I think his point was that A: it shouldn't be illegal or B: if that's illegal, so should discrimination against racists.

I'd concede the point if he thinks that employers shouldn't discriminate against people who committed crimes of moral turpitude for option B. Racism is a pretty clear indication of moral defect and so is a history of criminality.

The point is they're not a persecuted minority. They're not liked by the majority society, mostly because they refuse to adjust to its rules and norms, which other minorities have little to no problems with.

a) in the situation described I had known this guy was a Roma (he didn't look like one)
b) it was true in general. Because you see, the English word "gypsy" doesn't really correlate with what our (now politically incorrect) variant describes. You'd probably confuse them with Arabs, Indians, or other Middle Eastern/south Asian nationality due to their appearance (which ranges from "can't tell" to "whoa, aren't you an Indian?").
