Elton John: 'Close Down the Internet!'

Actually the government could easily shut down the internet. All they have to do is lock down the tubes.

We could just shove Ted Stevens in the series of tubes. Two birds with one stone.

we'd have to chop him into about a trillion pieces, I wonder who'd do that for us :mischief:

Being an old BBS SysOp, I actually support the abolishment of the internet. Long live FidoNET!!

What does Elton John think he is?! He cant demand anyone to shut down the internets. It's not like he is going to Al Gore or Bill Gates and beg them to shut the internets down.

I'd rather close down the music industry.

Elton John vs. The Series of Tubes

He really can have some wacky opinions.

"...it would be an incredible experiment to shut down the whole internet for five years..."

You can't. You absolutely, practically cannot do this.
To be fair, he was probably speaking hypothetically.

Though it's still a stupid thing to say - we don't need to do the experiment, because we already have. Just look at that period of time before we had widespread Internet access. You know, almost the entire history of civilization!

He's being stupid in other ways - I mean, does his piano that he speaks of sit at home, or does he wheel it out into the streets to write music, like he thinks people using the Internet should do? (Does it count if I access the Internet from a laptop outside?)

And to top it off, he criticises bloggers, yet he's promoting these views on a website himself!

Wow, another person that is very good at what they're paid to do, and really really bad at things outside their specialty.

I guess I can't go on the internet anymore, since Elton John says its bad.

Elton John should be careful what he says about the Internet. Fox News tells me its full of internet hate machines, run by Hackers on steroids.

as bad as the internet has been for music, i think it is a positive change.

i'd probably have never heard of my favourite bands were it not for the internet...then again, if you didnt like radio back in the day you started a band that you wanted to hear...people are almost flooded by good music nowadays. it's almost too much to bear.

It means that the quality of the music has to stand out to be noticed. Instead of having a big advertising agency.

yes, but there are two spheres of influence in the world.

the ones who get music from the internet and the ones who don't.

the ones who don't are still hypnotized by crappy nickelback songs and all that crap, while the ones who are internet savvy tend to be the ones who want more. nothing wrong with being in either camp, unless you're in the first one and think you like good music. then you're a liar.

but one day the big advertising agencies will savvy up and start paying bloggers to feature bands (if it doesnt already happen) and the ilk.

Maybe not on the main board, but the seedier sites attached to it who are willing to go after anyone for just about anything are warming up.

 I laughed hard and everyone is sleeping oops.

I'd rather close down the music industry.
The record companies, their copyrights, contracts, and satanism can go. The rest of the industry can stay.
