From another thread:

Overall off topic is stingy with likes and no one considers a debate winner by the like tally. Nice to get them ofc.

I'm super generous with likes. But yeah, the love is not usually reciprocated but I don't take that personally.

I try to be generous with them but not too generous.

I use them when a post makes me smile, or think "That's good. I like it." Or when a well-written post tells me something that I didn't already know.

For myself, I'm a little like Borachio. I tend to reward humorous and incisive (especially one-sentence) encapsulations of an issue.

Assorted reasons, most already mentioned...but since I don't use the usual social media where likes are standard stock in trade it seldom crosses my mind so I don't hand out many.

I do have the unusual reason; that I use them to acknowledge the end of a dispute.

When I find myself compelled to hit the like button, and then if that compulsion is not dispelled before I get to the end of a post.

I don't click "like" unless I genuinely like the post. So anytime you see my name down there, know that it's sincere and not meant in any mocking way.

This used to be a nicer site, for the most part.

It is a vague mixture of motives I can't pin-down.
Posts that hit me in some, postive, way, is the most common motive. That can be a great formulation of something I care about, it can be insightfulness, it can be wittiness or snarkiness,
More rarely I also like to just approve.
Even more rarely I am influenced by some social motive. For instance I was rough to someone and want to show I can also value their contributions, received likes can also play a role, but a small one.

I'm not sure that I agree with this, although perhaps I am biased since I was a literal child in the "used to be" time period.

Anyways, I only "passive-aggressively mock" posts that specifically attempt to insult me. Simply ignoring it is the wisest choice but I like to have fun sometimes. It's probably closer to "posts I think are funny" than actual mocking since I don't escalate beyond 'liking' the post.

Anything that is common sense or funny. So rarely.

Only kidding, there are many solid posters on this forum.

My "likes" are mostly a "thank you for posting that".

- If I think a post is particularly well-written, or expresses a point well
- If I think a post is insightful or prompts me to think about something in a new way
- If I'm trying to stoke a petty cliqueish divides and bring you all down to my level
