I hate smoking. I live with a couple of smokers. They smoke outside. One of them only recently moved in. A couple of days ago I walked into the sitting room to see a cloud of some gas rising above his head. We were talking about something else as I stared at the dissipating gas when he asked me if it was ok for him to use his e-cigarette inside.
I was only vaguely aware of the existence of these devices before hand and wasn't sure what to make of the situation.
"What do they emit" (paraphrasing)
"Just water and fruit flavours"
"Fair enough"
So I've gotten 'round to doing some brief research on their emissions, and there's not a great deal of data yet as they've only recently become popular, but the short of it is that they do emit nicotine (and some can emit a lot if used inproperly.) There are also many different types and little regulation (though their absence from work and pubs seems to imply that the smoking ban applies to them), so the precise emissions of any given make is uncertain.
Admittedly, one of the things I hate most about cigarettes is the awful smell. One of the major drawbacks of going to the pub when I lived in Austria was the absence of a smoking ban, which meant the bars stank, and your clothes would stink by the end of the night too. The particular e-cigarette I've become acquainted with smells pleasant or doesn't smell at all depending on proximity.
I'll be retracting my consent.
Where do you stand on e-cigarettes?
