Fox06 -- Need For Speed

Ha, If Grey Fox changed his avatar to something trekkie (or if GreyFox's were evil) you could each post in the others' threads and no one would notice. That'd be fun for a moment or two.

To the game, Fox, I was putting guys on hills for observation. The forests just happened to be there because, I assume, no one has bronze working yet.

@doppleganger: I'd noticed our (un?)fortunate similarity of alias back 1 year ago when I visited the Star Trek Mod thread. I was thinking: "huh? I sure did not post in that thread." Thereafter, I have received a PM once from one of your team mate, confusing the names.

@Rex: I believe most of them should have Bronze Working by now, they just have not connected metals. We have try to keep it that way. Another reason to go for IW soon to prioritize pillaging of iron mines.

Report time.

Firstly must confess I thought it would be a quick set of turns to play but took much more attention to play, guess its all those choices of where to send units what to pillage but “Speed” was completely not on the menu!!

IHT

Hire 2 scientists in Miramar as suggested by “he who gets grump at too many mistakes”. Now of course a scientist will need to be fired when the Happy Cap lifts and its farm is rebuilt. Now of course this should happen in my turn set but at least if I forget “if what do you mean if -WHEN you forget..” I can claim in mitigation I have warned the next player to do it. Oooh yes and in that vein its probably worth checking that I am working the Pigs at carbon to let it grow as well as that is surely joining my “forget to do list”.

Consider covering all wooded hills with signs labelled “Keshiks don’t get defensive bonuses” but decide that would be a step too far. Must admit it is completely “automatic” for me to plonk a unit down on one of them whilst doing over-watch on a city…

Turn 1 535 BC. Lose Keshik outside Moscow to Archer… The RNG has started this turn set off with a good solid slap!!

Set Carbon to start growing, no point in reconfiguring Miramar until the farm is rebuilt

Turn 2 520BC Raze Madras, use the cash to increase research.
1madrasend.jpg

This is the first time I notice the AI being more “intelligent” in this scenario than under Vanilla as it appears to be trying to break our Blockade rather than just turtling up as it would in Vanilla.

Need to watch Ramesses if he gets close to construction as Elephants would play havoc with our Keshiks. Heliopolis moves to the top of my “Must Raze” list.
1heliopriority.jpg

Turn 3 505BC Pillage Tlateloco, with all his workers stuck in the city its going to take him a while to Rebuild.

Turn 4 490BC Finish Mao’s Archer stack outside C10H15N just in time to spot another stack inbound from Rameses / Asoka.
archerrush.jpg

Turn 5 475 BC Take down Memphis
1memphisdies.jpg

Catherine is doing a determined effort to break out, impressive. Keshik takes down first but next turn loses at 80% to the second archer…

1cathbreakout.jpg

Turn 6 460 BC Some pillaging of Ramesses
Amaze myself by remembering to configure Miramar now the farm is built.

Turn 8 Barbarian spotted who promptly disappears, worth seeing where he has gone as may well have founded a city somewhere in the fog
1barbahoy.jpg

Turn 9 City with unpronounceable name finishes its archer and moves onto a library.

Turn 10 Research on construction finished so I can end my turn set at a nice even number to keep the Boss happy !!

EOT issues

Have selected Iron Working mainly so we can deny Iron to the AI and mine the gems at Miramar.
Catherine has a new city which needs taking down
1novgorod-1.jpg

A couple of workers are being escorted home.
Force now being assembled to take down Heliopolis as if we can research Construction so can Ramesses
3rd great general will arrive soon

3rd great general will arrive soon
so what did y'all do with the first two? Inquiring minds and idiots want to know. Or did I miss it and it's back to (more) remedial education?

Admiral they are waiting for Cats so we can give them movement 2 and get them out of the city. The only siege engines we can use are Warlords!!

Ralph

Nicely done, Ralph. Good job razing those cities and defending at the same time. I see that you have some rough rolls, did you wash your hand before you play? ;)

My experience in Vanilla is that some AIs, the more aggressive ones, like monty, will try to break the siege when they have more than 3 defenders in the city. It seems in Warlords, all AIs are better at doing that.

We should probably build roads around c10h5n and produce an axe there so that we can kill some of the invaders with traditional melee units.

Are we gonna go all cats with 3 warlords? I am still inclined to have one sword or phant to add to our attack force. Just to add some flavors.

After iron working, where do people suggest we go? Perhaps literature to get the Heroic Epic enabled?

We have to be careful abt barbs ... they need no metals to spawn spears.

Roster of Riders
-- Fox == found his long lost brother with a space
-- Rex == busy selling c10h5n in nightclubs
-- Ralph == wants to deny phants to Ramesses
>> Bede == The war horn blows!
-- ChrTh == saddle up for the virgin ride
-- Berserks == when can my horsey go berserking again?

lurker's comment: thanks ralph. thought i went illiterate for a moment.

i'd almost pay real money to see something other than medic 3 cats :crazyeye: go with the hefalumps. just a suggestion. nice entertaining game guys. keep it up.

Got it and it is in the queue for Wednesday, I hope. Otherwise Thursday morning.

Good job keeping them dumb and unhappy, or dead. I'll just keep rolling the Keshiks westward.

Mr Toad's wild ride continues.

Use two of the captured workers to try and bait the enemy into the open at Novgorod and Thebes

Civ4ScreenShot0019.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0018.jpg

Ramses takes the bait at Thebes and we collect another archer's scalp. While at Novgorod it is Asoka who pops up out the woods, captures the worker and loses a stack of troops (archers and a chariot)

Civ4ScreenShot0024.jpg

And Ramses loses his elephants

Civ4ScreenShot0022.jpg

Meanwhile at Beijing a Keshik destroys a copper mine

Civ4ScreenShot0021.jpg

In the west the chariots run rampant over the improvements in Asoka's and around Tenochtitlan and collect a few more workers.

The first seige engine somes out of Carbon and gets its warlord attached. It is followed by another and an elephant. The seige engines get the movement promotion and up to CR3, while the elephant gets the Combat promotions and Leadership. The catapaults are dispatched to Persepolis with some supporting Ksehiks while the tusker heads off to the meth lab to support the forces there.

Iron Working comes in and we have some at Miramar and I start the scientists down the road to Monarchy so we can grow out the towns even more. And the religious techs we need for Monarchy is pretty cheap since everybody else has some. We seem to be able to keep up in terms of the troop training so I didn't think the Heroic Epic was needed quite yet, and getting the happiness boost from Heriditary Rule will make any melee troops we train doubly useful.

The catapults and Keshiks did their job and Persia is now history, even though he did manage to found a second town in the west before he died.

Civ4ScreenShot0028.jpg

That Keshik died, though, just before the fall of Perspolis

Civ4ScreenShot0029.jpg

so the cats and Keshiks at Persepolis moved onto Susa. Archers in a flatland city make great cannon fodder for leveling up CR catapults with Accuracy promotions.

And so it went

Civ4ScreenShot0031.jpg

Cyrus now offically dead and the force moves on to Thebes.

Civ4ScreenShot0034.jpg

The Chinaman sent a settler group out of Beijing that proved difficult to kill. A keshik died even though he was attacking on very favorable terms. A couple more were dispatched to finish them off.

Civ4ScreenShot0032.jpg

In the far west Asoka put a city on Russia's borders so the Keshik in the neighborhood popped himself another garrison archer

Civ4ScreenShot0033.jpg

I think it is fair to say Mongolia owns the battlefield

Civ4ScreenShot0036.jpg

though a final tour of the map shows that the Chinaman has managed to put a city in the Dark North

Civ4ScreenShot0037.jpg

pretty well done, Venerable! I love the workers bait trick, the AI always fall for that (wonder why the chinaman in the initial turns did not though).

Good job eliminating Cyrus. I was just wondering if we should keep a couple of the nearer persian/chinese cities.

We are now -4@40%, so maybe need to focus a bit on cottages. But we do have quite a bit of war plunder to sustain -ve income for a while.

I see we are heading towards Monarchy .... presumably Hereditary Rule for happiness?

This game is turning into a walk (okay, brisk walk) in the park ... maybe we should try Monarch, but in Monarch, the oppressing strategy won't work well since AI would advance fast enough to actually greet our riders with spears.

Riders' Roster

-- Bede == Commissioned 3 generals

-- Berserks == Getting ready to saddle up

Hey gang,

I'm up in The Place Where The Sun Don't Shine, so Berserks if you want to swap that's fine.

Hahahaha, you're not getting away that easily. Take your time, spend 24 hours and play both where the sun don't shine and where fastest means fiercest.

Since Rex seems to be MIA, I'll take both after you tomorrow evening.

Try it! You won't know until you've tried.

No chance I'll get to this game before tomorrow evening (East Coast time); in fact I forgot I need to go talk to the Priest about the Bambino tonight (Baptism planning) so I might not even get to the Sun Don't Shine until tomorrow

I'll post a Got It once I can (and if you haven't gotten to it yet)

K, I've got this for tonite or tomorrow morning.

And away we go ...

MM Carbon and Miramar to work more shields and money tiles since they're at growth cap, and hit enter ....

Our injured keshik by Bangalore dies a glorious death .... well, ok maybe not, he just died uselessly by an arrow. The chinese settler party moved into a forested tile, and our odds plummets to ~60%. And Thebes, which started with just 2 archers, grew to 4 archers and 2 workers.

Civ4ScreenShot0000-1.jpg

Well, seeing as how this game is "a walk in the park" I attack the chinese settler party with our odds :D Our first keshik wins with .6/6 remaining, and our second keshik retreats at .1/6 life  But we got ourselves another worker the following turn.

And the bombardment of Thebes begins, all the while he's busy building himself a settler there

I then noticed (translate: ) how fast we can build some wonders at Miramar ... alas it was not meant to be ....

Civ4ScreenShot0001.jpg

Our chariot scouting Aztec land discovers some distressing news ...

Civ4ScreenShot0002.jpg

He has spears. Luckily, by being sneaky and sqeaky our chariot destroyed their copper mine.

Civ4ScreenShot0004.jpg

Meanwhile, Catherine decided to gift us another worker, as if we don't have enough already.

Civ4ScreenShot0003-1.jpg

On the Egyptian front, Lysander sacrificed himself for the destruction of Thebes, 3 more workers, and another Great General to replace him.

Civ4ScreenShot0005.jpg

Catherine managed to sneak an archer by the city of gas, but a newly built keshik is there waiting already.

Civ4ScreenShot0006.jpg

After a few seconds of turning on my superior fog busting skills, I deducted the last egyptian city to be here...

Civ4ScreenShot0007.jpg

And our stack is currently right at it's border.

The AIs seems to be desperate to expand as just about every city has a settler in it even with just 2 defenders. We need more pults since all AI cities have at least 20% cultural defense.

Pretty well done, good job pillaging that copper mine.

Yeah that's the problem, the civ furthest away is the most likely civ to connect copper and produce one or two killers before our pillagers can reach them.

You probably didn't intend to "sacrifice" Lysander per se, more like you have a good odds but a bad roll caused him to die .... I hope! Because we can't afford to throw cats into the enemy like in other SGs ... Imperialistic or not, it is gonna to get increasingly longer to generate generals.

ChrTh, ready to take your turns?

Got it, will play this weekend.

Errrrr..as much advice as my teammates can provide would be greatly appreciated.

well, fox hit it on the head. protect the generals. we'll need them through the ages, so don't send them in at anything less than 99% odds.
