Egypt - Cleopatra Thread

As expected, the War Chariot has been confirmed as Egypt's UU.

I'm curious if the Maryannu name is official or an error in translation.

It would be nice. I always liked Thebes because Amon was my favorite god. But between Cleopatra and 2/3 of the egyptian wonders being from Alexandria i believe it makes sense as a capital

You like THEBES?
And are you aware the original THEBES was an important/large city in ancient GREECE?
THEBES is the Hellenized version of the proper, ancient Egyptian, WASET.

Why not use proper names for each country and language, and not the popular, western/English language versions?

I mean, when playing as Greece, I would like to be able to found Thebes, but if Egypt is in the game (and for me they most often are) I cannot do so.

I urge Firaxis to use original city names, just in Latin Alphabet.
Moskva should replace Moscow, Waset instead of Thebes, Roma instead of Rome, and so on...

deduction points to yes.

During the IGN trailer breakdown, Ed pointed to the Forbidden City, Colosseum, Great Wall, and Sphinx. He said two are Wonders, and two are Unique Improvements. So far we have seen the Colosseum as a Wonder. I think we have seen the Forbidden City as a Wonder on a build list during E3. Quill18 stated that the Great Wall is an improvement, probably only built by China.

That leaves the Sphinx as a Unique Improvement.

Hell, photos point to yes. I'm on phone right now so can't link, but Arioch has them up on his site.

So Cleopatra is confirmed as the leader of Egypt.

Language spoken in leader screen: Coptic

Agenda: "Queen of the Nile" - she likes powerful militaries and will try to ally with them

"Cleopatra likes me because I've been building up my army to take out that barbarian camp, but if you don't have a powerful military, she won't give you the time of day. Later, when my army loses forces facing the barbarian camp and I explore too close to her border, our relationship declines. She especially gets mad once I meet and stay on friendly terms with Teddy Roosevelt, whom she dislikes. Rumors and gossip show up about leaders throughout the game; this new system gives you more information to react to and plan your decisions around."

UU: Chariots (probably)

Capital: Giza

Right so now i am angry, in what i've seen egyptian units are african (nubians) even though cleopatra would've used greek styled units she WAS ptolemy after all.
Another piece of history now sacrificed to afrocentrism

And another thing the capitol during her reign i believe was ALEXANDRIA i know civs arent always for historic accuracy but they really blew it here.
Dear god
please do not let them make Carthaginian units the same culture group as egypt
Carthage was a liby Phoenician colony
and its army was mostly Iberian

Still i like how she looks maybe we get multiple leaders for each civ ala civ 4?
:egypt:
Edit: no idea how to delete other post merged with this one for more cohesive discussion

Sphinx as mass produced improvement is as ridiculous idea as any other mass produced wonder of the world.

Sphinxes were more than just the big one. Smaller ones were used to decorate temples, gates, and other notable locations.

They could have went for Hatshepsut but no...

i think cleopatra is much more recognizable to kids and to be honest i think civ is a kid game in many respects sure you can be adult and love it just like mario but i see civ as a kinda Kids first strategy game a gate to victoria 3 or HOI 4 y'know?

A gateway drug?

Cleopatra is much more recognizable to people in general. At least in terms of ancient Egypt leaders actually being leaders and not being mummies and tombs some British guys raided or whatever.

Actually, I'm not even sure that kids would be more likely to know Cleopatra than other ancient Egyptian leaders compared to adults. At least kids might take a world history class and remember something from that about other ancient Egyptians. Adults (at least the less young ones that aren't particularly interested in ancient history) have probably forgotten most of that and remember what they've seen in movies and TV more vividly.

Cleopatra has been a civ before anyway. It's not new.
She's still an iconic leader. and they've stated in a few of the E3 interviews that they were after leaders with big personalities.

It makes a nice change from all the perfect leaders they have leading civs in Civ V. Heroes and idealised people, who led their civilizations into golden ages ad were perfect in everyway.
Now it's leaders with personality and charm. with memorable stories. Who hasn't heard of Cleopatra?

I use a similiar stance while modding. Who's the most famous and interesting leader?
I picked Zenobia for Palmyra, even though people told me her husband was a greater leader. Why? because she was fascinating, deceptive, strong, and build a short-lived empire. She went against the Roman Empire.
I picked Leonidas as leader of Sparta because of 300. He's famous, despite not being Sparta's greatest leader. his last stand was amazing.
Vasil Levski as leader of Bulgaria, despite never being a leader of the country itself. But a revolutionary who helped with years of fighting for independence, despite his own failures he is still seen as a national hero. He died before his country was free.
