[UNIT] Mighty Ships Et Al

Here is another one, MightyToad, if you want to. Don't worry about adjusting the texture colors or face, I'll edit all that stuff later. :) Reference images are included.

This will be a proper ancient Japanese worker for you, Walter. :)

Here is the USS Independence. I chose this ship because of its interesting looking ship.
Not a formidable ship offensively. The Navy apparently wishes they had just built more Frigates rather than these.

This actually reminded me of the stuff I saw in Supreme Ruler files. I ripped quite a bit out of there to use in RI, because unit models (especially planes) are extremely Civ 4-friendly. But identifying them is sometimes a chore, as every models is stored with a simple number for a name; texture names can sometimes give a hint, but not always. So, long story short, there are three ship models there that are obviously LCS-based, with the texture name only hinting at one being a corvette, another a frigate and the third a destroyer. The destroyer looks very much like your USS Independence, but I was wondering if the other two have any basis in reality?

Models attached in case anyone wants to tinker with them; they are simple rips, no animations, no underwater part (though there is a texture for it in the dds; Supreme Ruler is kinda weird that way - seems like they first modelled full ships and then cut away their bottoms). Didn't need those for RI, but have nothing against anyone else taking those up.

Great! I've actually already repurposed your hand cannon guys as medieval workers, but having an ancient worker based on your designs would be awesome!

How many ships do Hittites really have? I don't remember much about that, but should be interesting.

This is a valid point unfortunately. All of the bronze age and most of classical antiquity, the Mediterranean had a very clearly defined naval hegemon. In case of the bronze age, it's Egypt, and since Hittites were almost always Egypt's arch-nemesis, they were pretty much denied shipping. Same can be said about Greeks and Carthagians, then Romans in the post-bronze era. They were not big on sharing the pond with anyone else, so most of the ship designs one will see are theirs or based on their designs. Minoan ships, for instance, are very Egypt-based:

Mycenean / Trojan war era boats were pretty uninspired in construction - a kind of a hybrid between a longboat and later Greek shipbuilding:

Overall, here's a great link on Bronze Age Greek shipbuilding: http://www.salimbeti.com/micenei/ships.htm

I was preoccupied with the LCS yesterday. Only just now checked out the galleys Wally shared. I think the Banana boats are pretty well covered.
The missile is actually just reused from the stealth cruiser I did last year. No since reinventing the wheel. I'm surprised no one noticed the helicopter. I scaled it to realistic size, but hard to see in game. :dunno:

I think the other two are "What-Ifs". The "Destroyer"(LOL) is actually a corvette/borderline frigate I think. At least with modern classifications go.

Thanks for the link and the historical info Walter.

A what-if Hittite ship is probably moot then.

Out of curiosity, did the ancient tribes of Libya attempt to venture out onto the pond, or were they under Egyptian naval hegemon from the 'get-go'?

Speaking of Egypt's traditional enemies, here's an interesting one that you might like, @Matsuda123: a Libyan Archer (depicted by the legendary Angus McBride)

Spoiler A quote from "The Warrior Pharaoh: Rameses II and the Battle of Quadesh" :
"The archer shown here wears little save the leather phallus cover and cloak made from bull- hide or giraffe skin, which provided a modicum of protection against arrow fire. Hair was plaited, with an ostrich feather for decoration."

That model was already 99% done except for the hair. Princess Lea buns? :mischief:

Yes, there wasn't too much to change. Bakuel provided a great base to this unit. :)
I finished it up. And now, we have a new Asian face to use on units. Please let me know if it's up to quality standards. We definitely need more workers, and faces... Working on the Kiribati now, and a Mess Industrial age cannon.

Thank you again, MightyToad. And the unit is ready, Walter.

Phoenician Ship, said to be better than the Caravels which discovered the new world. Some say they even reached South america, but who could say.

That one looks nice so far what picture did you base it on?

Banana boats aren't so bad, interesting thing is some Viking ships had a similar design. Pretty much Egyptian ships were the standard until the Greeks came along and they started to evolve into the Hellenistic designs we are all more familiar with.

I forgot to include the XML entry for the Triton:

I basing the hull on this one. The one you are fond of is similar besides the hull. So, won't be difficult to modify it later.

Thank you, an advanced fleet of spaceships, as usual in mods - this is a grim:old: Аnd open мenace to the orbital plans.

If you're interested, In the list of similar things there is also a rocket boat "Klewang". But ship is new. I'm not sure if there is a model of this trimaran

of very nice I love the uniqueness of that egyptian ship! Thankyou for posting the xml for the triton fyi. And of coarse thankyou for sharing your hobby with us.

Don't think I've seen a ship of that shape before Toad....

That Russian stealth ship looks pretty awesome too.

Soviet - Dalek connection confirmed?

My thanks for making the Egyptian ships. I decided to do some reskinning and I made a Galleas for the ships to upgrade into. One day I will upload what I've done, reskins of the Northwest Pacific coast variety.

Walter mentioned the Myceneans. Ships that resembled a cross between a viking longship and the later Triremes used in classical greece.

Did alittle digging and I found the ship that probably influenced the Mycenean ship builders:

iu

Instead of a dragon head that one has what looks like a bird, phoenix maybe? Idk.

iu

There is also this one, with the horse head. The Viking ships were amazing and they even made it to the new world, its said the Phoenician ships were capable of the same, interesting that both cultures built similar designs.

Good resource for native american boats also: http://www.native-languages.org/boats.htm#canoes

Outside of North Africa, I can literally find nothing of the rest of Africa concerning ships. I am sure West africa had them, and definitely Madagascar. I did see one West African river ship but it doesn't look that different from what I've seen made before.
