Hello my fellow humans! Welcome to Valland, a prosperous island nation of five million, situated in the North Atlantic Ocean. It's a pleasant country, thriving off of its abundant natural riches. The seas are replete with fish, the mountains are a trove of valuable minerals, and the geothermal heat of the earth itself provides nearly unlimited cheap electricity to the island. Education levels are high, unemployment is low, and Valland boasts one of the world's highest standards of living, and shows no sign of changing at any point in the foreseeable future.

Greetings, Kaiju! Welcome to Valland, an island which contains lots of delicious little morsels who have built a lot of big things that are fun to stomp on and destroy. You've all got our reasons for being here- some of you may be servants of alien civilizations of tremendous power. Others could be rogue forces of nature, following no greater agenda beyond their own. Some of you might even be... *sigh* I don't know, defenders of the land or something ridiculous like that.

Regardless of your aims and origins, however, you all hold much in common:

You are humongous, with some Kaiju topping 100 meters or more in height, and exceeding 100 000 tons in weight.

Your paths are all converging on Valland, and the humans have no idea whatsoever.

So, welcome to Valland! Take a look around! And please do not crush me beneath your mighty feet/claws/tentacles! No! Please! No! AAAUUGH!

The world of this NES is culturally very similar to our own, although the technology in certain areas is more advanced, generally to allow for rule of cool things such as giant combat machines and anti-Kaiju weaponry. The world outside of Valland is very similar to our own, although it is largely outside of the focus of this NES, at least for now.

Valland itself is, as mentioned, a large island in the North Atlantic. It is roughly 600 kilometers across, and located on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, south of Iceland and directly in between Great Britain and Newfoundland. Its industries are dominated by fishing, mining and smelting (and other high energy consumption industries), thanks to the abundant and cheap geothermal and hydroelectric energy available to the island. Today the population speaks a dialect of English, although a proportion of the population also speaks Vallandic, an endangered language which has been brought back from the brink by a vigorous linguistic restoration program.

The island was originally settled by the Norse in the 10th century, underwent governmental collapse in the 14th century, and declined dramatically in population during the little Ice Age. England established control over the island between the 16th and 17th centuries, and would heavily influence the nation from then on. The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw the growth of nationalist sentiment, which led to incremental reductions of British influence, culminating in full independence after the First World War. Valland was delayed in joining the Second World War, but ultimately did so on the allied side. Valland was a founding member of NATO, although since the end of the Cold War it has gradually drifted away from being an active participant in world affairs, preferring to focus on matters closer to home.

Credits
Pacific Rim, various Godzilla movies, Cloverfield, Daftpanzer for spriting guidance, Jamestout for developing the style upon which I have based my sprite buildings, and the Republic of Iceland. Also credit to all of you who have expressed interest in this NES, without whom this would remain nothing but a cool idea in the back of my head.

The Big Question
Yes, you can build Jaegers. Or giant mechs. Or whatever you wish to call them. However, we don't have them yet. The first turn of this NES will involve the first Kaiju attack. Subsequently, human players will have to react with whatever resources they have on-hand. However, in subsequent updates, humans will possess increasingly powerful means to combat these beasts. So just hold tight, and things will get awesome.

Joining as a Kaiju

Name: Kaiser Schield
Description: At only around 85 meters tall, Kaiser Schield (Also known as "The Caesar of Chelonii") is one of the smaller kaijus in stature. However, his small size is more than made up by what apears to be one of the most impenetrable bodies ever. He appears as a giant, green bipedal snapping turtle, with a giant spike on his snout and covered with spikes all over his black shell. Adorning his hands are a hand adorned with five fingers, each with razor sharp claws which can cut through steel. His tail also spikes similar to an stegosaurus, and to complete his imposing visage are two, giant, five-clawed feet.

Kaiser Schield was named such for his shell. It is one of the most resilient materials found in nature, and is hypothesized to be as hard as, if not harder, than diamonds. He can direct artillery hits on his backside without even feeling it, and even fellow kaiju will find it painful to strike at his stomach or back. His weak points are his fleshy face, arms, and legs, which do not have the same protection as shell. Still, Kaiser Schield is renowned for his ability to shrug off and resist pain; he is truly one of the most resilient kaiju ever.

The Kaiser's main form of attack is his giant claws. Perfering a style of brute strength over skill, any "strategy" he employs is simply to cut or stab the enemy into submission. He simply relies on his massive bulk to simply withhold anything his enemy can dish out, and thus doesn't attempt to try to outsmart his foes. This means Kaiser Schield is very predictable in fights, abliet still extremely dangerous. Any kaijus who try to brawl with the giant turtle will be cut up if they don't have a plan against him.

However, there are major faults of the Kaiser. He can not fly, and he's slow to walk. Therefore most kaijus outspeed him even accounting for his smaller mass. However, as a turtle he can swim at a respectable speed, and thus is more advantageous to fight near the waterfront His smaller size also dilutes some of the raw strength that he would otherwise have. He is fully grown, so this size difference will continue to plague him. Kaiser Schield also lacks a breath weapon, or any sort of ranged attack in general besides a roar, which is only useful for being intimidating and shattering windows for the most part. This again makes Kaiser Schield easy to pick off at range if the need be arrives for a kaiju or humanity to fight him.

The war turtle does not feel any sort of particular like nor dislike for humans or kaiju. He is simply coming to the island of Valland for one reason; claim a territory for himself in his urge to find a mate. The Kaiser is a very territorial creature with his hormones, and demands an area of land to be reserved for his own needs. If he feels humans are encroaching on his land, he will attack their settlements and wipe it out. However he will not go out and actively hunt humans if they leave him alone and stay out of his turf. Same thing goes with rival kaijus. As long as he's left alone, he will leave them alone.

In the end, the The Caesar of Chelonii represents a brutal bastion of broken buildings. Whether or not he is considered benevolent or malevolent to either side he cares not. All he wants is the largest demise to attract a possibly non-existent mate, and if it means tearing a city or two, he will do it.

Name: Hornberg External Island Mechanical Defense Army League (HEIMDAL)
Description: The Island of Hornberg (and neighboring Hansey) has always been... different from the rest of Valland. The area first discovered and settled by the Norse, Hornberg, today, is the only area of Valland where Vallandic is spoken as commonly as English. HEIMDAL was formed in the heights of the Cold war as a civil-defense organization by a group of fishermen and factory workers for the protection of Hornberg, and by extension, Valland from Soviet Infiltration. Though nowadays that self-appointed mandated has very little relevance, HEIMDAL still meets regularly as a sort of Old-Boys club.

Edit:

Name: Flying Worm

Description: The name is pretty descriptive, but playful, not doing justice to the magnitude of this strange creature of nature. This creature vaguely resembles a dragon, although it is more like a large scaly worm with wings that resemble those of a dragon. The mouth resembles the mouth of a lamprey, with three rows of sharp teeth. Has six tentacles throughout the body that help the Worm to get around once in the soil, and give it a look somewhat peculiar, what you might call a wormy dragon with tentacles.

Its long body gives flexibility both in the air and on the ground, and its wings allow the creature to reach great heights. However, under water, wings hinder the mobility of the creature. The scales make the creature resistant to projectiles and external temperatures. They are gray, as if devoid of color, life. The tentacles have suckers that help the creature to grab and move when on the ground.

Another important characteristic is the size of that colossal creature which has a length of 125 meters, however, can grow further, if too much feed. And do not think that the worm eats little, this monster is endowed with a formidable hunger.

The fragility of the wings and tentacles can be cited in the list of weaknesses.

The worm uses his body as a tool of attack, using it to twist, slap and grab. Its tentacles are used as an aid in combat, especially for small targets. Its long tail can be used effectively in combat, useful to unbalance and topple big opponents, in addition to being useful in certain areas with a sweeping wave of destruction. The worm can also use its mouth to act as a leech. However, it is not very robust, and depends on its agility and flexibility in combat.

There are legends that the creature is very old, and that is in the world much earlier than men. However, the legends say the last of this kind died long ago, in a battle against the ancient Norse gods, and since then the Earth was deprived of those terrible monsters. Obviously, no one believes that these creatures even existed, at least not until something woke up the last of these ancestral beings of its eternal sleep.

Hoping to join as a Kaiju, more later.

Name: The Beast
Description: A massive, and I mean massive, Kaiju. It is extremely slow, but very well armored, making taking it down is nigh impossible, but the monstrosity does relatively little damage while attacking. It glows a slight green, and look vaguely like a massive spider, having eight huge legs for stability and a set of pincers.

Like this, but better armored.

Sure I'll join as a kaiju.

Morra Förfölja

400px-MH3_Lagiacrus.jpg

Primarily aquatic, this dragon-like creature spends most of its time in the sea, coming ashore to hunt or feed, though it seems to prefer hunting ships at sea. It is over 110 meters in length and over 80,000 tons in weight. It is extremely nimble in the sea but slower (though still quite fast) on land.

'Morra Förfölja' has thick scales, like blocks of thick iron, especially along its back and over its face. It has a thick crest over its head that extends back over its neck which provides excellent protection of its anterior sections. Its ventral surface is much more lightly armored, the scales there being much thinner- allowing it to retain a high degree of agility but making it susceptible to attacks along this surface. The scales of the 'Morra Förfölja' also serve to absorb energy and sound waves, in particular underwater, helping it avoid detection by sonar or other means. On land, its radar signature is still much smaller then might be expected for a creature its size but much greater then it is in the water.

The creature has claws and a particularly devastating bite able to crush a large ship in two before it even realizes the 'Morra Förfölja' lies under it. It will also use the bony crest to head-but opponents and its tail to slam opponents with a whip-like action. The monster can preform a coiling attack in which it will coil inwards and into a tight ball then swing its tail out whip-like, and will often do so to cover a quick turn or retreat.

The 'Morra Förfölja' is a creature of ice and cold and water around it will quickly cool to near freezing. Its bite in particular is freezing and an opponent bitten will frost over quickly, freezing hydraulics, electronics, or muscles equally. It is resistant to heat or energy attacks, though these will heat the 'Morra Förfölja' and counter its own freezing bite. And while the damage of the heat attack is mitigated by the creature's cold aura, the heat attacks seem to tire it somewhat. Cold actually strengthens it and provides energy.

The creature heals very quickly in cold waters but does not do so on land. Warmer waters slow its regeneration.

On land the 'Morra Förfölja' does not have excellent endurance, its heavy scales and agility quickly tiring it- especially in the warm sun. During a winter snowstorm it will be much tougher on land. Usually unless the weather is particularly cold, it will not stray far inland. In the water it is truly at its best and if it can, it will drag an opponent into the sea to fight it there, where it is strongest and can use all four claws, its bite and its tail simultaneously.

The Morra Förfölja has not yet been approved by Iggy and may need to be edited considerably.

Incident 1.0 - April 28, 2042 - Kaiser Schield Emerges

In retrospect, the first warning of the first Kaiju's approach was a magnitude 6.6 earthquake, recorded at the national seismological centre's facilities in Hornberg and Farrey, the two major cities on the island of Sodraland. Earthquakes along the Mid-Atlantic ridge, however, are quite common, and thus easily attributed to natural causes. Why would they have thought otherwise?

At 3:42 AM local time, a fishing trawler operating out of the small coastal settlement of Learsby released its final message, a frantic distress call. Only six minutes later, the town of four hundred was struck by a devastating tidal wave, thoroughly thrashing its harbour and capsizing most of the vessels moored there. The wave continued a short distance onto land, flattening the better half of the city, which was built on low ground in a tight ring around said harbour.

Very little record exists of the next hour, prior to the arrival of national emergency response teams on the site, beyond amateur footage taken by one of the survivors of the disaster. While the light levels were too low for video, audio records confirm 3:55 AM as the time that the organism now known as Kaiser Schield made landfall.

The first helicopter-borne rescue crews arrived close to 5:00 AM to find the town in ruins. The breakwater was utterly gone, swept away like a child with a sandcastle. Over 80% of the town's buildings were flattened, and colossal footprints, each over 15 meters long, cut a trail through Learsby. The town's fuel depot had ignited, worsening the situation. The rescue crews immediately set about to triage, desperately trying to limit the mounting death toll, distributing blankets to the hypothermic survivors. Attempting to ascertain the nature of the disaster, many of the traumatized survivors provided consistent accounts of a huge wave, followed by a humongous black beast rising out of the waters, crushing many of those who had made it through the initial tsunami.

It was later that morning that camera crews, following the giant footprints, first filmed Kaiser Schield, a humongous, spiked turtle-like being, who stopped its inland march, and was now holding its position on an isolated hilltop in southwestern Sodraland. What followed was an international media frenzy, as thousands of journalists descended upon the unremarkable town of Learsby, significantly outnumbering the local populace and inadvertently hampering the ongoing humanitarian efforts in the area.

One week has now passed. Kaiser Schield remains at the top of international headlines, and shows no sign of leaving soon. The incredible beast remains at a standoff with the humans who now surround it in a wide perimeter. Camera crews, both in the air and on foot, are growing increasingly bold, the Vallandic Armed Forces (augmented by the local civil defense group HEIMDAL) have been deployed, and the world holds its breath in anticipation of the creature's next move.

On the side, debates rage in all fields. Scientists struggle to explain how such a humongous creature go undiscovered for so long, how can something of such a scale even exist without collapsing, and how does it even feed itself? Militaries are conducting war games, plotting how they might attempt to destroy such a creature were it to come ashore in a more populated area. Some of the public believe Kaiser Schield to be an incredible organism, to be protected, while others focus on the humanitarian story, focusing on the disaster that has befallen Learsby itself, as the small town struggles to come to grips with what has happened, and the search for survivors begins to draw to a close.
