TEHRAN — Iran has shot down two unmanned western reconnaissance drone aircraft in the Gulf, a senior Revolutionary Guards commander told the semi-official Fars news agency on Sunday.

"Many spy planes and advanced planes of our enemies have been shot down (by our forces) ... We have also shot down two spy planes in the Persian Gulf," said commander Amir Ali Hajizadeh. "But it is the first time we are announcing it."

He did not say when the hostile aircraft had been shot down, but described them as "western drone reconnaissance" aircraft.

Iran is at odds with major powers over its nuclear activities, which the United States and its allies suspect are intended to enable Iran to produce nuclear bombs. Iran denies the allegations and says it wants only to generate electricity.

The United States and Israel, Iran's main foes, do not rule out military action if diplomacy fails to end the nuclear row.

How much did that cost the taxpayer?

Hah. Mildly amusing.

Iran: WE TOTALLY DO THIS ALL THE TIME, SOZ FOR NOT MENTIONING IT BEFORE LOL.

I for one think it would save us money of we didn't fly over Iran anymore.

Aren't these planes stealthy in any way? If not, they shouldn't be very difficult to shoot down... they're no blackbirds.

The OP does not say they were flying over Iran. It said they were flying over the Gulf. At a guess, I'd say they were in one of those areas Iran claims but the international community does not recognize the claim.

Yes, we shoots down da many planes all dee time!!!

Sounds a bit like the Argentines in 1982 who were very surprised to see HMS Invincible rock up in Stanley harbour, having been told that it had been sunk!

These people can not talk like this in real life. What is up with transliation making all these guys sound like evil comic book characters???

Chances of this being true = .0001%.

Note the Iranians say nothing about their territory, but just the Gulf. If it was their territory, I am sure they would be very specific about that.

I'm thinking "pictures of the fragments or it didn't happen." And preferably not doctored pictures. Remember that photo of the Iranian missile test, with one "contrail" obviously photocopied from one of the others?

It isn't very difficult at all to shoot down a slow-moving drone. In fact, prior to being used to engage in surveillance and remotely assassinate people, that was their only real use.

So when Ahmadinajad said he's going to wipe Israel off the map, he meant in Photoshop. :)

I am sure if it comes to blows Iranian media will be full of fake footage showing just that. You know Dresden and Tel Aviv look remarkable similar when bruned down.

Nice propoganda video that. I'm guessing though that it was a plane (or more than one) entering Iranian airspace at high altitude hoping not to get caught. It wouldn't be the first time that CoW forces have violated Iranian territory deliberately since 2003.

Don't worry, if this was actually war Israel or the US would hack into Radar à la Operation Orchard
