Not sure if accurate but if true that ability is broken.

Gold has been the worst yield in a 1:1 comparison in the 2 previous games with production ratios in the 1:3/1:4. It's -25% to ALL other yields. Not sure how exactly these ratios look like in civ7 but this looks more bad than broken.

Maybe being able to convert town to cities though will make gold more valuable in this iteration.

Yep, they are Civ 6 Mali with Stepwells.

I'm curious about their unique civics and traditions.

i promise you if Sepoys are strong at all you will be able to field them in massive quantity and simply zerg other players down.

Yes if the gold:production ratio for these units is low enough and/or gold bonuses grow faster than production bonuses.

Get all the cash you want as Ming/Songhai in the previous era and go on a shopping spree as Mughal.

Marbozir’s review mentions that gold is easy to come by, and he could sometimes just overwhelm the opponents with bought units.

It's a percentage change, not a flat change, so relative yield value can be ignored.

That said, there's more than three other yields in the game that are being reduced so this may indeed not be that great of an ability.

yeah i was thinking spamming Sepoys would be strong strategy. But we will see with the tuning.

Gold can buy buildings and units. So, production isn't missed too much. The Food problem means you're really going to want effective Stepwells (plan ahead!), and few Specialists. It's going to be a civ with lots of Farming towns supporting a few big cities, I think.

But Culture, Science, Influence, and Happiness are going to be sorely missed unless there are modifiers in the unique civics.

Hmm... I guess we'll have to see what the rest of their kit is, but that ability feels... Mildly disappointing? Mughals are definitely one of the modern era civs I was looking forward to, I'd have preferred I think a Civ ability which was more broadly useful, and it really doesn't seem from the previews we've seen that money is a limiting factor for many players. With towns giving gold it looks like you can make it rain pretty easily if you wish. It doesn't seem like trading rarer yields for the most plentiful one is going to be ideal... Judgement somewhat reserved but veering into less excited territory...

Production malus is going to hurt for most of the victory types final projects. And assuming influence is one of the yields with a malus, that could be a real pain as well trying to do anything with diplomacy late. And if it also included a happiness penalty too if that also counts as a yield, it might be really hard to get any celebrations with them.

Piling gold to buy early in the next era is not a strategy unique to Mughal. That would be if they got a discount on buying or if the unit have some extra-incentive to be bought with gold.
It takes actual time after you pick the civ to get a benefit of this ability, at the cost of 25% on multiple other yields.
You have a point though that these previous civs may have synergies regarding legacy policies and buildings/wonders (cant remember exactly).

If there's a civic or tradition that allows you to rush wonders with gold, all will be forgiven.

Seems like both Xerxes would do well with the Mughals with their gold yields and gold modifiers. (And bombard-tastic Sepoys would be nifty for King of Kings).

Augustus's gold buying efficiency in Town looks synergistic as well.

And Isabella could have an even bigger fleet with her cheap naval units and reduced naval maintenance.

This would singlehandedly change this design from fine but uninspired to absolutely fantastic in concept for me.
