Do you like the new forum?

Graphically, it's massively attractive. I like not having to type in code for italics and such. Haven't done too much more exploring. I may have to retire my avatar after..er, twelve years? because of the resolution.

So how do you think this compares with TrekBBS' migration? Unlike there, where AntonyF gave us plenty of notice so we could archive stuff that wouldn't be coming along (ie. the photo albums; I had a nice collection of Trek and space-related lolpics), we got absolutely no warning here. So some things are just gone. Some social groups were well-used over the years and had thousands of posts. It would have been nice to be able to save those.

As for your avatar, it's okay. It doesn't have the same contrast with the background as before (I've always used the Dark Blue here and Old Grey at TrekBBS), but the image itself is okay.

When did this update happen? I take it that it's recent, but it's been a few months since I logged in, I think.

You may have noticed that I've finally updated my av -- finally had to leave Mistfit's transparent one behind. Surely I set a record with that thing, if anyone keeps such records. :-p My 'Trekkie at Large' is still safe, though. Unfortunately I don't know when I started using it...somewhere between 2003-2005.

Silly thing to make a tradition of, but eh. :p

I don't recall offhand; it was sometime in the spring, I think. I saved the contents of my photo album and snagged the images of the open/closed communicator icons (which we've been begging AntonyF to restore, but he hasn't bothered).

We were encouraged to go to the beta site and experiment; AntonyF said he preferred to find problems there and solve them so when the actual switchover happened there wouldn't be so many issues to resolve. People went wild with the fonts while they could, but alas they were disabled. :(

We held a deathwatch/wake for the old forum in TNZ (and, I think, in Miscellaneous). The switchover was about a half-hour late, but it finally happened.

I think what people miss most about the old forum there is animated avatars. I like the current one that I flanged up, but still miss my "tractor beam smiley".

I didn't join until 2007, so I missed your early years there. I've only ever had two avatars - the tractor beam and my current one - not like here, where I change avatars every few months (usually a cat one).

Hey, if it pleases you and is harmless to others, why not? I've got "traditional avatars" (or themes, rather) on several forums.

I've never changed my avatar here. It's almost a point of pride now. :)

I still can't fully tell what your avatar is though! :p

Forum is okay, but it's not quite as fast to notice if there are any replies to the threads I'm participating in.

I'm now revealing a state secret, but see anything familiar? :p

I'm not a fan of the what that, if I reply to a post on page 7 of an 8 page thread (for example), then my post will then appear at the bottom of page 7, along with 2 or 3 of the preceding posts on page 8. This makes it look as if everything from page 8 has been brough forward for you to read on the same page, but actually it hasn't and it just misses out a chunk of intervening posts with no indication that it's doing that. Why does it do that? I can't imagine it's anything other than a bug, it's that bad.

I don't think it is a bug. It is a totally different process. Before you could see a few of the last post. Then you had to open up a separate window to see the whole thread.

Now your posting box is at the bottom of every page, and you can move back and forth in the thread. I have yet to figure out how to get in and out of preview mode though. That I have saved for last minute edits.

Any new post still have the 'NEW' indication until you change threads. There is a live update process that saves your current post, but it may have bugs, as sometimes it seems adding additional post to reply to gets "buggy".

You can even leave a thread, and come back and your posting box will still contain the work not submitted to the thread. And that may lead to more, "posting in wrong thread", unless one can actually change their train of thought when flipping through threads.

Sounds fun! I remember camping out in chat rooms at CFC during various big forum upgrades. This one (and the one at Trekbbs) caught me by surprise, though.

Prior to the Sinatra with a transparent background, I used a Starfleet delta here, and before that a Crusader from Conquests. By the time I registered at TrekBBS I was using Frank pretty much everywhere except for blogger. (There I was using a 19th century writer, Robert Ingersoll..)

In a sense I'm still using the same avatar, this one is just higher-res and without the transparent bit.

It got pretty late at night, and I think the last die-hards were teacake, cooleddie74, and myself (at least in TNZ). There were a few others in Miscellaneous. The threads are probably still there, along with threads mourning the old skins.

I like this current one better, actually. With the transparent one, I was always wondering what he was looking at.

I've been away awhile and when I tried to check in on the new Civ VI comments I didn't recognize the place. It seems bright and shiny and I wonder what the Christmas decorations will look like. Do we have to log in everytime?

On that note, I hope those ugly Christmas smileys have been tragically lost during the migration.

1) when will there be a decent forum skin?

2) Leoreth, go tell your superiors ( :mischief: ) that it is a terrible idea to have the avatar exist in two sizes, one as a profile image and one (cropped) as the forum avatar. Restore it back to the normal at once :o

Still no black ones though. Just slap something together, some white text on a black background. It's hard to look at this.

I think you can set automatic login. But you have to do it on the new forum at least once.

Not if you check the relevant box so the forum remembers you.

Not to worry about the Christmas smileys. I've got copies saved in my Photobucket account so if they have been lost, I'll just send my own along to the admins. :D

You're in luck! There's already two. :)
Where?

This place is not going to look or feel right until there's something resembling Dark Blue.
