The Gospel of Membertou: The First Revelation
Membertou ran through the woods, chasing after a baby woodchuck. The muscles in his legs grew taught and slackened alternatively as rushed along, dodging around branches and stones and jumping over obstacles he could not easily dodge. He was laughing as he ran, his face glowing in the sun as he began to close the gap between himself and the critter, when the woodchuck suddenly halted and turned to face the prophet. Taken aback, Membertou tripped, knocking his head on a root and going unconscious.
Slowly, Membertou opened his eyes to see...nothing. He was surrounding by black on all sides and though he seemed secure he could sense neither ground below him nor any distinction between the surface on which he lay and the dark space around him. Slowly, he began to sit up, noticing that the pain had left his head. Looking about him he still saw nothing, when out of the corner of his eye he noticed a bright light beginning to form.
Turning his head, he stared directly at the bright, white light as it began to grow and take shape. Slowly, he saw small legs and arms forming, and then a head. The shape continued to grow in size, until it was as large as him before the light began to fade. Gradually, Membertou realized that before him was a very large, and very old woodchuck. Looking into its eyes he saw wisdom beyond anything he could comprehend, knowledge of all that has been, all that is, all that may yet come.
And then, as of from nowhere, he realized in whose presence he was. It was Nokemis, Grandmother Woodchuck, the most revered and honored of his people's g-ddesses. She was older than the earth and older than any other deity. It was she who shaped land from the mud at the bottom of the sea, she who turned pebbles into mountains, and she who raised forests from seeds. Her years were so many that they were beyond her wisdom, and her wisdom so great it was beyond her years.
“Son, I am the Earth Mother, sister of the Moon Mother. I am well known already to you and your people, but the truth of my nature has been obscured by generations upon generations who have lost their way. It is your duty to bring the peoples of the Dawn Lands the Good News. You will be receiving future revelations my son, this is only the first of many, for you have been chosen for a great destiny, to be the bearer of truth, the greatest of all prophets.”
And so Membertou remained with the Earth Mother for a great time, for what seemed numerous suns. Grandmother Woodchuck taught him of the creation of the world, and of humanity. She told him of the trials and tribulations that the first people bore; of the wars that beset both man and beast; of the great floods and fires that consumed the world; and of much more. After what seemed to him at least a month, she abruptly stopped speaking and turned to him. In his eyes She saw his confusion, and smiled saying, “The First Revelation is ended, there is nothing more for you to learn. Goodbye.”
She placed her paw on his shoulder, and looked into his eyes. Slowly, her aura of light began to fade and her form to blur. She began to gradually shrink in size, until there was but a speck of light left and then, there was nothing but darkness. Tentatively, Membertou attempted to open his eyes and a flood of bright light entered them. Turning his head, he saw the baby woodchuck he had been chasing in what seemed so long ago. It was the same day and the same wind blew across his face. Slowly, he rose to his feat, then took off at a run back to his village.
OOC: Sorry for the horrid ending, it's really late here and I probably won't have another chance to get this done before the update.
