Can't be Communism. Otherwise, China would be red.

My guess is countries in some chess tournament.

Else, a hint might be nice!

A map that uses the marking color red and includes the former SU seems to do a good job in limiting peoples thought-patterns

Well, the map does look almost identical to the Warsaw Pact.

Countries that have had Communist parties with Marxist ideology?

Since 1974 Portugal has about half the time ruled by a Socialist government. The Communist party and the Left Block are also still very influential.

Besides, North Korea and China aren't in red while Cuba is.

China and North Korea are Maoist and Stalinist respectively though. I reckon its something to do with Communist ideology, hence the guess above.

Another crazy guess (hey, the last one worked):

Countries visited by Khrushchev (or Brezhnev?) while they were in charge.

Countries owned by the USSR in C&C: Red Alert?

Countries the USSR had troops in at one point, or fought a proxy war in? (Can't figure out about France/Spain being red and Romania not being red, though...)

Although that's wrong, it's quite close to the actual answer.

By the way, if you were right, Spain would still be red, as the USSR intervened in the Spanish Civil War.

Countries that the USSR sold military equipment to.

EDIT: Never mind, the PRK had MiGs.

Countries that received USSR monetary support?
