Ghandi and his many hordes (Let's play!)

ding ding

oh..ok...route to mode...it didn't really register to me what you were referring to and I never use that option

Yeah buddy!! I used to never trade with the AI at all, but this opened my eyes entirely! I'm researching HBR while getting all the back cheap techs so I can still get HA's out as SOON as HBR is done..

I'm also saving in ~10 turn increments so you can see what I did over the course of a couple saves, and if need be I can go back and change some stuff out :D

Alright, so I know I played on in this one.. but I have all the saves in between, because I am certain I will need to go back and redo something..

I took out both GK and Zara by 25AD.. I'm going to assume this is really bad.. Timing is off it looks like.. But I have a ton of horseman just pouring out of all of the cities.

My question to you is, when I grab a city from the AI, what should be the first thing you build? I usually go monument or granary I guess for border/growth opportunities? (this is probably where I mess up a bit)

Zara had a few sword/axe/spearmen that gave me a little trouble, but not enough trouble that I lost but just a few units to bad rolls.

Also, tried to get that city where he was working Ivory, and when I attacked it and killed the defenders there it auto-sacked the city and never gave me a chance to actually take it over. So not sure what happened there. I did lose my warlord in the middle of the Ethiopia battle, but I still came out in the end.

So now what I am going to do is attach a bunch of save files to see where I can improve. I just wanted to see if I could take out GK and Zara and how long it took me on my own.. I am GOING to go back and reload an earlier save to see what I can do better to learn from those mistakes.. I only played on because I wanted to take out Zara as well :D

With that being said, the saves are as follows:
T71 - started HBR/trading for smaller techs
T76 - right before I get HBR
T80 - right before I declared on GK
T97 - GK is dead at 450BC
T116 - Zara dead at 25AD

I know the timing is off, I'm not worried about going back and relearning and redoing the games. I just wanted to see how long it would take me to take both of them out compared to you.

It depends on what the city needs first. Usually in the early wars, the AI hasn't done a good job developing the city, and it has a small population already so you want to get the granary up as soon as possible.

I go for culture mainly if your pushing at the border of an AI that you aren't about to kill, or if there is a high priority resource (sometimes this is food) in the second ring. Especially in the early wars, you often just want to raze the city as the AI settled in a place that wasn't good and you lose more than you get out of the city for a long time.

Always check the city for what buildings it has. Even a junk city in the desert is probably worth keeping if AI managed somehow to build a wonder like the mausoleum of maussalos. If it's a city that kept a lot of buildings, its often worth it to keep, especially if it kept the mote expensive ones like courthouse or forge.

Also, tried to get that city where he was working Ivory, and when I attacked it and killed the defenders there it auto-sacked the city and never gave me a chance to actually take it over. So not sure what happened there.

With default settings, this happens when the city has never been size 2 - it will auto raze. So if the city is size 2 or bigger, this cannot happen. You also get the option to keep the city if it has been size 2 at some point in its history, but is size 1 when you take it, for example after the AI whipped a defender.

If you choose "No city razing" option in settings when setting up the game, you get to keep all cities. However, this also takes away the possibility to raze poorly placed cities, so there are pros and cons.

Not bad at all.. However, when I said guide you I meant guide you through the process. Generally, the best way for this to work is to post a save and get some advice and guidance before playing. That is what I had in mind here. Still, sounds like you did fine with GK this time.

I wanted to talk about some tactics with HAs as you progressed as well as look at your cities as you are setting up whips and chops.

As for Zara, I snuck a couple of HAs past his borders before attacking and sniped his Iron on the first turn of the war. In the meantime, Phant city had grown to size 2. A city will auto-raze if it has never reached size 2. This goes for barbs cities as well.

Also, try to gauge the # of HAs you need and maybe stop building them if you have enough to take out your targets, unless you plan on taking on someone else. I guess there may be some barb cities worth taking as well, but don't keep them if they are crap.

The need for a monument is generally based entirely on what the a city needs. For cities you settle your self, you are generally going to settle with resources...at least food..in the first ring. If so, I will start with the granary and maybe avoid the monument altogether if the city is fine without and instead build a library, if suited for the city, or just wait for a religion to pop up there.

In captured cities, the AI doesn't always settle like the human does so you may need some quick culture. If the city has some pop, you can one pop a monument or chop it. If it has a lot of pop, you can maybe 3pop a library. I try to get the granary first though if it does not have one.

Yeah it took 24 total turns from T63 to T97 to take out GK. I think what happened was I didn't whip any HA's and spent time walking my HA's from GK area down to Zara. I should have probably moved a couple down there already so that I could take him on as SOON as i declared.

I think I'm ok with the killing of GK.. But I am not happy with how I handled Zara.. I felt like I didn't know what to do with my workers, build cottages? Farms? Keep chopping? I think that is another weak point.. what do I do with them? Is it plausible to cottage up every tile in a non watered city to make it a commerce city? Should I build farms all over a FP area to get that food popping?

I might redo the whole thing back from T63, but I believe when I declared on GK I was right on point with your save (looking at your combat log anyways)

If I did my math correctly:
875BC - 650BC - you killed GK which is about 10 turns - 40 years per turn from 1000BC to 500AD
450BC - 325BC - you killed Zara which is about 5 turns - 40 years per turn from 1000BC to 500AD

875BC - 450BC - I killed GK which is about 17 turns - 40 years per turn from 1000BC to 500AD
450BC - 1AD - I killed Zara which is about 18 turns - 40 years per turn from 1000BC to 500AD

I think I did that math correctly, please correct me if I am wrong. So yeah, my timing is definitely off.

@TheCox - don't worry so much about comparing your time against Lymonds. From what I have read in this thread so far, you are making significant improvements in you understanding of the game. Remember baby steps. Take it a little at a time. You have learned much, and seem to by doing well with the guidance from Lymond and others. To use the expression "Rome wasn't built in a day". You still have much to learn but are off to a great start. Build upon this games experience and continue to seek advice from forum members.

^^^exactly...my save was just to use as a guide..nothing more..you will get there

@Pangaea - ha...you know, I've made attempts at doing more LPS..even bought a different recording software, but just never got around to it. I've always wanted to do some short guide type videos. Maybe I still will..just in time for no one to care anymore..ha LPs can be fun but are not easy

@Lymond- I've never viewed any of your LP's but will certainly look into it. Being a Prince / Monarch lvl player, I'm always willing to enjoy the efforts of higher lvl players. The bat/bug mods have helped me with my micromanagement. Soon to be testing myself with some emperor lvl games.

Well technically.. Rome COULD be built in a day :D hahahaha

Yeah, no from where I started like 2 weeks ago.. definitely have seen some improvements on how to work the tiles, etc..

Yeah, when I look at guides, I usually use them exactly like that, as a guide.. should never be done exactly turn for turn.. But studying the guide helps me to learn where I made my mistakes since you are at a much higher level than I am.

Here is my T116 save after killing off Zara and GK. We will go with this one instead of rerolling and go from there so that we can assess and see where to go from here since we are now in 25AD.

I think I also have way too many HA's.. but I'm probably wrong and need to start mixing in Axemen so I can take down those spearmen that the other civ's are using.

@TheCox- considering that you started this game/thread as a means to learn, you might want to hold back on further wars, using this as an opportunity to learn how to rebuild and stabilize your economy post war. You have reached a good point in this game, but risk having your economy stall as the remaining Ai will outpace you tech wise. There are many necessary lessons in civ4. Building cities, worker management, building armies and fighting wars, and recovering from those wars so you can stay competitive with the other Ai. Additional advice can you put in a position to build a strong empire, ready at the right time to make war later in the game. From my point of view this would make a great tutorial to you in doing what we on the forum call a "rifle / cuirs" breakout. Begin the game by building a small empire. Add to your empire with a war or two against nearby Ai. Then rebuild your economy till you reach specific military techs to begin the final set of wars to complete the game with either a domination or conquest victory.

Oh yeah for sure.. I was thinking the axemen in case they declared on me and I could defend myself.. But I think you are totally correct.

My next assumption is, how do I rebuild my economy from here and get everyone back to being happy. Stop building military units for one. I think I have enough to keep myself defended for a little while, and then start teching up and rebuilding the empire, improving borders, expanding again, etc..

With that being said, I think I will settle where that city was supposed to be in the south so I can get that Ivory, then maybe trade it off to get some other techs while rebuilding my economy.

What do I set myself to building now? Wealth, research? Walls? This is definitely the best point in the game to learn how to recover from war =)

@cfc..ha..well that full LP I did was some years ago. It was on IMM, but I think I went for late Space on that one and Space has never been my strong VC. Regardless, I was not near they player then...not that I'm of much count now

I agree with CFC, Cox, in that maybe you can focus more on research and economy...stabilizing your empire. You might look to use the existing HAs to take out some barb cities and just gain some experience, but save them for Curs later..then go killin' again.

I look at things more closely here soon.

I don't think you have to worry about defense against AIs until something happens, which I doubt. You will no when they go into war mode by the fist. One Axeman may be nice to fend off any barb spearman though for now. There is a ton of open land around you ..kinda odd for pangaea..almost seems like a large map or maybe you have it set to low sea level.

Walls are always a last resort building..never build them.

I'll give you more details on where to go from here after looking at the save a while.

Nah you guys are fine. I work from home so I have plenty of time to sit and reflect in between working of course lol.. I'm just enjoying the community here that actually sits down with you and plays with you and teaches you even if you a scrub to a veteran.

Really glad I found this group.

Well, you haven't seen us ask for money yet and your unborn children :satan:

Whew ..where to start?

Okay, we have to have a talk about Great People. Great People are very important, and you shoulda at least popped a couple by now. Gandhi is Philosophical which boots GPP rate - it's one of the best traits in the game.

If a strong Capital, I usually drop an Academy there with the first GS and then start looking at at bulb strategies like Education>Lib. You want to be running scientists in most cities that can do it, basically grow into them if there are no improvements. Delhi should have been running them regardless.

You can soon run Caste System which will let you run more scientists where you can to speed that up further. Note that Golden Age further boost GPP rate, in addition to boosting commerce, production and culture. It also allows for no anarchy civic changes, but that doesn't matter as Gandhi since he has the spiritual trait.

No Markets, please

Any city with decent food and the basic requirements like granary should have a library at this point and running specs if they can or grow into them.

No cottages in some of those cities that don't need them ..don't just build cottages every where. Delhi will get them on any flat tile that it can work and Bombay can help work them. Once Civil Service is in and you switch to Bureau, Delhi will start to take on more cottages..huge research and gold boost.

Ofc, stop with the HAs for now. By the way, you should turn off auto-unit production. It is a BUG feature. Go to BUG options (green bug button) and to the "City Screen" tab. At the far bottom right you can uncheck the obvious check box.

(Note: Again, I really would have liked to have worked with you on optimizing unit production with whipping and chopping. You did fine, but I'd like to see you do it more judicially and just learn better how to manage it )

OH MY..OPen borders man. Generally, open borders with everyone unless you notice someone is generally hated. Look at some of your advisor screens and note the details. Learn how to read them. Open Borders builds relations and let you get Foreign Trade Routes which are hugely important. Right now probably the best way is via sea routes but right now it is block by fog. I would have your Conf Mish or an HA scout out Gilgamess and see if you can start getting those foreign trade routes active.

A scout work boat out of Askum sent E may open some up that way to like with Babylon.

RUnning a Religion, especially one no one else is, is not a very good idea. You are doing your self no favors right now diplo wise. AIs won't trade techs with you or open borders. Be aware of diplomacy..it is very important. Also, note that AIs Leaders view other AI leaders differently, as well as the Human leader. This is based of coding and various factors like Peaceweights. It will take time for you to learn this, but just start being aware that some leaders are harder to get along with and build relations than others.

Toku is the worse diplo wise. He will flat not open borders with you when you first meet him. You have to get him to Please. If you have Alpha and just meet him, you can get him to please by gifting him any small tech which give +4 diplo instantly. Now it will take some time.

Note other ways to build diplo. Trading resources, which you should always do if you have spare ones for resources you don't have or gold, give positive diplo over time. Sometimes I trade resources even if I have only one copy depending on my empire needs at the time. For instance, if you have the Expansive trait, you may not need a certain health resource for some time, so trade it away for a happy resource, or gold, or..heck..I even gift them away early if nothing available just to start that diplo process.

Probably need to complete the road to Aksum since I think trade route may be blocked..not sure.

I like next city next to the Gems south of Bombay. It can share the clams and has cow and rice as well. Good city and gives you another happy resource. Vijay is very unhappy so we can whip settlers out of there. Put 2 turns into a settler in Vijay and then 3 pop whip that sucker..settle 1W of Gems.

YOU DO need to start putting MP in you cities. Vijay has no one. Start moving your little spawnbusters into cities. HAs can start busting areas and keeping you safe. Not sure why you built Archers though, although they do become cheap MP later after you can't build warriors, but you don't even have them in cities.

HAs can mainly serve the purpose of scouting out the remaining land, busting those large dark areas, and maybe taking out the 2 barbs cites to the SW - not sure if you will keep them or no..maybe if they have nice stuff.

Not sure about Ivory city. It is nice to have the Ivory for happiness, but don't really like the old city spot. Not that great of a city and no food. Maybe one E of there to take that clam too for some food. Looks like barb city claims one and well you don't have to have them all.

You may need one or two more workers that you can two pop out of an unhappy city. (By the way, Note that unless in an emergency, you should never whip anything on turn 0 of building that item. There is a large production penalty for doing so. Just wanted to make sure you no that.

Anyway, right now I see:

1) you focusing on research...Get to CS..Switch to Bureau. ACtually switch to Caste System here in a few turns to run more scientists..also you can run an artist to pop borders.

2) Agra - Workboat please..facepalm

3) Maybe grab a couple more spots I mentioned. Your economy is okay, but you really need to get some foreign trade routes up soon

4) No state religion. Trade Myst to Toku for his gold and Writing to Gilgs for his. Start looking at boosting relation. You can't trade resources until you open the fog for connections. You could build a road to Gilgs, but I think that is unnecessary. Just unfog that coast.
(note: fog on coast will block trade connections)

5) Too bad you did not settle Varanasi one SW. just better spot overall and picks up a couple of resources, including a happy you don't have .. Start to think about this. Even this city can tag team Delhi to work cottages.

6) Continuing grooming Delhi for Bureacracy

7) Stop building useless improvements like those cottages in some cities. That is just wasted worker turns. There are tons of things for your workers to do that are important.

8) I see teching CS>Paper>Education, but probably part bulb Education. You could make a detour to Metal Casting after CS though since AIs will be slow to it on Prince. Granaries and Forges are the most important buildings. Everything else is very situational, and most things are just ..well..not necessary or crap...at least early. Things like Markets are VERY expensive early for little payoff.

9) If a city has the basic stuff it needs for that city..granary, forge, Lighthouse (if needed) and Library (if suitable..i.e., food and commerce), then build wealth.

I would really like to see your game in ..say..just a few turns just to see how you work some things out during that time and gauge your diplo situation. Let's take it no more that 5 turns at a time in the short term.

(Holy Tolstoy! Did I really just write all that...)

Holy crap.. that's a lot to read and understand haha.. I'm going to do 5 turns only save, then put the save here and then no more until we talk further haha.. I just get so wrapped up in the game that it's hard to not just do one more turn lol.

I don't even know where to start.. so I guess let's start at the beginning. BTW YES I hate that auto unit production crap.. I had no idea where to turn it off lol

1.) How do you build scientists?
2.) What is MP? You keep mentioning that Vijay has none? (I tried racking by brain to think of what you could be using that acronym for)
3.) Don't think Aksum is blocked as I see roads coming to it from two different tiles.
4.) Changed religion to none
5.) Trading Toku and Gilgs for their religion
6.) How do you groom for bureaucracy?
7.) But I like my useless cottages :( alright, alright, I will stop building useless crap

Stopped all horseman training as I can, if not I will build the other buildings as needed. I got agra and aksum working work boats.

I think that's it? I will do 5 turns, save it and repost.

Edit: Gilgs will not give me gold for my writing unless I through in HBR as well. Same with Toku, unless I give him myst and math
Edit2: What the heck.. I put in myst first and then asked what do you want for it and he gave it to me.. but I tried to put in gold first then myst and he wouldnt take it.. silly AI
Edit3: Annnd.. .I'm also the worst enemy of everyone.. lol

So I'm probably going to have to redo these 7 turns, I didn't put any MP(still not sure what this is or scientists into play)

I did change out the auto build, settler 1W of gems, two barb cities and traded toku and gilgs for their gold.

I forgot to watch the research slider as it dropped to 30% on me.. how can I turn that off so that it doesn't auto do that to me? I'm still not done with CS yet because I didn't pay attention to it. But here's the save, let's dissect it and go from there =D

If I need to replay the 7 turns, so be it, no problem with that. Also what DO I do with the workers when I can't think of anything to do with them? Right now I have just been chopping trees to get the granaries/libraries going. I'm sure that's wrong though.
