Ahem.

Or were you meaning something else? :mischief:
 Saw that one coming from a mile away. Niiice...

But yeah, an Australia civ could be interesting, but I don't think it will happen since we already have the Polynesians. Yes, I know they aren't the same, but an Australia civ would likely be a modern version without the Aboriginies. Why? Because IMHO, the Australians first became globally important in WWI. Now I might be wrong, but what possible Leader/UA/UB/UU could they have from before then except for an Aboriginie warrior UU? If they are added, they'll probably be one of the last civs made specifically for Civ5.

That being said, I would definitely DL a player-made version of them if it was fairly high quality?

Just going to point this out The Maya is different from The Mayans. The plural of the Maya is still just "The Maya" rather than "The Mayans"

A little nitpicky i admit

i think i remember someone making an australian civ with a worker for its unit awhile back

anyway, i think i'm still going to go with carthage.

The previous poll I voted The Netherlands, I now picked Carthage. I love seafaring civs - Carthage gets free harbours - and I'm also curious about how the ability to pass mountains will work out.

But it could be that a civ like Austria would fit my play style better...

And I'm looking forward to all of the new ones. I think it says something about Civ 5 that you can get really entousiastic about new civs and their abilities. With previous editions of the game where civs had generic traits this would not have been as much the case.

And the plural of "Mali" is "Malians", but that didn't stop the Civ IV designers...

I'd say I'm looking forward most to Civ 9, simply because based on the geographic distribution so far (Europe, Middle East, Africa, the Americas, temperate Asia) and the way Civ has tended to divide up its regions, a south Asian civ seems most likely to be the final one, and that's the area that most interests me.

EDIT: Without knowing much of what the civs do, I'd go with the Maya thematically of these eight. Frankly the Carthaginian and Austrian UAs sound silly, although a third Civ that makes use of CSes, and one tailored for diplo victory in a different way from Greece, I suspect will be interesting gamewise. As for Ethiopia, how is 'larger civ' defined by the AI? More cities? More population? Higher score? I'm slightly wary of a UA that appears to rely on the AI's judgment to work.

Most likely more land.

Apparently by that gamer who at the Expo. No word other than him though. Haile isn't a bad choice though. Menelik II may get the glory one day (Civ6?)

There isn't a Civ on this list I'm not really looking forward to.

But I voted Celts in the end (same as the original poll) because I know that's the first one I'm going to try when I get the expansion pack.

I think when I first get the expansion pack I am going to set up a continent map with all the new civs on it so I can see all the leader screens. Then I will start a game as Austria

I think I'm still looking forward to the Dutch the most, though the city state theme of Austria sounds interesting.

Ahem.

Mabo with cities would be particularly ironic/farcical.

He was meaning a mod which adds Australia to the game, mod as in Modification instead of mod as in Moderator

glad I am not the only one voting Ethiopia, mabey moar people will look forward to it, when more than just a name is announced....

They look to be very defensive from what is revealed, which isn't very interesting for the human player.
A lot of people will be happy seeing more African flavour in the game, though.

I am excited for all of them, but I really love the Hapsburg family motto: "Let others wage war, but you, happy Austria, shall marry."

I think the Latin for either half of the motto is a badass UA name:
"Bella gerant alii"
OR
"tu felix Austria nube"

Having said that, and voted for Austria, I'm still also very excited about all of them, and will be equally excited by the 9th one, whatever it turns out to be.

I find it interesting in principle. I hadn't remembered it was in Civ 4, and I think generally the Civ 4 Civs deserve a chance to be shown off properly, with their own unique abilities, rather than being essentially anonymous sets of leader traits. Certainly none of them ever gave me a sense "yes, this is what it feels like to play the Khmer/Mali/Celts etc."

I think all of them though will rise and fall on their abilities rather than on the leaders/civs they represent, at least to my mind. That makes it difficult to anticipate any of them more than the others - Austria isn't a civ I'd be interested in in name alone, and calling its UA effect marriage feels off since it's just bizarre that only Austrians can form political alliances through marriage, but an effect that helps CS relations in a way the other civs don't is an ability I can see myself using.

The Dutch could be interesting - on paper from what we know so far they sound like Harun al-Rashid's overpowered cousin, but the trade focus is something that appeals.

Carthage and the Huns strike me as silly and a bit pointless for various reasons (not least among them that neither should really be a civ at all - but then, nor should the Celts or Polynesians).

And while I'm interested in seeing the effects of religion on diplomacy, religion isn't an aspect of the expansion I'm especially interested in (much more interested in espionage and the changes to city-states, and quite looking forward to the WWI units) and I'm not yet sold on the idea of beliefs with in-game effects. So I doubt either Byzantium or the Celts are civs I'd play much.

Not for a domination player, but it has the potential to make them a flexible civ that can focus more towards science or culture victory, and probably culture particularly if the bonus is dependent on other civs controlling more area/land. I think another civ that promotes tall play is welcome for variety.

I think Carthage could be quite good on Archipelago maps. Free trade routes plus an ancient ship and, finally, a unit with a punch to conquer on other islands.

I'm not entirely sure why the most powerful Mediterranean civ for about 200 years with a dominant navy that uniquely combined Phoenician and Greek culture with a little bit of Africa and Spain shouldn't qualify as a civ.

It might have uniquely combined the cultures but it was still, in essence, a city-state. Athens was a dominant civilization in its own right, and yet in Civ it's merely the capital of the Greek civ. Venice dominated the Mediterranean for a similar length of time - it, too, is a city-state in the game.

Free trade routes? I'd thought their UA related to moving across mountains once you'd obtained a great general, which is of generally limited utility and is very poor in contrast to abilities of other conquest-orientated civs.

When they first announced Austra, I thought, "Another non-Poland or Finlnad Euro civ? Seriously? Make a South American civ or something!". Then, I saw their UA, and I instantly fell in love with them. You could even said I married them*. ;)

Spoiler * :
That was bad. Extremely bad. I apologize profoundly for that joke
