IOT Organisational and Discussion Thread

Can I have a link to the prequel to this sequel? Just for reading purposes, as this looks like fun.

<slowly getting sucked into more IOTs>

It was the game Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri.

As far as reading goes... Link to document

Orly? Well, I've heard good things about SMAC. I'll trust that this game is as good!

Considering starting up a fantasy IOT. What is the general view of such nonsense? I've only seen historical ones so far, even though I must admit I really haven't looked very throughoutly anywhere.

Sample map which isn't done yet, but you get the idea of the design:

That would be the terrain map which won't change - the political map will change each update, however, for obvious reasons.

Economy, warfare, everything is province based. Allowing a simple magic system based on the implemented economy system already present. Units are predetermined and bought. People drop into the provinces they choose during startup and then start building/conquering/playing. Some global events have effect on everything, and things like terrain modifiers are also present. (With races being especially specialized in different terrains.) Inspired by IOT, but not the same.

I think this belongs here rather than in its own thread etc., since I don't have a feel of the tradition in here so much I feel comfortable starting my own thread here. Also, really, I don't even have enough rules material to do that.

GIMMEGIMMEGIMMEGIMMEGIMMEGIMMEaahImeanum... This looks interesting, and I shall keep abreast of its development.

GIMMEGIMMEGIMME

I think Thorvald said it quite good :p

I'm happy you're all so enthusiastic about it. :)

Here's what the map will look like.

Spoiler :
(Don't mind the "100 day's march" thing in the upper right corner.
I need a little beautification on this thing, but for now, I think the provinces might be done.)

The map's limitations are intended as such - think of it as permanent terra incognita a la Europa Universalis. I like fantasy being limited to continents (I don't like the particular direction Blizzard is taking Azeroth with the Draenei space opera et al...) and I find that there's plenty of space to mess with right now.

The only thing I'm not happy about are the Njordskjalme sea provinces - they seem messy - I tried making sea combat very important up there, but then I realized that it wasn't how to do it. They have to be intricate rather than aesthethical, perhaps? Other than that, I think the map might be done.

I'm going to post a thread when I have some meat for rules foundations.

Also, try to parse the continents and provinces. Many of them are inspired by RL tropes. :)

I like the Njordskjalme sea provinces... I kinda feels as if it are the sphere from which a military harbour can easily operate and thus control

I originally read Cragpool as Crapgoul.

The main reason why every IOT except for the Mobius ones have been on Earth is that we're all far,far too lazy to come up with a completely new, balanced, and fun map. There are new maps (I&B), to be sure, but they aren't completely new.

Lazy and because most of us lack artistic talent.

Well, I have no idea whether the map will be balanced or fun. But it looks alright. ^^

The map is awesome, the biggest problem is that the writing and art not all being in the same colour will make it very unfun to colour in.

Late edit: If you want a random world in the IOT 7 kinda style there is always the EU3 random map generater.

The layers allow me to remove all text and objects, so things like that won't be a problem when coming to the political map. :)

I would definitely play, as a nation on Njordskjalme

As long as you post a blank version for us then that is fine then :)

I'm thinking of making a Swarm on the Somme IOT at one point.
