Presumably, regular mermaids are faster than reverse mermaids and might be able to outrun a shark.

I doubt it. Sharks are fast, and the female human upper body just isn't as streamlined as a fish. Plus they might have to surface for air pretty often.

In addition, a reverse mermaid would be useless; a regular mermaid would have the swimming power of a fish, and be able to leave the water, albeit with great difficulty. A reverse mermaid would have to stay completely in the water forever, but would be a comparatively poor swimmer, with those human legs and feet.

I would want them both to be real.

If they are both real then there is the possibility of a threesome with a mermaid and a reverse mermaid, which might be not so weird and even kind of hot. All you do is cover up the fish parts with towels and line up the bodies. and if that doesn't turn you on enough, all you do is think "hey! I'm in a threesome!" Win-win

Of course the feasibility of that might be in question since who is going to agree to you covering up their fish parts with a towel during intercourse?
