Ekmek's Civ4 Leaderhead Gallery

This has been one of the single most infuriating parts.
That and having to watch that intro movie, while I hit buttons frantically to end it.
Watching it once, is nice, but every time you load the game? Unless there is something I am missing.

the config.ini should have an option for it. I havet watched the inrtro in weeks.

I like the concept of the policies, I just think they are poorly impliment.
I think that they should be divided up, into various "forms" of government.
i.e. there is a Socialism policy tree, and as you invest into each tree, your civs government gets deeper and deeper into one "ism", if you complete the tree and run all the policies, your governemt would resemble a form of communism, and thus preventing you from running some other policies that directly conflict with it..
The alternative, is investing evenly in various forms,... creating some kind of hybrid government system with various aspects. say a Representative Democracy with some Socialism elements.

Soulds like a decent mod concept. Have the initial SPs be republic, monarchy, or aristocracy and then as it gets more advanced you throw in the economic concepts or new government types like communism and fascism.

but, again, sorry for aiding in taking the topic off of the leaderheads.

This us my thread and I figure this is the best way to discuss it with my fans

I downloaded the demo and got it running (badly) via virtualization on my Mac. I'm not that impressed to be honest.

There's stuff that I love (hexagons, global happiness, new resource system), stuff that want to like but can't as it's just not implemented well enough (city states, diplomacy, 1UPT, the interface) and stuff that I dislike (the AI, social policies). Overall though I just didn't have that same sense of fun or excitement with it. When Civ4 was first announced I lost all motivation to play or mod Civ3, it was just that awesome.

In some ways I'm glad there isn't a Mac version yet as I think it's probably going to take an expansion and a lot of modding to get Civ5 to a really enjoyable point for me. At the moment I feel like I want to port a few cool new features back to Civ4 rather than port the missing things forward to Civ5.

I know it's far too early to know anything but the SDK worries me a great deal. It still uses a .dll and all this talk of proprietary compressions/formats - not being able to use any tools but those of the SDK - increases the likelihood that the SDK will be unavailable or limited on the Mac.

Time will tell I guess. In the meantime I have a pseudo-duty to give my fellow stubborn Civ-on-Mac folk something interesting to play so back to working on my mod! Good to know some of you guys will still be lurking these forums with me though.

Here's my very very early take on Civ 5 after about 1 hr of messing around.

Bottom line: I think it's going to take a long time to get it to the customized enjoyable state we have Civ 4 in now. Things like the Bug mod and all the leaders and content available for Civ 4 are missed.

Overall, it's very pretty I really like the clouds that give way to revealed tiles then to fog of war. The combat animations are very enjoyable so far watching some warriors scrap is pretty much perfect.

I'm not impressed with the leaders. It's a nice "win" for realism that they speak their own language but it seems like a gimmick and isn't enjoyable. The Civ4 leaders don't speak and I don't think anybody raised hell about that, it's just not needed. I'd rather have easilier moddable leaders as getting leaders to match what's in there will be pretty impossible to lip sync so adding any leaders will NOT match what's shipping with The Game. It could be justified that they don't match if mods added mute leaders, then it would work to match what's in there but lets be honest how many great mute leaders has the world seen? You just never hear of Lothar the Mute, great leader of Northern Bombaly. That was an attempt at humor, I hope I didn't offend any mute people or people with loved ones who are mute.

Back on topic, I think it has potential but to get it as slick as Civ 4 will take time. Will the community sink the effort and elbow grease needed into it is the BIG question. Are the modding tools even available to do so is another big concern, and it may not be possible for some as the gentlemen with the MAC stated (Xyth).

Brilliant! I actually laughed out loud at this one.

These are my feelings too. The SDK will be awesome no doubt, with "unprecedented modding capabilities", but modding anything graphical will be much harder. I like the artdeco-ish artstyle used for buttons and other static images but it's going to be challenging to replicate. Mind you, we thought the same thing more or less with Civ4 and you guys got pretty damn good at that in the end.

Additionally though, I'm pretty sure Ekmek or someone said that the Civ5 leaders are going to be completely unmoddable due to being made in some software worth many thousands of dollars. So even reskinning is out. I guess that does leave it wide open to the leaderhead makers to invent a new format for leaders though. Wouldn't surprise me if mods eventually disable the Firaxis Civ5 leader graphics entirely and replace them with their own for consistency.

I've thought about that aspect some more and we should be able to use WINE or virtualization to run the SDK tools if need be. We'd still need Mac-specific handling of the .dll though.

Well I think the game is good, but siege is really complicated. I had only the demo at least, so I think everything is compressed a bit. Maybe I need DX 11 to have graphics like in videos and screenshots, but it is nice too. The biggest thing that is missing is a WorldBuilder. In-game editor, not an external program. Leaderheads are nice and I love that they can speaking! City states are good, but AI is really aggressive and it doesn't fit to the game I think. I don't have problem with the interface but I must agree with Ekmek somehow. It remindes me to BioShock a bit. :D Religion is missing, civics are missing, but I like the new, buying-territory-for-gold thing. Natural Wonder are exciting, so I really like to found them (but they are rare).

Back to leaderheads: I think they did it with the RAD game tools' program: Granny 3D so it will useful this point, not as Blender now.

Well, if I need to rate Civ 5 I give it 9/10
Civ 4 was only: 6.5/10 to me, so it is a huge upgrade of the Civ. :)

Hi guys, sorry to break up the civ5 talk, but I would like to request a LH, (never done this before so bear with me) and I spose this is the place to do it. I would like to request David Lange, the 32nd prime minister of NZ. For those who don't know him (probably most of you:D) he was IMO one of our greatest PMs. He stood up against the world superpowers in making NZ nuclear-free and introduced a lot of major reforms in the government. He was very popular with the public and was renowned as having a great sense of humour (something he took to parliament).

I don't know whether you'd be interested but if you could that be great! I realise your busy with other LH too, so I can wait. I just noticed today that there seems to be no Kiwi leaders on the site and I think as a nation we are at least as deserving of at least one as some of the other obscure civs on here. Anywayz, again, if you can't (or just don't want to;)) I completely understand.

Thanks,

O and here are some pics lol

Hey Ekmek, don't want to rush you but any news on Theo (or your other WIP LHs)?

Also, earlier you said you will upload the shadered and/or updated version of about 10 of your older LHs. Mostly the ones IgorS shadered.
Those improved LHs are still not in the database (not even the files IgorS uploaded here), and many mod uses those leaders so the improved ones would be very nice to have...

EDIT: checked those older LHs, they are: Franz Jozef, Garibaldi, Pachacuti, Kruger, Dom Pedro II, Akbar, Xerxes, Metternich, Maria Teresa, El Cid
Hope I didn't miss any of them

If you really want the shadered versions you can download my mod and take the files from it. It doesn't look like Ekmek will work on them for the time being.

EDIT: I also shadered Bolivar.

yeah it might be awhile. I'm knee deep in civ5 right now. fortunately as I update LHs to put in civ5 it won't be that hard for me to throw some civ4's way.

Could you tell us more about that? Are you actually going to make Civ V leaders?

I'm definetely goingto make Civ5 leaders - once nexus lets us export. it has a few bugs but I'm planning on getting know-how on making Civ5 leaders to be a lot faster than it took us on Civ4.

If you recall it was about 2007-2008 when we started getting to firaxis-like leaderheads. Thats 3 to 4 years after civ4 was released. So I'm hoping once i get my first leader done we'll be close to there already. I think its realistic to do by mid-2011.

Are these LH going to be closer to Civ IV or more like the Civ V LHs?

Ekmek, did you find some time to work on Theo or any of the Civ IV LHs?

I'm also interested in the progress of making new leaders for CiV, if you want to give us some info on that...
