It was the largest gathering in the steppes since the days of King Wu’s Great War against the Chitans hundreds of years ago. Across the wide stretch of grass, hundreds of tents have been set up, but they were all emptied for the moment. All the men were mounted on their horses, forming a long line that stretches into the horizon. The females and children stood a short distance behind them. If not for the children still playing with joy, one might have mistaken this display as an army ready to march. At the center of the column was the Chief of the Xiong Nu and his golden family. Clad in golden silk and bronze armour, their royalty was well represented amongst the rugged (and mostly filthy) men of the steppe.
Princess Yue observed all this from her seat atop her favourite mare. Against her maid’s will, she had switched identities with her and instead of being locked in the carrier with her brother; she was free in the outdoors. It was obvious to her and her entourage the meaning of such a “welcome”.
We are the rulers of the steppes, sinified dogs. Dare challenge us, and we will see to it that your nation cease to exist.
Yue’s father has always commented on her gender, about how Yue being born a female was a blessing in disguise. For all the charms and intelligence packed in her 11 year old body, she has a temper and strong headedness to match with it. Had she been present when the Xiong Nu ambassador presented his message, she wasn’t sure if her nation and Xiong Nu wouldn’t already be at war. Instead, her father negotiated this “great hunt” in aims of furthering relations with the northern tribes. It was just as well, for now was her chance to humiliate the Xiong Nu in the very sport that they were most proud of.
The great hunt was a tradition that began hundreds, possibly thousands of years ago. In Yan, it originated from the times of King Wu himself. It was an event where tribes from all over the steppes would participate in, and also one of the rare times when the arrival of these nomads was not coupled with destruction and war. According to the Yan tradition, the event lasts for a whole week. The first several days involved laying traps and scouting the grounds. For the competition to be fair, a neutral territory was always chosen. These several days are the merchant’s favourite time. Hundreds of stalls would be set up at this time, allowing the bored wives and daughters to shop to their heart’s content. The males had no time for such leisure. Mostly they would be found practicing for the event that they were to participate in, or atop their horse scouting the land.
During the middle of the week, a series of competition takes place between the representatives of various tribes. From the simple skill of archery to horseback racing, this was a time when tribes may either become honoured beyond their imagination or ashamed for the following years. Of course, the hunt involves more than merely skill competition. Games which promote friendly competition are included too. The most popular by far is Kokpar, where the teams on horseback compete to grab a headless goat's carcass and drag it into the opponent's goal. Another favourite is Kumis alu, which literally means "pick up the coin." Galloping at full speed, a competitor bends to pick up a coin or handkerchief. More games and sports such as wrestling on horseback exist, but they were all secondary in the mind of Yue. She was particularly interested in the galloping game called kyz kuu. It was a simple game, where she had to race away from a male rider as fast as she can. If the male tried to approach her, she would get to strike at him with a whip. If she reaches the finish line before the male, she can take another few swipes at him. If he reaches the finish line first, she rewards him with a kiss. Needless to say, the males she competed against in the past have never received anything more than whips.
The end of the great hunt would literally be composed of a great hunt, one where the hunting ground stretches for miles. At the day’s end, various prizes are handed out, and the evening is concluded with a giant celebration. Whenever the hunt is held successfully, most parties saved for the ones who suffered accidents and casualties would return home happy and full of wine. This one will be no exception too, or at least that was what Yue promised her father in exchange for allowing her to tag along. That promise is currently throw to the back of her mind, however, as she scanned the members of the golden family for her victims in the upcoming days…
OOC: for the record Yue means moon.
