oh, trouble.

Fortunately, the cute, darling spirit of random events intervened:

DMAW4-AD1320-random.jpg

Ha! Got to love the angel!

And the intimidating stack of beasts dispersed away, presumably going for Germany.

DMAW4-AD1325-dispersed.jpg

I seized this downtime to revolt to Confusion

DMAW4-AD1335-convert.jpg

and also approach Medina, and razed it.

DMAW4-AD1340-Medina.jpg

Next turn, sally's stack of chariots appeared out of nowhere and decimated the heroes who had taken the city of Medina. I promptly retreated, and meet up with our reinforcement -- shiny new maces.

Well done indeed :goodjob:

I said that Saladin was up to no good, so that stack didn't surprise me. Incredibly lucky break with the Arab-German war. I didn't even think it was possible to have AI war in an AW game. We really need pikes to deal with the elephants.

OK, got it! Probably for tonight, otherwise tomorrow. Nice work Yena, Bismark, GreyFox.

I'll try and utilise the war between our two enemies, and get us more powerful units. I'll play 10 turns as before, unless someone tells me otherwise before I play.

OK, sorry about the wait. Not a lot happened this turnset, a few battles, but nothing major.

Turns 290 - 300

290 - Did a little MM to increase beakers to +145gpt, and balance our gpt (0). Engineering will now arrive a turn quicker: 7 turns. Pillaging party splits, 2/3 enter for more pillaging and other 1/3 remain outside to heal for 2 turns.

292 - "Islam has been founded in a distant land". 2 Egyptian units move towards our borders - nothing to be frightened of.

dmaw1.jpg

293 - Then a significantly larger Egyptian stack appears, this is something to be wary of...I move the now healed part of the pillaging stack towards our borders just in case.

dmaw2.jpg

295 - The stack can't make it's mind up on where to enter my borders...it chooses the stronger defended part (for some strange reason...)

dmaw3.jpg

296 - Heh, 2 "We love the Prime Minister" days give our economy a nice boost for a turn

dmaw4.jpg

297 - Engineering discovered, I start on Sailing (1 turn) going for Calendar (another 4 turns) so we can use the abundance of happiness resources we have.

dmaw5.jpg

Egyptian stack remains in square SE of fort for this turn. I attack with the 2 macemen, each destroying his target.

298 - Pillaging party attacked, 1 mace destroyed. Also, Egyptian SOD attacks at last, destroying 1 mace, but losing against a couple other units. They move away.

dmaw6.jpg

299 - Pillaging party attacked again, I move them on a retreat route. Egyptian stack moves back towards us again. Pillaging is fun:#

dmaw7.jpg

300 - Heavy losses in pillaging party :(, I suggest either a suicide mission or something, because they aren't going to last till next turn. That's kinda good in one way, because our economy is dropping a little low again with so many units.

dmaw8.jpg

The situation back home:

dmaw9.jpg

The situation inside Arabian borders:

dmaw10.jpg

Mecca has lost pop. points, and commerce too from the pillaging. That's one good thing I guess.

So, Calendar next turn. I recommend the next player switch the specialist to a merchant in Beijing for our gpt, I made it a scientist to get Cal next turn, instead of in two turns.

Oh, and this is my 1000th post in CFC, after being a member for 5 and a half years! :D (that's at least 3 years more than any of you...wow)

:wallbash: I can't believe I forgot the save again, sorry guys - I'll be back from lectures in a couple hours, I'll do it then! Say by 2pm GMT :)

Save posted.

So, what do you think about the tech choice? Going for Calendar? Some of the calendar resources are quite nice for commerce, and we do need to significantly strengthen our economy, otherwise we shall be out-teched by the AI.

I'm also wondering how we are going to destroy the other AI...Saladin has longbows, and capturing a city from him with even 2 of those fortified in it will require some sacrifices, which we cannot afford too often.

I did leave the injured stack unmoved for turn 130, letting the next player decide what to do with it.
