Is Youtube Losing Popularity?

But Youtube is becoming even bigger than that now. Many DVD players and TVs have internet access, and the numbers continue to grow. Youtube is available on nearly all of them. It is also the only completely free service.

Does anybody actually use these? Smart TVs and such are pretty much universally terrible in my experience. I only have one because manufacturers now insist on bundling worthless "smart" features into any of their high-end tvs.

For that matter, the youtube web interface is pretty poor too. I only use it a couple times per month, and am immediately annoyed by the poor interface unless I'm running something like YouTube Center or YousableTubeFix.

I've found that 3rd party peripherals, such as the Xbox or Roxio, are generally superior to smart TV's built in systems.

The servers of Youtube and Wikipedia are the new marvels of humankind. They are now more valuable than the ancient world wonders, by much.
There are millions of crappy videos on Youtube, yes, but there are also so many that are authentic masterpieces. The biggest human knowledge library there is, along with the Wikis.
Maybe I'm super-fanboy, as I watch about 10 videos a day, but I think that what I say is an objective truth.

At least YT seems far less easy to actually manage to kill videos from, since it is video-based and not that much user/uploader based. Whereas in FB they can kill a user if they want to, in YT the point is to show some info in this form, and if needed thousands can re-upload it.

I use my smart TV all the time. I don't have cable anymore, just Netflix and Amazon prime, which are easily accessed via the smart tv's apps. Amazon Prime's app is crap (and it is crappy on multiple devices, not just my smart tv) but Netflix's app is pretty awesome. I also use Pandora and occasionally Vudu and Youtube. The Youtube app is pretty crappy as well; it only shows you a fraction of the search results you would get when you do the same search on a computer.

I do have a laptop hooked up to the TV but I only use it when I want to watch something on Hulu as the Hulu app for my TV is paid-only.


Anywho, the Apps on my smart TV are update able and do update occasionally. The Youtube app recently removed an input method that allowed for faster typing when you searched for videos, which kind of sucked. I imagine it was hard to use for a lot of people but once you understood it then you could type pretty quickly. Doesn't matter either way though as I can use the keyboard built into my remote.

Bad smart TVs are usually plagued with bad apps, they aren't themselves necessarily bad.

At best it's an extra cost for features you never use, typically you pay more for planned obsolescence with a subpar experience and security issues that never get patched.

I agree with you. Though I tend to cringe at opinions being bandied about as "objective truth". Also the Hanging Gardens of Babylon I would've liked to see (or make a version of myself if I get rich).
