I read all of the original six books and more of the prequel ones than I should have so I'd echo the recommendation to stay clear...

Haven't seen the movie; would have played some of the games I'd imagine if I was really around playing rts's back then but I wasn't, and probably couldn't stomach such old games compared to modern ones now.

Dune- Favorite SF story ever!
Dune Messiah -Weak follow-up
Children of Dune -weaker follow-up
God Emperor of Dune -Passable for "paperback SF"
Heretics of Dune -Completely awful
Chapterhouse Dune- Just die already

Kinda agree but not entirely, though the books did go downhill. I will say I absolutely hated the Bene Gesserit and increased focus on them in the novels was bleh. But I also think the later Dune books are still worth reading for the huge number of new ideas and influences you might see in other sci-fi.

See, the thing is, I liked the Bene Gesserit. I thought it was one of the most a great fictional secret society. But the later books are just so poorly written, that I cannot believe I finished them. God Emperor is a little better, just because the Leto II character is interesting and the concept of his motives relatively compelling.

Dune was one of the books that I was recommended I should start read, along with the Lord of the Rings.

The copy of Dune I got is a trilogy edition that includes Dune, Dune Messiah and Children of Dune. I liked the first one but found the other two a bit slow. After reading I can now spot when films rip it off.

I found Dune slow, but brilliant :goodjob: I wonder if you'd like God Emperor of Dune

I have read all the books (the original sixology twice), including all the prequels, sequels, and interquels, played a bunch of the Dune games, seen the movie and tv series..

When I was bungyjumping in New Zealand a couple weeks ago, I was busy reciting the litany against fear right before my jump.. (I'm afraid of heights).. It actually helped, but I feel like a bit of a geek for doing it

That's awesome. And you're not alone in repeating that chant under your breath. ;)

I used the Litany against Fear in a Creative Writing paper I had to write. I lucked out because the teacher was a sci-fi nerd and gave me bonus points for that.
