Yes, my girlfriend is actually pretty short. My sister even commented "Wow she's so small!" when she first saw her.

Is she 1.58cm by any chance?

Emphasis on "eccentric". Non-white people are perfectly capable of coming up with their own secessionist movements, even ones that appear somewhat bizarre, but they tend to be responses to immediate political concerns. Somaliland became independent almost by accident, for example, as the central government in Mogadishu collapsed and the Northern regions were left to themselves. The process of simply inventing countries and then spending decades trying to convince the world to catch up with your imagination seems to be pretty much unique to the pastier parts of the globe.

Noted. Still no less eccentric than Cascadia nevertheless.

I suddenly remembered that as the second-tallest person in my family (my favorite cousin is a half inch taller than me) whenever we meet (Asian) family and friends, 99% of the time they'll make a reference to Yao Ming. I have no idea why. No, well, I do, but it does make me chuckle a bit. My brother is about 5'9" but that's still pretty tall for an Asian so he'll have people saying how tall he is... if they haven't met me, yet. Then my bro is short(er) again.

I've been to / am at schools with large Asian populations, and they don't seem to be taller or shorter than anyone else. I admit that I don't really notice height that much, unless someone is really short or really tall.

I think from my experience generally Asians are shorter than non-Asians on average, but it's not too bad a difference.

Also I think there's a lot of variation amongst different generations, as well as how much time one spent in a Western country, which probably explains why older relatives/family friends are so shocked by my height, as my parents' generation are noticeably shorter than mine. My dad is only 5'7" or something, and he is considered rather tall for his generation, which as a whole was on average taller than my grandparents' generation; that said, my grandfather was 5'10" so he was probably the tallest man in Vietnam for all I know, and boy did he tower over everyone in his generation.

All in all I do feel gigantic around my parents and grandparents' generation, my generation not as much. Only exception was probably my grandfather. When my father went back to Vietnam for business reasons, he said people around my age were more or less the same as Asians back here - taller than the older generations.

Was just guessing at bf%, but had it measured with an electric impedance machine over the weekend which put me at 6.9%.

I hear bad things about the accuracy of calculating bodyfat percent based on biometric impedance. Displacement measurment is the best because you are directly measuring your density and you can reasonably calculate your bodyfat percentage from your density.

%BF = 495/d - 450

After that skinfold measurment is generally accepted to be within 2 percentage points, so if I am at 17%, it could be anywhere from 15% to 19%. This is just what I have heard - and you probably know more about the subject than I do.

That being said - at 6.9% you probably look like an anatomy chart.

Yeah, I'm not putting much faith in the accuracy of impedance measurement, but the machine I used had four electrodes (hands + feet) plus you punch in age/sex, so I'm expecting to be at least no worse than my previous method of looking at some photos and estimating my BF% based on how I look compared to them.

Too hairy. :p

I might not be Callista Flockhart, but I'm pretty bony for my 8 stone something. :)

18 dm, 77 kg, 10% bf, 120 systolic, 60 diastolic, 50 bpm resting.

I am guessing your neck is 15in (38cm) and your waist is 30in. (76cm) The military forumula I quoted on another thread would put your bf% at 8.3%.

Happens a lot with the more cushy aspects of wealth and modernity kicking in.

There's European conscription height data at least for males back into the 19th c. Back then the Dutch were the shortest people in Europe. Today they are the tallest, on average, 183 cm, 6'0.T

The Swedish average height only cleared 170 cm, 5'8, around 1890. Today it's 181,5 cm, 5'11,5. Perhaps even more stunning, back in the 1890's, a full 15% of Swedish 21 year old males were recognised as still growing, not having reached full adult height, and thus not yet out of a very late and delayed puberty. Add to it that the 1907 recorded Swedish life expectency was merely 57 years. All of those things were clearly linked to the effects of relative poverty.

173 cm, 88 kg.

To my consternation I find the BMI malarky pegs me as technically borderline obese. I run, I ride, I'm next to vegetarian, with a 33 inch waist, and a resting pulse of 54...

There's a bit of padding, and I could be in better shape than this clearly, with a 32 inch waist (resting pulse below 50 is possible), and if I really struggle, I probably can still get myself down below 80 kg. But my supposed "normal" BMI only kicks in at 75 kg, and for that to happen, I probably need to actually starve myself.

183 cm and 88.5 kg. The weight has been coming down as I'm eating less carbs and sugars. 84 kg was my weight from my teens to my 40's but firmer. Lol
