We have just met UniversCiv. Proposing the following draft:

Salut UniversCiv,

Cordialement,
Ambassadeur Bowsling

Hey UniversCiv,

Would you like a vegetarian curry?

Our warrior Thunderfall, lonely for centuries, has finally found another civilized man in the wilderness. Even better, he is a warrior of the legendary Holy Roman Empire! The messenger has just arrived in Indira, and the celebrations have already started.

The CivFanatics are a peaceful people, thus why we chose Mansa Musa of India. We propose therefore a non aggression pact for fifty turns. We hope this will be the beginning of a long friendship.

Sincerely,
Ambassador Bowsling

 That's excellent, Bowsling

Thanks. :)

I just edited the drafts, changing "this is the beginning of a long friendship" to "this will be the beginning of a long friendship". Sounds less... matter-of-factish.

Excellent :goodjob:

Just thought of something. UCiv has not logged in since we met them, so with only 3 hours left on the clock we can probably check if they've met anyone based on their EP's against us. Let's not PM them or make any other efforts to reach them until the turn flips.

Did that. One thing I thought about them. They are ORG and they have Holy Roma. Those guys are going to REX heavy, good that we are not direct neighbors to have to compete with them for land :)

We got mail:
Hi,
Sorry for waiting !

And the Attachment (also saved in our GoogleDrive, sorry I couldn't figure out how to show it as an image):

Edit: Ok, here's my transcription.
From universciv
To civfanatics

Nice to meet you, Kankan from Indians
We would like to make a semantic correction: we are noth the Holy Roman Empire but the Gauls .
We'd love to eat a vegetarian curry with you :goodjob:
We are delighted to learn that there are men who do not think always to fight. After consultation with the village council we have requirements regarding the signing of the treaty. If you want a treaty of non-aggression you may follow some clauses listed below:

  • not come too close from our borders
  • inform us about the approximate distance between our civs and your geographic location
  • inform us about the known existence of others civilizations on our continent

If you share these informations with us, we will be sure that your intentions are really pacific.

We would like to underline another point: for now we consider that a treaty of 20 rounds is enough. Of course, this treaty would be renewable depending on changing circumstances. It goes without saying that if we encounter another civ we will keep you informed.

Last point, we advise you to be careful because there are not a lot of forests in the north and you have to protect your warriors from barbarians.

Hoping for future collaborative agreements, we send our greetings

I am in favor as long as they share the same data with us but still 20 turns is suprisingly short. I bet we are really close to thier borders.

Yeah, we can actually see the edge of their borders a few tiles north from where we originally met them, and they are currently sending a settler down near Thunderfall. I posted new pictures from T59 in the T51-100 thread.

Their stipulations definitely benefit them more than us. We already know where their land is, we know they haven't met anyone else, and a 20-turn nap does nothing but give them security that we won't choke this new city they're planting. That said, I'm fine with agreeing to everything. Builds good will, and we may need an ally on the other side of the Spaniards if things go sour with them.

I'm actually rather disappointed by the fact that they replied in English: it reminds me too much of a bilingual waiter switching from French to English because they recognize that you are an Anglophone. The file name (and content) makes it clear to me that they wrote the original in French and translated it into English for them.

Now for the actual content:
Nice to meet you, Kankan from Indians
I feel like I'm missing a French cultural reference. Wikipedia and Google both came up blank aside from the dance. I think "Kankan from Indians" is in fact a mistranslation of "Kankan des indiens", which should mean "Kankan of the Indians".
We would like to make a semantic correction: we are noth the Holy Roman Empire but the Gauls .
Noted. Cue the Asterix references!

The typo here "noth" means that this was manually translated, which is handy to know. Also signals that they are putting a lot of effort into their diplomacy. Also note the space before the period, this done in France-French, but not in the Quebec-French that I was writing in. Will do from here on in.
We'd love to eat a vegetarian curry with you
Excellent! :king:

This comes across as rather condescending and almost rude in English, especially the last sentence. This is not the case in French, so let's not offended by this.
not come too close from our borders
inform us about the approximate distance between our civs and your geographic location
inform us about the known existence of others civilizations on our continent
Well, this is the essential part of this message. We're the first team they've met as we already know. They haven't explored much and they know it, which signals to me that they have a weak military, highlighted even more so by the WPC-request - go away please! They know that this is a problem, indicated by their extensive requests for information. I'd suspect that they lost a warrior to a barb, if that fits into our demohacking schemes.
If you share these informations with us, we will be sure that your intentions are really pacific.
Well, here we have it: tell us what you've explored or we won't sign your beloved NAP.
We would like to underline another point: for now we consider that a treaty of 20 rounds is enough. Of course, this treaty would be renewable depending on changing circumstances.
That's... interesting. Clearly, they don't want to burn any bridges as far as early dogpiles go. Since they assume that we are their neighbour, they don't want to get tied into a long NAP with a potential rush target. They want to rush someone. Since we aren't their neighbours, this is really, really, really good news for us.
It goes without saying that if we encounter another civ we will keep you informed.
This was in the same paragraph as the above thing. This probably means they were following the same train of thought when writing that paragraph, even though the points are unrelated. This indicates that meeting someone else is a huge factor in whether or not they want to renew the NAP. I'm sure you all know what that means...

Last point, we advise you to be careful because there are not a lot of forests in the north and you have to protect your warriors from barbarians.
Interesting. This may be where they had their suspected barb loss. Open ground likely means one of two things: tundra/ice, or desert. I'll bring this up in map speculation.

Hoping for future collaborative agreements, we send our greetings

M & Ms great ambassador of the Gauls

Will try and find more on their ambassador. He joined February 2009 and has 1,500 posts.

I also found a seemingly trivial but interesting tidbit:

This is the avatar of a prominent CivFr member who plays on the UCiv team. Still not too sure what it's supposed to mean.

Great job Bowsling. Really appreciate the attention to detail.

Great job Bowsling. Really appreciate the attention to detail.

Agreed :)

Now, a good question here is: Do we wish to satisfy the French demands, given that they obviously want to keep their options open if we are close enough to be rushed?

Yeah, another amazing analysis, Bowsling. It's this kind of insight that is going to win us the game.

We should probably include an English version in our messages to them from now on, probably in front of the French version. Just like we felt slightly disappointing that they went to English when we clearly can communicate in French, we don't want to insult them by insisting on French when they are signalling English.

Thanks for bringing up the Kankan greeting, as I meant to ask about that. How mysterious that no one knows what that is.

As I said earlier, I'm fine with accepting their proposal. It's definitely one-sided, and we'd be doing it just to show that we want to be friends, and I think it would be a good idea to say as much in our message to them. Maybe we can also ask them for a description of their land or the directions where they've explored, but I don't think this is absolutely necessary.

Drafting a message way later than intended: :(

Salut UniversCiv,

Cordialement,
Ambassadeur Bowsling
Équipe CivFanatics

Hey UniversCiv,

Thanks for your quick reply! We really appreciate it when teams are quick with their diplomacy.

Forgive us for our naming mistake: we now know that the warrior Thunderfall drank too much Gaulish wine that night. With this mistake corrected, Asterix the Holy Roman has been pulled from the shelves and replaced with Asterix the Gaul. The children of Indira seem to like this version better.

Thunderfall travelled for a long time before he reached the borders of the Gauls. He met many other civilizations: the Egyptians of Realms Beyond, the Native Americans of WePlayCiv, and the Zulus of Spanish Apolyton.

Our cartographers have been theorizing about how this world is arranged. Our most accurate estimate:

o1oooooo2oooooo

oooo3oooooo4ooo

5oooooo6oooooo7

ooo8oooooo9oooo

1 - ?

2 - UCiv

3 - WPC

4 - ?

5 - RB

6 - Spanish Apolyton

7 - ?

8 - CFC

9 - ?

There are always about fifteen to twenty tiles between capitals.

Thank you for your warning about barbarians.

Sincerely,
Ambassador Bowsling

I removed the teams we haven't met yet from our map estimate to simplify things. Hope to get this sent by about 2:00 EST time, which is 8:00 in France. Suggestions about how to make the message less awkward are more than welcome.
