If it was illegal to seperate and divorce your spouse, would you ever get married?

Would you ever get married?

Because it was a lot harder to get sex outside of marriage way back then. Now it's comparatively much easier and cheaper.

Just because something isn't talked about doesn't mean it isn't happening.

He has a point though, in that over 50% of todays marriages end in divorce, and even if they don't end lots of people cheat and stuff.

Plus, for a man, if divorce does happen, he gets reamed in court for everything...without the lube package.

With that statistic that 50% of marriages end in divorce (or whatever figure it is), remember to interpret it carefully! That figure includes 2nd and 3rd marriages which have much higher divorce rates. 5 second google (USA stats):
Various studies on US Divorce rate show significant differences when a comparison is made in 1st, 2nd and 3rd marriage, divorce rate in America.

* Divorce rate in America after first marriage is from 41% to 50%.
* US divorce rate after second marriage is from 60% to 67%
* After 3 marriages the US divorce rate is from 73% to 74%

It strikes me as perfectly logical that "serial spouses" would be much more willing to get a divorce.

I'd like to see the figures about gay marriages compared to old-fashioned marriages, in places where both are legal. I'd also like to see figures with other factors like religion and socioeconomic status taken into account.

Probably not enough of a sample size to get anything meaningful from it; besides the fact that homosexual marriages in the United States have only been legal for three or four years, which is probably shorter than the average marriage ending in divorce anyway.

But yes, I would also like to see statistics on that, once they become a bit more meaningful.

That's why I didn't specify "in the US"... how many other places allow it? I feel like I remember a few places in Europe where it's been okayed for ages.

Fair enough, I saw something about American figures in the post above yours.

im old fashioned though im 20, i dont belive in divorce, if a couple ends up hating each other, let them live in misery in seprate rooms, but the bible condems divorce

I think it's divorce and remarriage (e.g. sermon on the mount). Hence separation would be allowed I assume.

Divorce is only allowed if it's for reasons of adultery - and even then, God will be pissed at you. He just won't count it as a sin.

Yeah, I'm sure Jesus would prefer the two people to be miserable but remain married. :(

Why would you think that God would be angry at you for having a divorce and remarriage if He said it's OK?

No I think, from my understanding of the Bible, that they can be separated but they can't get involved with anyone else, if that's of some comfort.

Not my opinion, just what the Bible says. Take it for what you will.

the bible condems divorce unless its for adultry, and even then you are not supposed to remarry. Remember when you get married its for life, well if you get married by a minister, if you dont get married by a minister, well then god doesnt recognize it anyway

I think Jesus is saying that it is adultery if you get married and divorced and remarried for any other reason except for adultery (on the other person's part). 1, 2, 3, 4.

I don't know where you are getting this idea from but these passages seem to suggest that Paul the apostle thinks marriage is marriage regardless of whether a minister performed it or not: 1, 2.

But it is your opinion because the Bible simply does not say that!

Matthew 5:32 - But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.

In plain English divorce for any reason other than adultery is committing adultery.
