Say the population of the south of Italy has probably grown slower than the average Italian population growth rate and the north has grown faster.

Perhaps it helps to imagine yourself back in 1500
Where does the music play ?
What dreams, objectives, fears do the mighty and the little people have ?
How much was influenced by the little people... how much by the mighty ?
How do they pursue them and change the world in which they live to get them ?
What are your first priorities of life ?
 
Maybe it's some sort of sickness average ?
 
so is it like the relative decrease or increase in the thing since 1500?
 
not terribly eager to read the article, I've got too admit, and I kinda can't think about how city walls relate to the map

No need to read the whole article.
I posted it to show how important town walls were for late medieval and early modern period people
That map shows something also important in that time
