E-Cigarettes - Socially Acceptable Smoking?

I hate smoking. I live with a couple of smokers. They smoke outside. One of them only recently moved in. A couple of days ago I walked into the sitting room to see a cloud of some gas rising above his head. We were talking about something else as I stared at the dissipating gas when he asked me if it was ok for him to use his e-cigarette inside.

I was only vaguely aware of the existence of these devices before hand and wasn't sure what to make of the situation.

"What do they emit" (paraphrasing)
"Just water and fruit flavours"
"Fair enough"

So I've gotten 'round to doing some brief research on their emissions, and there's not a great deal of data yet as they've only recently become popular, but the short of it is that they do emit nicotine (and some can emit a lot if used inproperly.) There are also many different types and little regulation (though their absence from work and pubs seems to imply that the smoking ban applies to them), so the precise emissions of any given make is uncertain.

Admittedly, one of the things I hate most about cigarettes is the awful smell. One of the major drawbacks of going to the pub when I lived in Austria was the absence of a smoking ban, which meant the bars stank, and your clothes would stink by the end of the night too. The particular e-cigarette I've become acquainted with smells pleasant or doesn't smell at all depending on proximity.

I'll be retracting my consent.

Where do you stand on e-cigarettes?

I'm not into them but I think they're mostly harmless and people should be allowed to have them wherever.

Where I live they are regulated largely the same as cigarettes. Can't use them at bars or at work or even in some parks.

They don't do it for me. they aren't the same as having an actual cigarette. If I could use them where ever then it'd be fine.

Given that, if I am forced to act as if I am smoking a cigarette when using these things, then why wouldn't I just smoke a cigarette?

Neither of which are reasons I smoke in the first place.

I wouldn't be cool with people smoking them in an elementary or secondary school, as nicotine is an addictive substance I don't really want to encourage kids to take up, but other than that I don't have any problem with them. As I haven't been smoking myself for ~3 1/2 months I don't particularly appreciate being around people actively smoking(mostly since it makes me want one) I don't mind my friends coming over that use e-cigs. I let them smoke in the house when my son's asleep. Otherwise they tend to sneak a quick puff or two when he's out of the room and that's ok too.

Honestly there needs to be more studying done on them before I have a strong opinion. If they truly just emit harmless vapor id support letting them be used in public and if they are truly healthier i wouldnt regulate them as harshly as cigarettes. For now though all these are just claims the manufacturers are making with little hard facts.

Much better than actual cigarettes from a non-smokers' POV. Possibly a decent way of quitting too. I'd encourage smokers to switch to e-cigarettes.

And eventually wean them off it altogether.

As a semi-regular e-smoker and a rare cigarette smoker, I think regulating e-cigs like normal ones is the optimal route to take. They're way too easy to get a hold of still. I can go online and buy $200 worth of nicotine laced juice, and not have to sign upon receiving the mail, or prove anything age-wise.

The emissions are also still a bit weird. There's a brief scent when first let out, but it disappears within a second or two. What I've read also suggests that some nicotine persists in the vapor, which would seem to be reason to regulate it like cigarette smoke.

Mostly there's a paucity of information on them that needs to be filled. I'd much rather stand next to someone smoking an e-cig than a normal cig (the latter still stink), but I'd rather not deal with either, and I make sure to smoke or vape in our detached garage where I don't bother anyone.
