Coming back from Publix a bit ago, so dude decides to skip the stopped traffic in the construction by passing the entire line on the shoulder. Do people really think they're geniuses? And do people all the sudden forget there are "rules of the road" as soon as they can drive?

I won't say that one should have to retest on renewal or somesuch, but is a little common sense and common courtesy too much to ask?

Maybe he had his pregnant wife in the backseat and he needed to get to the hospital.

I don't have a problem with people driving on the shoulder if they're taking the next exit, and they go slow. But the ones who zip by you and then try to merge in

There's a number of 4 lane roads with the right lane turning into a right turn only and the left lane turning into a simple 2 lane road along my route to work and these right turn only lanes have several signs and road markings the size of a small child indicating such and every now and then there'll be someone who tries to bypass the through traffic via the right turn only and merge in several cars ahead.

I'll intentionally keep them from merging in once they get into the solid bumper line! I'll push my car as fast as it can go, I don't care if it's the middle of winter and my car stalls, you don't get to take the easy way through! If it's an especially heavy traffic day, I'll ride right up to the guy in front of me's rear to keep the guy at a complete stop at the intersection trying to merge left out and if I'm very lucky, someone actually making a right turn will honk him.

Just pull your car slightly into the shoulder. A foot or two.

I'm sure that is what the vast majority of people think when they see some idiot doing something like this.

I've done what Contre suggested a few times myself. I've also seen unmarked cop cars give them tickets.

Not true. Usually more enraged that a cop won't be there when someone does that but is there when they do something wrong.

As for me personally, I spent a very long time with a clean record to get sweet insurance deals. I'm not going to do anything that risks raising my rate or deductible. But yeah, I also don't like the idea of people getting away with things like that (it's disrespectful to other drivers), especially in a construction zone where you have workers on the road.

There is quite a difference between speeding or violating other similar traffic laws, and using the shoulder to pass people who are stuck due to some road condition for the very reason you mentioned. it is disrespectful to everybody else who is patiently waiting their own turn. I personally think the penalty should be far more severe than a simple traffic violation. This is what causes road rage.

... er, how? The shoulder isn't a traffic lane. Driving in it while everyone else is stuck bumper-to-bumper is at very best, selfish.

Which is exactly what I am stating.

Wait, are you putting the douche driving in the shoulder above or below, on an awful person scale, than speeders?

It should be obvious given what I have posted. I don't know how I could make it any clearer. Perhaps you didn't see my edit. But even so, I think it was clear from my first comment.

Slightly off topic, I won't drive in the shoulder but if there is a lane no one is in & I don't know why, I will drive way past everyone in that lane until I realize why no one is in it.

And then you cut in once you realize (which you should have realized when you saw the completely empty lane) that there is road construction closing that lane. I purposely refuse to let people that do that cut in.
