I'll bump this in a years time. What do you want to have achieved by then?

Well, i gathered i 'likely' would have a book published (by January 2015), and this is to happen (deal done) either still prior to Summer 2015, or at the start of Autumn 2015, so not really that off.

1. Finish the 5 ongoing building projects (on 3 coasts)
2. Meet my newest baby cousin.
3. "Put a ring on it" with the gf... she knows its coming...
4. Double the number of organizers in my movement.

1. 2 of 3 done and took on three more projects!
2. Did not meet new baby cousin, and now have a second baby cousin to meet.

3. I am getting married April 19th, 2015... THIS SUNDAY!

4. We didn't double the number of organizers, but we did all right.

- Find a better paying job
- Or at least same salary but doing something i enjoy doing :)
- Exercise regulary and/or swimming. Did it for 10 months last year but stopped because of a severe illness in november. And i got used to being a slob. Time to start again.
- Gain weight (muscle, not fat obviously - but i can't get fat anyway; i did gain 2kg of muscle last year so yay me)

- Travel a lot more (related to my first point in my list)
- Learn all the things
- Get MOAR coins
- Smoke less
- Drink more !

- Hug a Samoyed (dog)
I crossed out what i did !
No different job, but i have a regular schedule sorta.
I am exercising regularly sorta. Not as often as i'd like tho.
I weigh the same but got some new muscles here and there
I did learn almost all the things.
I am smoking less and drinking more !
I did NOT hug a samoyed :(

So progress i guess.

  1. Get girlfriend and/or regular sex (10x a month or more), have this continue for the rest of my life (unless I decide for some crazy reason that I don't want regular sex for a while)
  2. Double my income
  3. USCF - 2150 or higher
  4. Wake up everyday feeling significantly better than I do now when I wake up
  5. Have epic summer memories (from summer 2015) and epic fall/winter memories while I'm at it
  6. Nothing tragic happens to me (injury, death, legal issues, etc.)
  7. Remember to check this thread in 1 year

I have no inclination to achieve anything in particular, but would like to be alive a year from now.

Quite.

As for me, I'd like:

-a girlfriend, especially a certain amazing girl

-a reasonably tolerable job

-a way to get over my driving issues

-getting back into shape; would like to stay fit enough to pass the National Guard
tests and basic without too much trouble by maybe the summer of 2015

-getting my minor in German

-study in Germany next spring semester

Oh, hey, turns out I did post in this thread. Let's see...

1. Will probably have accomplished by August, though not with the one I originally wanted. That didn't work out.

2. Nope. Just managed to get a brief volunteer position.

3. hahahaha no

4. Nope. Though, since my life plan that I'd had for several years fell apart, the Guard is a strong possibility again, and I should probably get on that.

5. Not actually sure if I have or not...

6. Writing this in Germany right now, actually

I want to set goals for the next year, but since my life is in flux right now I really can't even decide what I want to do. This will take some time and thought...

- Research, design, and assemble a new gaming PC DONE
- Plan out my basement and make it into an entertainment room in time for the world cup - buy couch, ottoman or coffeetable, figure out designated spot for dog to sit, put up posters, figure out what to do with the foostable.. Long term plans for the space include a bar at the end. So far I have a large tv on the wall ready to go and a decent couch, but this needs to improve. BASEMENT FLOODED, PROJECT DELAYED
- I need to get my goddamn license so that I can operate motor vehicles legally in Canada and other places. WHOOPS
- Visit my sister in south Carolina DONE IN STYLE
- Visit my friends in Vancouver (and maybe see Seattle and/or Portland and/or mountains) NOPE
- Start planning trip to Nepal, figure out the when and the who the hell would want to go with me PLANNING UNDERWAY
- Fix up the tv shelf in my bedroom, rearrange cables, connect electronics to house-wide network TV SHELF REPLACED WITH OLDSCHOOL DESK

Bonus priority level 2 type stuff:

- Put in an new floor in my office and maybe put the couch that's in the basement now up here NOT EVEN CLOSE
- Design and implement a garden for my backyard, to go beside my new shed NOT STARTED
- Try to seduce a woman or two NO COMMENT

So where did you decide the dog would sit (and does the dog agree with your decision)? :p

See above :(

A plan, or something to strive for.

My life is so aimless and pointless right now, and its tearing me up. I'm just going through the motions and I have no idea where its leading.

Well, I think I have achieved this finally.

Continuing to learn Japanese and getting to Japan after graduating. Huzzah for progress!

What are your driving issues?

"Driving issues" as in "various difficulties with driving a car," not as in "urgent matters." The wording was a little vague.

Yes. That's what I thought you meant.

What are your various difficulties with driving a car?

"Any idiot can drive, and most of them do", as my ex-father-in-law used to say. I thought he was quite witty.

Very true! Witty man, your ex-father-in-law.

Next year goals:

1. Check this thread from Australia a year from now.
2. Fail no courses, please God, please.
3. Publish something (just a short story in a magazine would do).
4. Get sex and/or a partner.
5. Finish reading all the books I own and have not yet touched (hahahahahhahahaha, I know this isn't going to happen. I'd need the whole damned year for Schopenhauer's The World As Will And Representation alone).

You've never seen The Amazing Race, have you? A couple of weeks ago, one of the teams was eliminated because they fell so far behind due to not understanding how to drive the car they were assigned to drive. Therefore they took public transit and accumulated so many hours in penalties that they couldn't hope to catch up even if they had managed to otherwise complete all the tasks. The host had to track them down in some train or bus depot to tell them they'd been eliminated.

Numbered list time!
  1. Finish thesis work.
  2. Get a job I like, preferably in the Northeast or maybe Georgia (lot of friends moved back there). Colorado is just too far west, and I don't know too many people on the West Coast.
  3. Take at least a two-week vacay in the summer before starting new job.
  4. Run the Boston half-marathon and the Atlanta Thanksgiving half-marathon.
  5. Get my long-run pace down to 8:20 minutes per mile.
  6. Learn how to cook some more fancy dishes--I don't know what yet, but I want to cook more.
  7. Fix the work-life balance.
  8. Max out my Roth IRA contribution and generally manage my money well.
  9. Obligatory new relationship line, time to get over the exes and move on.

That's the first round of ideas, we'll see how it goes.

 Effing 2014-Antilogic, actually putting down specific things to accomplish that makes 2015-Antilogic feel bad.

Oh well, here it goes. I wrapped up 1 a bit late, but insert Ron Paul gif here. Don't have 2 accomplished yet. 3 is already planned (:D) but it follows on 2 so it's behind sched. I did run the half marathons, in 4, but didn't get the pace I wanted in 5. If anything, I'm slower now than I was two years ago. I've switched up what I make every evening so I'm going to give myself 6. 7 is definitely repaired, thankfully. 8 was accomplished. Failed on 9, although I had a couple good prospects.

So I'll give myself a 5.5/9 (including three half-points).

My next resolution is to not publicly declare them. ;)

Goals for 2014
Be more focused on my lifting and hit 2 plate bench, 3 plate squat, and 4 plate deadlift.
Not be in grad school anymore and have some type of job that isn't completely beneath me to replace it.
Still be with girl I love.

Be generally more aggressive and adventurous than I was last year.

Bolded the successful parts.

I'm in a somewhat similar boat. I've written two novels, both designed to be mass market paperbacks. For that, I need an agent. I've made numerous, numerous queries to agencies with virtually no interest.

For the first book, I now retained one of the most celebrated editors in the world. He's giving it a thorough going over, and I hope to hear from him any day now.

For the second one, I did a major re-write and asked the lady who'd earlier edited it to take another look. She came back with numerous suggestions, but I got a nasty case of bronchitis and haven't been able to follow up.

So, what do I want to have achieved in one year's time? Have an agent for at least one of the books; have her present my book(s) to a mass-market publisher who is genuinely interested. [Publishing is a surprising long process. From the time the publisher decides to publish a book until it hits the bookstore shelves is usually about a year.]

BTW: I'm done with Chapter 5 of a planned 20-chapter novel, and so I also wish to have this book done and sent off to an editor.

Good luck :D

Yes, getting a deal with a publisher can be very difficult, and one greatly irritating obstacle for many is that most publishers virtually do not care at all about any 'quality' of the book, but just if they are told by their book market people if it is likely to sell.

Almost all new fiction big selling books here are garbage romance novels.

In the end i was sort of lucky to meet a smaller publisher, who is an academic as well, so she is interested in quality primarily (while still obviously not wanting to lose money by publishing).
