Spoiler:
LK169_AD1670.png

Preturn: Going for Desert Fort. It gives free units every 6 turns and the camels are useful in that they aren't slowed by Desert.

IBT: Elephant kills a Praetorian in Chengdu.

1640 AD: Kill Elephant. Lose knight to the Siege XBow so kill with an Enslaver gaining a Slave. A knight checking for other incoming units finds and kills the Chinese Settler.

Kill other units gaining a leader (Academy in Chengdu) another worker (so 3 gained this turn) and lose 2-3 units including a Missionary vs a def 1 unit.

Another Magreb landing is killed.

IBT: Indochina starts showing up with a larger force. We defend on two hills we claimed and get lucky winning 5 out of 6 battles vs MDI and Xbow.

1645 AD: Indochina def 4 units will be a pain. We kill two and lose a Knight of the Realm.
It is fortunate we were sending most units toward China. We should be ok.

1650 AD: Kill off some Indochinese and some more near Arabia.

IBT: Some Faster Indochinese. Not sure why they showed up late. Another war?

1655 AD: More Indochinese killed. Minor losses.

IBT: We win most battles on defense. I am trying to hold 2 hills near Beijing to keep the Indochinese off them but that means they can attack first turn.

1660 AD: Capture Hangchow from Magreb. It is only 162 gold - the Magreb are much poorer. Gain a Monk and use it on Hangchow. Moved toward Polish Gniezno.

1665 AD: Capture Gniezno and explore its border. I think I now see both Polish town borders and the first South American border. Looks like one town has Gems so that with be the next Northern target. Note that only Sheepish Pig Iron is supplying Knights north so less units to use there.

Spot a Chinese town of Tienstin. Move some Knights that way. For the other Chinese border, I move workers and other units onto a hill for defense. City is likely close.

Unit costs are high enough that we are over -100 gpt. Switch to infrastructure to soon reduce Lux to 0%. The gems will help with this.

IBT: We got Renassance and are working on Humanism. Lose the limes.

1670 AD: Actually going for Banks first now we can build them. Forgot about that.

Arabian city of Torun was closer than I thought, so I capture it.
Got a Leader so desert fort rush next turn.

Kill stacks of South American units. Forced to leave a unit exposed. Maybe it will retreat.

Capture Chinese city of Xinjian which was north.

Capture Tienstin and the Chinese are gone. It is now hard to see towns in the South.

1675 AD: Move toward Lvov which is now owned by South America so they and Poland are at war. Likely why we haven't seen as many of their troop.

IBT: Missed a enemy unit and we get pillaged.

1680 AD: Lose 3 Knights to the pillaging defense 4 unit on grassland before we kill it.
Got another monk and worker (about 4 of each so far) vs Indochina units.
Capture Lvov from South America. Kill their units in teh desert

IBT: Indochina continues to send units including some fast ones that kill damage our stack.

1685 AD: Pillage road to slow Indochina and get first attack. They have a stack of 11 defense 4 defenders and more behind it.

Notes:
I was working on placing a town that will eventually get high science/gold with 2 5-gold pearl squares, Grassland for scientist support and a bunch of water squares. There is one other settler in our capital that we haven't decided on where to go.
LK169_AD1685a.png

For the northern front it will become much easier once we capture vilcabamba and the Polish city (can just see border of hopefully last town).
LK169_AD1685b.png

South has been dealing with Indochina more than the Magreb.

We are getting a nice large empire. It is up to 37 cities. I am glad to see another civ was wiped.

The only question mark for us right now is do we own coal. With the empire size, and number of mountains / forest, I would hope so. The empire already feels like we could use a rail-net.

Of the known civs, we are still up Clockworks. Joe gets to decide if we make a push for wonders from Free Artistry. Humanism will give us universities as a prebuild for them.

Maghreb having less cash is bad news. They are keeping us at high research. I still hope there is enough to steal to keep max research a little longer. I do see more of their cities by former China.

It sounds like most of the new troops have to keep moving toward the Indo-China front. The toughest part with them if the 4 defense unit. At this point we have no clue where their cities are, and can't afford to explore for them.

In reading your report it isn't clear of the new workers are heading back to the core. Working on Chinese cities is near the bottom of the priority list.

Some workers are headed to the front lines to connect the last chinese city I think we also need a few to reconnect so should have a at least a single roading stack down there I didn't count though so there may be a few extras due to gaining workers. Other than that most are closer to the core.

I got it.
Greebley, I like your 1 city site.
Of the known civs, we are still up Clockworks. Joe gets to decide if we make a push for wonders from Free Artistry.
Right now, I am Inclined to go for Free Artistry and a shot at building The Great Playhouse and maybe 1 other happy Wonder. Possibly, all 3 if it looks like we have a chance to snag all 3.

In the map below, I was thinking about building on the Red circle. However, in drawing the outline I realized it would take a lot of worker turns to make it a viable city. So I am thinking of building a city on the W.
sa6fgb.jpeg

I agree red circle is meh. Worker turns are something we don't have a ton to spare. We still have core cities with undeveloped tiles.

W is okay. We still have the open grassland section near China to fill in. Low shields, but nice at flat.

Grats on the death of Poland.

We still have the open grassland section near China to fill in
If you mean the area southeast, of what I have shown in the above map, on the coast down towards Rome. I thought about it, but decided to build to expand outr borders not back fill. Partly because cities built there might be closer to Rome than some of our production cites and cause an increase in their corruption. After Free Artistry maybe we should get Judiciary for Lawyers and Court Houses.

Mid set update. Sorry no pictures.
We meet 2 new civilizations (India and Canada) by Maghreb territory. India is still in the Dark Ages and does not know The Republic. Canada is a few techs behind us.
Now the good news.
None of the known civs have knowledge of Printing Press and we are 7 turns away from learning Free Artistry. I am prebuilding Universities (same amount of shields as the Wonders). Veii's University is due in 7 turns which is when Free Artistry is due. I have 3 other cities building Universities due in 8 turns.

Continuing 1685 AD: Do some MM. Economics will make Temples obsolete, so I switch Sheepish Pig Iron to a Great Religious Center. Hispalis is switched to building a Wine Supplycenter.

Annexing Kalisz: Knight kills Polish Spearman (16, 2); Knight killed by Spearman (16, 3); Knight kills Spearman (17, 3). The city is added to our nice nation. The Polish Nation is no more, its citizens are now part of our growing Nation.

Far west of Hangchow, Knight kills Maghreb Trebuchet (18, 3). Given how far the Maghreb city is from our current borders, I am going to withdraw back inside our borders until I have a bigger SoD that includes combat workers and at least 1 monk. Besides, which there is a Maghreb city shares a border with our city of Xinjan.

1700 AD: Annexing Vilcabamba: Knight kills Inca Crossbow (19, 3); Knight of the Realm kills Firelancer (20, 3); Knight killed by Firelancer (20, 4); Knights kill 3 Firelancers (23, 4); Knights kill 2 Crossbows (25, 4). The city is added to our noble nation. The city is renamed La Bamba.

Defending Brundisium: Knight killed by Indo-Chinese Firelancer (68, 9); Two (2) Musketmen killed by Firelancer (68, 11); Praetorian kills Firelancer (69, 11).

1720 AD: An India Ratha (Chariot) appears north of Xinjian. India is very backward, we could trade them The Republic, but instead we want politely ask them to surrender their entire nation to us. However, since we cannot ask the to surrender we declare war on them. :hammer::dunno:

West of Syracuse, Bombard kills a Japanese Mounted Samurai (70, 11) and a Knight also kills a Mounted Samurai (71, 11).
Annexing Vitcos: Knight kills Inca Meso Pike (72, 11); Knight kills Meso Spearman (73, 11); Knight kills Crossbow (73, 11). The city is added to our noble nation.
Defending Rocky Mountain High: Knight kills Crossbow (74, 11); Bombard kills Crossbow (75, 11): Missionary converts Crossbow (76, 11).

West of Krakow, Knight kills Japanese Spearman (96, 11).

1730 AD: Defending Annaba: Knight kills Indo-Chinese Firelancer (97, 11); Knight kills Firelancer (98, 7); and we get a Great Leader. The Great Leader rushes a Castle in Anna. Knight kills War Elephant (99, 7); Knight kills Crossbow (100, 7); Missonary converts Crossbow (101, 7).
West of Hangchow: Knight kills Indo-Chinese Firelancer (102, 7). Maghreb Knights kill 3 Maghreb Crossbows (105, 7).

IBT: West of Hangchow: Enslaver killed by Maghreb Crossbow (105, 8). Second Enslaver retreats from a Crossbow. This raises a question:  How come the Crossbows ignored the Praetorians and Musketmen in the same stack and attacked the invisible Enslavers? :hmm: Did my workers that were in that stack make the Enslaver visible?

Here is a screenshot of the stack in question, taken after I dispatched the offending Crossbows
saPONS.jpeg

The only workers in the area are the 9 in my stack of troops

1735 AD: West of Hangchow: Knight kills Maghreb Crossbow (106, 8); Missionary converts Crossbow (107, 8).

Knights kill 4 Crossbows (120, 10); Missionary kills Crossbow (121, 10).

East of Vitcos, Knight kills Japanese

Notes and Suggestions:
  • I may have saved the file when it was "zoomed out" for the upcoming screen shoots.
  • Great Playhouse (400 shields); Taj Mahal (400 shields); Neuschwanstein (400 shields).
  • Veii will complete University on same turn we learn Free Artistry.
    • I am sure you know the drill, when we learn Free Artistry, look at the big picture and switch Veii to Great Playhouse. I suggest the Great Playhouse because it puts a Theater in every city, so besides a Happy face every city gets culture.
    • After Veii builds the Great Playhouse, consider having either Veii or Sheepish Pig Iron build a University while the other city builds Knights. This would be our third University and complete the prerequisite for building Galileo's University.
  • The 3 other cities building Universities as prebuilds (Cumae, Antium, Pompeii) are due a turn later. I would switch Cumae and Pompei to the other Wonders and let Antium (who has the highest science research) build a University.
  • Because the Indo-Chinese nation’s color is tan, I sometimes I had trouble telling their troops apart from our “brown” troops.
  • Screenshots in my next post.

The crossbows have selective attack. That is why they could attack the enslavers. I try to never put enslavers on the front line for this reason.

The city count is growing nicely. We are up to 46 of them. We own 9.5% of the land already, and we aren't even close to railroads.

It is very frustrating that Maghreb is broke. I was look for them to be the source of cash to keep max science going.

Good luck to Elephantium. 3 potential wonders are on the way. If we can get all of them, we may be able to drop to 0% luxuries. That would be a big plus.

I like seeing the Victos has saltpeter. Spare sources are always good in case one gets cutoff. If that gets rid of 4 defense units from another nation, it is even better.

I was in a hurry to post and did change the captured Inca cities to starve and hire all Scientists there. If they are changed to all Scientists we drop the learning time of Free Artistry down to 4 turns.

None of the known civs have completed researching Printing Press. I think we have a very good shot at getting all three wonders. If we drop luxuries to 0% we have a small positive cash flow at 70% research.

The crossbows have selective attack. That is why they could attack the enslavers. I try to never put enslavers on the front line for this reason.
:yup: I like the term "selective attack" much more than the term "stealth attack" used by Firaxis. The enslaver is a valid target for a selective attack by all crossbowmen (with the exception of the Burmese crossbowman, where I have forgotten to set the stealth attack targets in CCM 2.5). The setting of selective targets for dozens of units (here the crossbowmen) among thousands of available possible target units is an enormous piece of work in modding a scenario or mod.

The enslaver is a valid target for a selective attack by all crossbowmen
The description of Enslaver states they are only visible to Workers and Holy Men. Obviously, Crossbows are not Workers. Plus, Crossbows are not described as Holy Men. So why can Crossbows see Enslavers? Also, if the eye sight of Crossbows is so good that they can see Enslavers why do they lose that ability when they are upgraded? Why is it not possible for TOW Infantry to see what a Crossbow can see?

Another bothersome question: Why should the Crossbows be able to ignore defensive units and target offensive units?
