Time for the CKII update! Another five to ten years have passed. Playing as the Duchess in the Dungeon, not much was going on; I eventually gave my regent the go ahead to build a few buildings, and about the same time was thrown in the oubliette. Then the gaolers appeared, and with them the Basileus. That couldn't be good. But I survived. Minus a leg.

Thankfully, the wounds were fatal, and I succumbed to them not long thereafter. Thus my titles passed to my uncle's granddaughter, the last member of the dynasty, who had been living with her father's family on the Sea of Azov ever since her husband kicked the bucket at the age of 17.

Theodora of Achaia has pursued a path of pragmatism. Gregorios Gavros is still the Emperor, has now upped his tally to 22 victims, and is widely disliked by his subjects, noble and commoner alike. But a wise man once said that no matter how many lords turn against him, as long as he sits on the throne, he can call himself Emperor. Thus, rather than suffer the same fate as so many other dukes and duchesses, Theodora has been seeking a dual policy of rebuilding the dynasty, and establishing a power base.

To that effect, she planned to legitimize her bastard daughter, but also married the heir to the powerful but divided Kingdom of Ruthenia, which included much of Russia as well, matrilineally - a situation afforded by his mother having moved to Cumania after his father died, and the Khan of Cumania being only too happy to find an opportunity to sow trouble for his neighbors to the north. No sooner was the Duchess pregnant, than she told her spies to seek opportunities to undermine her husband's brother, the King of Ruthenia. This was only too easy - he was a Sunni king of a majority-Orthodox kingdom, and had a Suomensko spymaster! A year later, Duke Pavel of Achaia was also King of Ruthenia. The only problem was that one of the archers who murdered the king let Theodora's name slip... and it turns out Pavel was not amused by gaining the throne by virtue of his wife arranging the murder of his brother, and refuses to form an alliance with his wife.

Oh well. Theodora's son, Theodoros, is almost a year old now, lives in Greece, and is heir to Ruthenia. An alliance with Ruthenia would have been nice for overthrowing the tyrant. But the long term goal is looking good, anyway.

----------

OOS: I'm really glad she didn't wind up marrying someone while I was rotting in the dungeon. It would have been quite the problem if she'd remarried and had a child, especially a son. I'll credit Konstas Polkarios, son of Polkarios Polkarios and father of Polkarios Polkarios II - as well as being the likely father of Theodora's bastard daughter - for influencing that.

105 hours and I'm finally finished my Witcher 3 playthrough. I did not finish exploring everything in Skellige and the north of Novigrad, the former because the boat/sea mechanics are horrible, the latter because, well, I didn't want to. It gave me a little pop-up about being able to do a New Game+ but I can't say I'm overly interested in that.

From 1 to 10 how fun is the game?

Do I have to play Witcher 1 to get familiar with the lore?

Or Witcher 2?

I have all of those games complete but I cannot play pass the Witcher 1, it's not as I remember playing it years ago, it's awful, I feel like playing Witcher 1 I just forcing myself to play something that I don't like, a total wasting of time.

I don't think so. I didn't bother with Witcher 1 because of how awful it is, and I was only distantly interested in Witcher 2.

Witcher 2 could be worth playing. The ending is, at least, relevant to Witcher 3. The gameplay is better than the first game, but still not the best.

I'd probably rank Witcher 3 an 8 or 9. The beginning is rough and during the first ten hours I was almost tempted to abandon it. But I pushed through and then I just kept playing, and playing, and playing. It's the longest story game I've ever played, and the quests are interesting enough to hold your attention throughout it all. It's not like Skyrim where you're given repeating quests. Each one is unique with twists and voiceover.

I can give you a list of complaints if you need reasons not to play it, but I thought it was fun and engaging after the initial hurdle.

Sound exactly my kind of game. It's really seems like a huge treat for me. Mmmm, if Haroon start to play, he usually going nuts.

neither witcher prequels are necessary

I just worried unable to immerse in the game world due to tied reference of character, event or even quest from the previous prequel. But it seems I want to try Witcher 2 perhaps and skip Witcher 1.

The game is good at bringing you up to speed.

There is also an in-depth character list and bestiary that you can read while in-game.

Throughout the game, there was only one piece of lore that I couldn't figure out and had to ask about.

I didn't play witcher 1 and 2 before 3 and never felt it was necessary either. I've read brief summaries on the story in those games though. Not that tempted to play either of them.

I can recommend Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales though if you're interested in the witcher universe. It's a stand alone game that takes place before witcher 1 and 2.

It's not like the witcher series though, more like and card game RPG. I really liked it though.

What ending did you get? You can describe it in a spoiler tag?

Spoiler :
I'm not entirely sure. Vizima was in ruins and when I spawned in White Orchard it talked about the Nilfgaardians retreating. But the final cutscene said Nilfgaard won and formed vassal Temeria. No clue what destroyed Vizima. And it's not really Nilfgaard retreating if they're just installing a vassal state... But Ciri lived, and she joined Geralt on the Path. I named her sword Swallow. Cerys also stopped Skellige from being raiders.

Spoiler :
I haven't noticed actually if the palace in Vizima is damaged in the ending and not in the beginning? I've thought it was damaged when Nilfgaard conquers Temeria before the start of the game. But having played it a few times, I think there's really only one logical choice on who wins the war, Nilfgaard like you got. The other variations requires so odd decisions, against your character.

When I said that there are endings for me where Geralt doesn't win, I was thinking of the variation where Ciri doesn't live/uncertain if she lives.

Regarding Skellige, there are merchants on the main island of the Skellige archipelago that sells maps of the island. If you read those you get fast travel signs on the major islands. But of course, if you are a completionist you can't get around using the boat.

I gave up in Skellige. It's too big, depressing, full of useless little islands and I'm a completionist.

While it's not necessary to play prequels or read books, you'll miss a lot of background fun. You can skip Witcher 1, it doesn't connect much to W3 (except...don't lose it this time). But I'd definitely recommend books, and Witcher 2. It plays like railroaded W3 with a bit clunkier controls.

Now playing as Queen Consort Theodora of Ruthenia, Duchess Regnant of Achaia.

January 13, 1126

Today I learned of the latest attempt to overthrow the Mad Emperor.

I seem to have played my cards right. Gregorios seems to believe I'm a faithful vassal. Becoming the advisor of the tyrant has not been a trap. Has he even softened in old age? No noble of the realm executed in five years, that's a record! And he seems almost as interested in promoting the turnip as the national currency as causing chaos. No, he may be mad, but he is not soft. He just hasn't had access to proper victims for awhile.

Little does he know that my open loyalty to him is a facade. That his own spymaster had been plotting to kill him, at my urging, that his own magistros, Kyriakos, plots against him as well. It's almost unfortunate that his weaver of webs has - openly - joined up with the latest revolt.

We know by now how these end. This is what, the third open revolt? At least? Poor, beautiful Antipatra of Thessalonika, declaring war on him. She'll wind up like the rest of them, blind and with one hand, or flayed alive if she's lucky. Oh, sure, on paper she might have the troops. But I didn't grow up in House Diogenes without learning about the importance of gold. The Empire can buy mercenaries. The Empire can lose a battle and come back. It's not a winning battle to fight on the field. Not without Ruthenia.

Ruthenia. That will have to wait. Until Theodoros's reign. King Pavel will never align with me. Unfaithful harlot, was that what he called me on his last visit? Uncouth infidel, I called him back? Father was not wrong, though. A political marriage secures a kingdom for my child, and Konstas, dear Konstas, can be here, can be my general, my knight, while Pavel is off conquering Novgorod for our progeny.

Achaia shall prosper under my rule, the peasants will be safe, and well-fed. We'll build a strong foundation, undermine the Mad Emperor from within, and achieve glory when the time is right. There's no point to trying to be a hero now only to lose a limb for it later.

But alas, it is getting late. Where are the servants, I've run out of wine. Do they not realize their queen should always be well supplied with her beverage of choice?

I finally gathered enough materials to build a greenhouse in Harvest Moon: A New Beginning. This, coupled with a few 5-star crops, will allow me to divorce my R&D efforts from production.

In this game you want to raise the level of your crops by fertilizing them as they then sell for more money. Once you have raised the star level of a crop, you can turn it into seed that retains that star level when you plant it. Therefore you can raise the value of your entire production effort by raising some high-value, high-star crops. Unfortunately, this takes a very long time as you have to go through 5-10 generations of plants before you hit 5 stars. The normal growing season is only 3-4 generations long (and crops don't grow out of season), so it takes multiple years of intense fertilizing efforts to get all 5-star crops.

The greenhouse allows you to artificially control the climate of the small fields within it indefinitely, so you can plant a handful of spring or winter crops and keep the climate steady for all 10 generations. It took me long enough to gather the greenhouse materials that I have already successfully raised a handful of 5-star crops, so now I can just plant lots and lots of those 5-stars outside for production/profit and only focus on fertilizing the handful of crops in the greenhouse.

Win/Win

I spent last evening playing with a friend from Boston and we did about a dozen white maps together. Bam! I gained 4 levels (up to 82 now) in a couple of hours. None of the maps were too hard; with his bow and my melee we could handle all the hard bosses. I facetanked them and he shot from a distance. We ran all the maps as rares and ignored all the distractions like vaal areas and labs. We also tried to have a zana mission in as many as we could. That gave us two maps at a time. Leveling was really fast even if we did have a few deaths now and again. We moved pretty fast and sometimes just ran into walls of deadly mobs.

In the spirit of Halloween, today's GOOGLE page features a cute little video game.

All the player has to do is help the Black cat wave its magic wand to defeat the ghosts; simply draw the symbol above their heads.

On my first playthrough, scored a whopping
6,400 points!

On my second playthrough, scored
20,735 points!

I am certain could score more points if I had extra time and practice.

Anyway, enjoy!
