I am Malwai, Prophet of the Zan, and I am unconcerned with your goings-on. However, I will express my disappointment and condolences to you for the fact that the Fehan have, like so many before them, failed.

We thank Your Greatness for your mercy and benevolence. How did the Fehan fail Your Greatness?

The Fehan have surrendered to the siren song of blissful annihilation, and abdicated forever their responsibility to the universe. Thus, they are now, have always and shall forever be a failed species. Transcendence is the end of civilization. It is the point at which a civilization has crafted for itself a universe manufactured, which it finds preferable to the universe incarnate. They seize upon this lotus-eater machine, leaving ruination and destruction in their wake.

The Zan alone stand in stalwart opposition to the opulent treachery of transcendence.

We have heard rumors, but why would any state choose to do so? We, for one, would never! Our profits would drastically go down in a closed economy! We will lend whatever aid we can to your Crusade!

So say all too many species. Most of them fail to keep even this promise. They give in to the temptations of an imagined world, and disappear forever into their oblivion.

Or worse- they become like the Wera. Wicked and damned, the Wera are the abortion of Transcendance, its ultimate realization taken physical form. They are those who turned their back on the universe, but refused to leave. Now, they live not, but merely exist, torn between reality and unreality, half in one world and half in another. They are abominations in the eyes of both. For this, they are our ultimate enemies.

Now go and seek out whatever fate awaits you, little Akari. Heed these words, and perhaps you may yet be spared from the culling. I depart.

New Nation: The Dominion of the Shagwa, Part 1

A History of the Shagwa and the Chakwa, and the planet of Wa

On the Planet of Wa

The isolated planet known to its inhabitants as 'Wa' (lit. 'soil') lies on the fringes of known space. It has gone unnoticed by many of the sentient species of the Galaxy, but now, as the Shagwa go forth on their quest for slaves and glory, soon the rimward fringes of the Galaxy shall fear their fury.

Wa is a large planet, (roughly 1.2 times the size of the Earth), with a terrestrial structure and multiple biomes. The landmass is divided up into two large continents, one of which stretches around most of the Equator (approximately the size of Asia) and the other which is smaller further to the south and is an island continent (approximately the size of North America).

Wa is distinct and unique among other planets in that it is the only known planet in the galaxy to develop two sentient species independently of each other. The species are distantly related at best, with one being descended from the Gartak order of scaled, arboreal beasts of the Equatorian jungle, while the other is related to the peaceful grazing beasts of Antipodea.

On Equatoria and the Shagwa

The continent of Equatoria stretches across much of the Equatorial regions of Wa. It is almost entirely a densely wooded jungle, where it rains almost constantly. The rich biodiversity of Equatoria is matched only by its danger. Almost every plant on the continent is highly poisonous, with many being actively predatory - the Geksha vine in particular is happy and willing to prey on species up to the size of an Earth hippopotamus, using its immense strangler vines to ensnare prey and drag it into its cavernous building sized maw. On top of the vast array of poisonous and predatory plants, almost every animal in the continent is some form of predator or a violently protected omnivore. All species native to Equatoria are vicious survivors bred and built for combat, and the Shagwa are no different.

The Shagwa are a sentient species which evolved in the harsh jungles of Equatoria. They have long, heavily armoured bodies, with their backs covered by a series of overlapping plates stretching from neck to their long, prehensile tails. They evolved from the highly intelligent Gartaks, an order of small, arboreal animals which developed eight limbs, four of which are short and come out of its chest, though nimble, and designed to assist it cling to trees. The Shagwa have retained these vestigial limbs, though they have become shorter and with far less reach. However, the Shagwa are no reptilian earth-monkeys. They have developed heavily armoured backs, to resist the predations of the great Dactyls that fly across the continent. Their primary forelimbs have lost their grasping hands and instead grown long, scythelike bone projections which descend almost to their feet, capable of slicing a lesser species in half with a single blow. Their rear limbs have become stocky and powerful to support their lithe, muscular bodies in bipedal motion. Their snouts are elongated, and full of sharp, ripping teeth, and their four eyes are keen and sharp, granting them near 360 degree vision that is crucial in the fight for survival that is the jungles. In short, the Shagwa are fighting machines, geared for survival.

However, these adaptations have come at a cost. The Shagwa are highly intelligent, on par with the many sentient species of the galaxy. However, of their four pairs of limbs, one is for feet, while another has lost its grasping appendages in favour of the immense scythes they use for combat. The remaining four are vestigial and rudimentary at best, stretching out only a foot and a half from their bodies at max and with their grasping appendages being very small. The Shagwa are unable to build or use tools, and never developed them on their own - the existence of their arm-scythes were sufficient for hunting and fighting, and they never required any other weapon that would have eventually led to the usage of tools.

As such, the Shagwa lived a nomadic existence in the jungles of Equatoria. They operated in tribes of almost five hundred, cooperatively hunting and herding the other creatures of the jungles. Despite a lack of tools, they developed a complex and nuanced language, though writing was unknown to them. They developed a strict hierarchy based on size, with moving up in the ranks decided by combat. The Shagwa were very fond of combat with each other, with the leader of a tribe being the one who fought its way to the top. The young and eggs were raised by collective, with all Shagwa being raised as part of a creche by a rotating member of the tribe - Shagwa are asexual and reproduce by self-fertilisation, laying two to three eggs per laying season. If they are lucky, one egg will hatch into a Shagwa - as they lack maternal or paternal feelings for their offspring. The Shagwa warred for thousands of years, tribes fighting over valuable hunting lands while individuals fought over power within the tribe itself. It is believed that the early Shagwa did have some form of religious belief (they certainly understood the concept, and believed that the Chakwa worshipped the soil itself), but due to the lack of writing it is unknown how or what they worshipped. However, their chaotic and complex existence was changed for good when the Chakwa landed on their shores.

On Antipodea and the Chakwa

The Chakwa were, by contrast, a peaceful species of sentients descended from the grazing species of the continent of Antipodea. Antipodea is a large continent of open spaces and plains, with dense forests being rare and the dominant plantlife being the Fugri moss which spreads across the entire continent like a carpet. Many animals evolved in Antipodea to live off the Fugri, with the moss being high in nutritional value, and other animals evolved to eat those animals. The Chakwa were descended from the former species, and evolved into light, quadrupedal beings which could run fast along the plains of the continent. The Chakwa were capable of standing on two legs for long periods of time, though this was not preferred. Eventually, the Chakwa came to develop agriculture, tools, and a functional society, with a complex social structure and a system of ancestor worship. As the Chakwa spread out across Antipodea and established settlements, they developed black powder, and sporadic warfare continued in the manner of settled species across the galaxy.

However, the potential of the Chakwa was lost when they first landed in Equatoria. Initially, settlements were built on the coastlines without the Shagwa knowing of them, but as the settlements grew they became overpopulated and the settlers began exploring the inland of Equatoria, where they encountered the Shagwa. The Shagwa were very envious of the wealth and technology of the Chakwa, and responded in the only way their culture knew - by warfare. The smaller Chakwa were initially able to hold back and even expand against the Shagwa using their gunpowder weaponry. However, for every Shagwa victory they gained slaves, which they used to build gunpowder weaponry of their own and were able to operate it using their vestigial arms. The technological advantages of the Chakwa were lost, and they were swept up and enslaved by the Shagwa.

On The Enslavement of the Chakwa

Within two hundred years of the first contact between the species, all the Chakwa on Equatoria were enslaved. The Shagwa put them to work doing almost all the labour required of a society - the herding, building, farming, technological research and almost everything but hunting and fighting was done by Chakwa slaves. The Shagwa grew more and more devoted to martial pursuits, needing them to keep the vast Chakwa majority in line. The Chakwa were forced to raise great pyramid cities in the jungles of Equatoria for the Shagwa masters - the largest of which, Parko, is currently the centre of the Wa dominion. As the gleaming pyramid cities of the Shagwa rose from the jungle, still they demanded more and more slaves and power. Meanwhile, the naturally warlike Shagwa were growing overcrowded and overpopulated, being unused to such prosperity, and conflicts and internecine fighting was becoming too common. And so they grew jealous when they heard of the vast empires of Antipodea and the billions of Chakwa there to be potential slaves.

The Shagwa armed themselves for another war of conquest, with both their natural gifts for fighting and weapons designed for them by their slaves. For the first time in their history, all of the Shagwa came together for a great war of conquest against the Antipodeans. 600 years after the arrival of the Chakwa to Equatoria, the Shagwa landed on the coast of Antipodea to begin their war of conquest. However, the Chakwa knew of the fall of their brethren and had not been busy, and having heard of the oncoming great invasion force, had united as a species against the slavers and armed themselves for war.

The resulting Great Enslavement War was brutal and violent, lasting for a another 300 years. The Chakwa's gave no quarter, believing it better to die fighting than to be enslaved, while the Shagwa fought brutally and frequently enslaved whole cities and shipped them back to their Pyramid-cities or the new Pyramid-forts on the coast. As the war dragged on, going for generations, the Chakwa became desperate, and began detonating nuclear weapons on their own cities in order to spare them from enslavement. However, despite the immense casualties the Shagwa fought on, revelling in the wars and the bloodshed, and detonated nukes of their own, though they preferred to capture Chakwa alive for enslavement. Eventually the Chakwa were enslaved or annihilated, save for the last free settlements on the Protruding Islands to the east, a chain of small islands that spiralled out of a peninsula on Antipodea. When the Chakwa of the Protruding Islands heard that the Shagwa were coming, they nuked themselves, destroying their settlements as well as the oncoming Shagwa invasion fleet. The Shagwa ended their invasion there, believing the Chakwa to be all either dead or enslaved - technically incorrect, as small communities of free Chakwa still survive, if barely, on the rocky, glassed beaches of the Protruding Islands.

On The Empire of the Shagwa

Regardless, the Shagwa were now the dominant species on Wa. They named themselves the Shagwa, meaning 'Those who conquer the soil' and gave the Chakwa their name 'Those who serve the soil', stemming from their belief that the Chakwa were in fact worshippers and servants of the soil and mistaking agriculture for a religious ritual. The Shagwa had created an entire species of slaves, spreading out along their captured territory and Equatoria and building the first great Shagwa civilisation. The Chakwa continued to do all the tasks for them, while the Shagwa become more and more skilled in war as time went on to maintain their control over their gigantic slave underclass - there were nearly a hundred Chakwa to ever single Shagwa, and each owned an average this - owning Chakwa was not a sign of prestige, but a standard thing in Shagwa Empire

However, Shagwa are not suited for peace. Eventually, their warlike nature manifested itself, and the Pyramid cities of Wa went to war with each other once more. The resulting Great Nuclear War was brutal and vicious, and killed billions of Chakwa and Shagwa alike. There were no sides - it was merely a nuclear free for all between cities, with even the cities themselves being wracked with civil war as the Shagwa practiced their ancient way of choosing leaders - unannounced, brutal combat. The Great Nuclear Wars did not end in a peace treaty or conquest - merely, the Shagwa settled down with the end of the overpopulation.

However, the Great Nuclear War had a devastating effect on the Shagwa Empire. The Chakwa slaves, who the Shagwa depended upon for literally everything, had become unbreakable. Many had become infertile due to the high background radiation (which barely affected the Shagwa), and it would take almost twelve generations for the breeding stock to recover. However, in three generations without slaves the Shagwa would collapse, and their luxurious lifestyles of doing nought but fight would be destroyed. Desperate for a solution, the Shagwa arm themselves aboard the Chakwa-built spaceships, searching for a solution. Indeed, they find it - a galaxy full of alien species, all of which are easy to enslave. The galaxy is the Shakwa's oyster, and they intend to devour it.

Welcome Grandkhan! Just a little piece of trivia, Nept also evolved 2 sentient species, the Qii and the Kasekral, who now are both part of the Collectivity of Sanath. 3 sentients are native to Nept, but the Niitha were uplifted by the Qii. Like Wa, it's also a giant terrestrial planet... only in yours, the brutal, warlike species won the planet-ruining nuclear war. Interesting, how these things parallel themselves.

I like the idea of the dominant sentient species lacking effective manipulator arms- it really does put slavery in a different context. Without slaves, that Shagwa are horribly handicapped- as you noted, having slaves isn't a status symbol. It's as necessary to their society as a human having hands.

Wa is located in the system closest to the Heavenly State of the Phaska. It can be found just down and to the right, or 'rimwards and spinwards (clockwise)', to use more proper directional terminology.

I'm very excited to have you aboard, and I am sure that your neighbours are excited to have you around now too. ;)

Point the n-dimensional hedron. Despite the continued advances in transcendence software and personal cloning rehabilitation, technological stagnation appears to have been formalized. Point the sphere. Psychosocial stagnation and the loss of our mission-belief follows thereafter.

Point the pyramid. During the periods in which CMC mandated supra-maintenance military construction was policy, concurrent advances in materials and transcendent sciences outpaced our present breakthrough rates. Point the sphere. Our vaunted techno-pacifism is safeguarded by regrettable military endeavors.

It is not Rou to return to those dark times, and I stand against the policies of propaganda and conscription which bookended them! Nonetheless, a response must be dictated to this aggression. But my families counsel against anything beyond it.

Fellow trumpet-bearers of the heavenly cause, the Entombed Saint remains active within its stasis programs. We are confident to a likelihood of seventy-nine eightyparts that it will not collapse into psychosis or otherwise antiproductive behaviors if activated.

Point the point. Then we are agreed.

For the time being, Councillor.

Do I get to press the button?

...no. There isn't a single button, is there?

Point the line. There is technically speaking a button. Councillor Nree, if you must.

Eeeeee!

Cue Chee saying something really badass as he 'wakes up'.

Alternatively something that is the opposite of badass, which only makes his badassitude stand out even more. :D

"this is an intriguing concept.. their language is not one of light.. but of sound."
"and they have built this complex civilization and these amazing devices via such crude means of communication?"
"It's not crude in the least.. while it takes a bit longer, they can express just as much as we can via light."
"true?"
"true. Luckily, it turns out they do have some sort of visual means of communication, called 'writing' . preliminary tests to establish a rapport with them has started, but learning how to speak this writing of theirs is tricky. it's much bulkier then our own, and requires several jubbla together to spell out a simple word. it might be a while before we succeed. perhaps efforts on other worlds might speed up the learning.."
"I see. I'll pass your word onto the council during the next report."
"

Hee hee.

I suddenly pictured a bunch of big, round shiny insects posing in the shapes of letters, or hovering around in legible shapes... a small cloud reading 'HELO FREIND'.

Guh... there is more than one mutli-species planet? I should probably fix that. And possibly start reading the updates.

Yeah, as it goes on you'll see that the Shagwa are more than just unable to build an industrial society. Slavery is necessary but simultaneously screwing them over. I kind of want to create the logical extension of a Spartan society, I think it'd be interesting to take a look at.

Which species lives in the Phaska Heavenly State? I can't find the Phaska in the species list. Similarly, whats the dominant species in the Galactic Republic (and its splinter states) and the Zan Malawi? I'm guessing that they're the Zan, but I want to make sure since the species list says that they're dying (?)

New Nation: The Dominion of the Shagwa, Part 2

The Society of the Planet of Wa

On the Pyramid Cities of the Shagwa

The Shagwa evolved as an arboreal species, though capable of terrestrial movement - the primary use of their vestigial arms was to cling to tree branches that dominate the skyline of their native Equatoria. As such, their original cities were built as conglomerations of tall towers, with cables, bridges, and bars linking tower to tower at various places to enable the Shagwa to transit between them fast.

However, as the Chakwa became predominant within the cities as slaves, it was found that the towers were inefficient. The Chakwa had evolved on a continent which was largely flat from a species of savannah dwelling grazing animals, and could not handle the narrow bridges and heights of the tower cities. Due to the necessity of efficient transit for the slaves, the Shagwa came to the conclusion that another shape was necessary, and came to a compromise - pyramids.

The great pyramid cities of the Shagwa are composed of hundreds of burnished steel stepped pyramids, which rise from the earth like mountains. Near their base, they are connected with wide bridges and passageways for the Chakwa, while the upper echelons are linked to each other by the cables and narrow bars so beloved by the Shagwa. Never ones to waste good space, the pyramids are generally hollow and filled almost to the peak with the necessities of the Wa civilisation - factories, living quarters, stores, and warehouses are all found within the cramped quarters of a single pyramid. Many Chakwa go their entire lives without ever seeing sunlight, spending their entire existence working away within the bowels of several great pyramids.

Atop the pyramids are the homes of the Shagwa slave masters. Though they frequently go inside to oversee or control their slaves, the Shagwa tend to live their lives in the airy tops of the Pyramid Cities. The upper reaches typically have the living quarters - which tend to be large and open-plan - and training grounds of the Shagwa warriors, as well as the communal hatcheries for each tribe.

On the Tribes and Cities of the Shagwa

Until relatively recently, each city operated as an independent state. However, the cities themselves are run by a conglomeration of the Shagwa tribes. Each tribe (roughly 3000 Shagwa and their attendant slaves) owns three or four pyramids and their attendant slaves and staff, with approximately twenty tribes in a particular city.

Tribes are lead by three or four Akrah (lit. old ones), the elders of a tribe. Since the Shagwa typically lead short, brutal lives that are extinguished on the battlefield, those who survive past fifty (relatively old for a Shagwa) are typically the greatest warriors and fighters in the tribe. As Shagwa do not suffer from old age (the oldest on record is almost 1100 years old, and is currently a grand leader in the Pyramid City of Parko, though we will get to him later) and continue to grow as time goes on, the Akrah are normally the fourth largest Shagwa in the tribe. Appointment to the Akrah Council is done by challenging a current Akrah to a battle and killing him - the victor is accorded the defeated's seat. Typically, the Akrah's positions do not change much until one meets an untimely end from a projectile weapon - the Akrah being the most powerful and largest warriors in a tribe. These elders manage the day to day functioning of the tribe - the management of the slaves and the production quotas, as well as inter-tribal discussions and, if necessary, the conduct of warfare.

One of their most important duties, however, is the education and management of the Shagwa youth of the tribe. The young are collectively trained in creches by the Akrah and other specialised warriors - for the Shagwa, teaching the young the ways of warfare and battle is one of the most noble and important pursuits a warrior can engage in, since it allows them to retain their hegemony over their slaves. Shagwa are trained and equipped by their most powerful warriors, who frequently take time off of battle to return to train a new creche of young Shagwa. In fact, there have been cases of the greatest Shagwa warriors leaving the battlefield to return to the Pyramid cities to educate, leading to the loss of a battle - the Shagwa are playing the long game in regards to keeping their subject species in line, and every Shagwa must be a fighting and killing machine first and foremost.

Each tribe in a city sends a representative to the Akrah Koh (Council of the Old Ones). The Akrah Koh mainly concern themselves with the intertribal arbitrations, as well as warfare between the other cities and intercity trade. The Akrah Koh can theoretically override the decisions made by the Akrah of a tribe, but in practice any clashes tend to be solved by either a ritualistic duel, or more commonly, civil war.

A Shagwa's personal loyalty is always to himself first, then the tribe, then the city. This is illustrated by their names; for example, there was once a warrior named Sha Rahkir ro Kehru - Sha being their personal name, Rahkir (lit. 'dactyl' - all tribes are named after their totemic animal) being the name of their tribe, and 'ro Kehru' meaning 'of the city of Kehru. Civil wars within a city are frequent and not considered unusual. Generally, the victors establish their own majority in the Akrah Koh for a generation or two until they are either defeated in yet another civil war or are edged out of power by subtle machinations. It is not uncommon for tribes to switch sides mid-battle in a stab for further power within the city after victory. Indeed, one of the bloodiest single battles of the Great Nuclear War occurred when the city of Kehru was besieged by the warriors of Gashar. Dismayed by the lack of power that they had within the city, the Rahkir tribe declared for the Gashar and and attacked the defenders from within. The resulting battle lasted for almost six months as the Gashar were forced to liquidate Kehru's forces from each and every pyramid as they fought on from the bowels and the peaks. However, on the conclusion of the brutal battles the Gashar forces attacked the Rahkir and massacred them, being unwilling to hand over power in the newly conquered cities. Such internecine fighting was common among the Shagwa until relatively recently.

The Phaska are a newish creation by merciary. Essentially a rodent-like species who invented a literal Heaven to enforce social control, through postmortem mind uploading. Here is the introductory post, and here is a story. The Galactic Republic is dominated by Lauki (non-hiving insectoids, who have been heavily bioengineered), Fudirunin (spiky pink balls of fuzz with a gestalt intlligence called 'Nidkubra'), Cherwels (hexapodal, snake-like arboreal lizards who the rather reserved Lauki find to be excessively friendly) and Verthommes (plantlike sentients). They also have a small, but still significant population of Ulla (adventurous, philosophical pseudo-amphibians who have an immense respect for the philosophy of 'Rou', which can be likened to a proper flow of events), Branigan (gung-ho reptilian commandos), Kurkrav (dextrous and technologically proficient knobbly insectoids), Navartines (sturdy amphibious hexapod depressives who worshipped a god who is synonymous with their homeworld, until the Zan destroyed their deity), and an exceedingly tiny sampling of the Sanathi species, the Qii (pacifistic amphibians who have a geometry-based religion), Kasekral (armoured, honour-bound warrior clans) and Nitha (religiously fervent, Qii-uplifted simians). The Republic also has a single Choon (massive gas giant-born interstellar nomad) named the Dreamer, and strictly-controlled populations of lobotomized Maus (sentient fruiting trees with neural root networks who once controlled Lauki with pheromones) and Dendro (distant cousins of the Maus).

Yeah, the Galactic Republic is pretty diverse, and their homeworld of Garv'n is an ecumenopolis.

Zan Malwai is a Zan, an ancient mechanically-sustained entity with a god complex. It's just one individual, and a horde of robotic servitors. There aren't many of them, but each one is immensely powerful.

Anyway, I'm really intrigued by your civilization. I'm noting that species on Wa don't age, and reproduce asexually (and perhaps even clonally)- both of these things are associated with slow evolution and limited adaptability, which implies that Wa is an extremely stable homeworld where reproductive efficiency may be more important than genetic diversity.

Sure!

The Lumos Fringe is probably the best place to start, being near to a few other starting players. The Spinward Frontier is a nice spot, but your only neighbour would be a powerful NPC with expansionist tendencies who's just emerged, heavily armed, out of a brutal civil war. The Outer Arm is a bit more placid and open for freeform storytelling, but your only nearby PC neighbour, for now, is Tuxedohamm's Ksspopok. Finally, the Coreward Reach would start you in between Zan Kena's home systems, several massive incoming Zan Armadas, the Fleet of the Migrant Hammenammir, and a bunch of weird aliens that have apparently done unspeakably terrible things to a few wayward Fehan explorers.

Pick your poison! ;)
