How to get a job (or not)

I finished my statement today, its just 1 and a half page so not too much since 2 pages were provided.

I will get it looked over by my job advisor next week before sending it in. I meet all the required criteria and its written brilliantly so I should at least get an interview.

Oh god what hecticness ...

Work 11-5 pm non, weds, Thurs ... Job agency stuff Tues and Fri.

*Le wild job agency job finding lady appears ...

'Oh by the way we've got some open days for admin type work with [a funeral director] tonight at 6 pm, and tomorrow with the logistics department of Marks and Spencer up to 9 pm ..... it should be ok to just pop down after your shift.'

Thank you. These legs and feet that have not been used for an age are now dead. Wheelchair plox.

Though the funeral director open day was interesting ... Not somewhere I would have ever thought of working, least not for an admin role ... But interesting .... (that is try to get the job, and as soon as another one ever comes along ... TOODLES!).

...

I hope they don't visit Civfanatics and read my posts.

I meant that I hope they don't read that I only want it as a stopgap job.

We got a full tour of the funeral director building ... Including the mortuary room ... Where dead bodies are preserved and stuff ... *Shudders*.

That room was the room all nightmares are made off.

Oh but the workshop room where they make the coffins with a fully assembled coffin on display ... What an amazing piece of work ... Just don't remind me of what goes into it.

But the admin role would be just in the office and reception rooms, taking appointments with people and booking all the relevant stuff, but it sound awful when they describe how you have to deal with grieving people who are always in tears, and then say '... And that will cost you this many thousands of ££££'s' ...

But still, they're sending application forms in the mail as they didn't have enough to everyone who turned up, so I'll apply anyway and try to get the job ... Until a better one comes up or if I manage to get the much more amazing college receptionist job.

(If I get an interview which the advisor today said I should cos my statement was amazing, I will remember to tell them all about how its literally the most perfect and best possible job I can get right now and how I want to carry on working in the education sector as a lifelong career, because yes I do).

I only ever had to go to one funeral director. He was a really nice man. He kept asking me what colour dress thing I wanted my mother in, to which I kept replying that it made absolutely no difference at all. He also said, rather strangely I thought, that cardboard coffins weren't any good as you can't get a decent "carry" with one.

If you get in a college there may well be a chance to do invigilation and reader/scribe work as extras.

Checking out the college's website again, they have the two tick positive about disabled people logo.

This means that if my application meets the criteria, I am guaranteed an interview.

Yay. It all rests in the hand of my smashing statement I spent a whole week writing.

Also there's a new massive logistics centre that's been built for Marks and Spencer in Bradford, using nothing less than the latest high end tech, all automated super cool robot arms doing all the picking packing and sorting work, and they need loads of admins and other jobs! They have my info and will be contacting all people who attended their open day yesterday and filled out the form (which I did).

Mon - 11-5 work
Tues - Job agency stuff, advisor finds me 2 open days. Tues eve - open day 1
Weds - 11-5 work. Weds eve - open day 2.

*Le me has 3 near misses with vertigo collapses on Wednesday due to too many open days on top of work oops.

Thurs - work 10.30-5
Fri - Interview training course.

Next week - 4 days work

Week after - 4 days customer service course, 1 day some course I cant remember.

Lol I'm destroying myself. Methnks I need moar venlafaxine now :(

Wont find out until Thursday if I was successful or not, but this is how I went dressed to my interview:

(^^ Focused on the tie knot) Also after redoing it as the dimple gets removed if you loosen / re-wear the tie, so you basically need to redo it everytime you put it on.

And the tie itself.

£5 shirt, £2.50 tie, turned into magic by the super duper eldredge knot.

To be honest it kind of shows. But it's not like you're applying for a City job or anything. :3

Also: tie without a jacket?

You think I can afford a jacket? I am unemployed.

I actually got trousers, the shirts and tie paid for by the jobcentre ... But I didnt ask for a jacket.

I originally had a single £14 that was much better, but the collar didnt fit so I had to buy a pack of 3 for £15 in the correct collar size.

The Eldridge knot is awesome. I'm not sure if I would wear it to an interview w my ties, which have more contrast than yours, but I think it works well with your dark tie.

I know this sounds crazy for a guy (especially coming from me of all guys) but I think I want to work as a flourist, at least until I graduate. I'm thinking about hitting up every flourist in town in the next few weeks. Anyone know anything about this? Just for starters, how should I dress?

Observe how they dress and copy that.

Have a CV and a personalised cover letter for each shop and maybe a portfolio of your work. It might be overkill though.

If you don't get an answer straight away do follow up again. Would the run up to Christmas be a big flower buying period?

Fortunately I was dressed exactly the same as the receptionist working on the day of my interview, except I also had an Eldredge knot. The interviewers did complement how well presented I was, and agreed when I said that was one of the top 3 things my current colleagues at the job agency had repeatedly complemented me on.

So despite being cheapo, they liked my shirt and tie! But I have to wait 2-3 more days to find out if I got the job or not.

I think that sort of thing is more about attitude than money - you wore a cheap suit but showed that you were willing to dress formally. If a company turned you away because you weren't rich enough for an expensive one, I doubt it would be a good place to work anyway.

I really don't think they are supposed to be choosy based on how much people paid for their interview clothes, as long as the correct stuff was worn. They require 'Very well presented' for their receptionists, and they did say I met that. I also mentioned to them at the end that it was my first interview after 11 years, and they were even more surprised that I had dressed so well.

But I have no idea about how everyone else that was interviewed fared, there was most likely someone better than me. They said I would find out on Thursday whether or not I got the job, which is tomorrow.

I think you dressed fine. Certainly better than the man who walked into Goodwill asking for an application when I worked there a few years back with a tattered shorts, flip flops and a Hawaiian shirt that was unbuttoned letting his enormous belly get fresh air. He then took offense when I told him to 'dress up' if he was called in for an interview.

The funny thing was that the only real qualification required to get a job at Goodwill was to dress nicely for the interview - that automatically put you head and shoulders over all the other applicants. They were replacing me (I was leaving to return to school) and had many applicants and I gave them all the same advice. The girl who got the job was the only one to dress up for the interview just as I had been when I interviewed. Such simple advice that so many ignored.
