People have always been paranoid and stupid. Racism? Nothing new there either, that idea was invented at least three thousand years ago. Except that three thousand years ago, our two Arabic-speaking passengers wouldn't have been detained for speaking Arabic on a plane.

The real truth is, humans are getting nicer over time, rather than nastier.

People that dance at the idea of a failing American nation often forget that there are several steps between "Huge Massively Powerful Republic" and "Collapsed Ruin" that occurred in the Roman Model, and I highly doubt the Europeans would enjoy "Military Empire that crushes all opposition and extorts all riches to support the decadence of the Motherland while bleeding the slave lands dry to the point of a 1000 year Dark Age".
Although to be fair, I wouldn't be alive to see the Dark Age and Alizee would make a damn fine slave concubine for me, one of the proud American Overlords.

Empires often fall very quickly. And even if you collapsed into some despotic militarist empire, I wouldn't care, because no matter what your propaganda officers say, you can't conquer Europe, China or anybody else except small failed states like Iraq, and even there you can't keep peace and order.

Wishful thinking. We had this discussion many times before, and the only rational conclusion was that the US wouldn't be able to transport enough troops to defeat the conventional forces in mainland Europe.
