Nero04: Skipping some levels? It's training day

Just to make sure, the biggest benefit of abandoning cities is not relocation on a ring but preventing them to flip back. Civassist will calculate the flip risk.

Commando- Have you played your turnset yet? I hope you can play it soon, so that I can play mine before Christmas.
One thing you could do to prevent Copenhagen & Odense from flipping is to change them from Barracks to Temples, Markets or Courthouses. We might need Barracks in those cities for units to recover if the war lasts a while. But I think we need the culture in those cities more.
Once we capture Trondheim back, you should probably raze Stockholm, then found another city on your ring. But don't found a city there until you have captured Reykjavik. That way, the odds of the new city flipping will reduce.

I plan to play late this evening or Thursday.

Capturing Tronheim will help in the flipping also. It has a big culture factor and if it goes a lot of the Viking culture goes with it. After that, the biggest worry is Viking resistance in our cities, at least in Odense and Copenhagen.
Once we capture Trondheim back, you should probably raze Stockholm, then found another city on your ring. But don't found a city there until you have captured Reykjavik. That way, the odds of the new city flipping will reduce.
Did Reykjavik become the new Viking capital? You are right, Stockholm has to go, but not right away. If we can get a Great Leader Stockholm is a keeper since it can grow to 12 on its own because of the river next to it. But without a leader, well, its days are numbered.

Commando- I thought you were going to play your turn set before Christmas.

Yes, I thought so too.

I am also in Succession Game of the Month 9 (the current one) and it was my turn. I made some stupid goofs the last turns I played so I was very careful, perhaps too careful, on these turns. To play 10 turns took over 18 game hours! Real time was close to two days. And an upset wife. So I backed off of this one, but only for a short time.

nerovats said:
C-Bob, are you gona play?
Remeber if you gona buy flowers to make up with the wife, never buy rozes :D
I plan to play this evening.

I didn't buy her flowers; I got her 'Seafarers of Catan' and the 5-6 player expansion set for Christmas. And I got a good gift for our 20 year old son (a Star Wars Lego set of Slave 1, Boba Fett's spaceship). I have not played a Civ turn since then, so I have mended those fences (and I am ready to play).

And the save is >here<.

Some things went well in these ten turns. We captured Trondheim and Reykjavik.

Some things did not go so well. Trondheim flipped back, the Great Library expired, Bergen and Oslo did not fall, and the Vikings are in their Golden Age.

Did I mention we are losing money? And our only elite unit has not generated a Great Leader yet?

These need to be priorities in the next turnset:
  • Keep making military units.
  • Capture of Bergen and Trondheim, and maybe Oslo.

Battle Plans
While my battles did not go well (12 victories in 21 attacks) we still have the military edge, even considering the Viking Berserk. We have 12 swords and 16 maces, with 13 more maces in production. The trick is get them together to do the most good.

We have to be aware of the Berserk, but maybe not for long. The Viking built two Berserks that we know of, in Bergen and Oslo, and both are dead. These units cost 70 gold each. The Vikings have 26 gold in treasury now, thanks to their Golden Age, which began in 450 AD and ends in 650 AD. They might be able to rush a Berserk before we take Bergen and Trondheim, but could not rush two.

The biggest worry with the Berserk is its Amphibious Assault that could pose a problem for our coastal cities. If any more are built, I expect them to be involved in the land battles, not the sea battles or coastal raiding. However, it would still be prudent to keep defenders in our coastal cities.

In the maps below are plans for how to capture Bergen and Trondheim.

Bergen Battle Plans 480 AD
480AD_BergenBattlePlans.jpg

Bergen is cut off from iron, so after this Pikeman is gone, the best defender they could have would be a Berserk or a spear. The most likely defender will be a spear.

On the first turn, the mace on the hill southeast of the city moves to the mined grassland. Another mace will arrive from the east this turn. Two more maces and two swords will approach from the south, and will be at the hill in two turns. The first mace, on its second turn, we need to pillage the mined grassland. If we had forces coming in from the north (we did, but they are dead now), we could spread them out to deny the BG tiles north of Bergen. On the third turn we should be able to begin the final assault of Bergen.

Trondheim Battle Plans 480 AD
480AD_TrondheimBattlePlans.jpg

When we recapture Trondheim, we free up a lot of tiles for rapid movement. Our forces here are not quite as strong as those attacking Bergen, but the defenders are weaker; just spears.

In two turns we will have catapults, swords and maces just outside the city. We will begin with catapults, and then try to get a Great Leader with our elite sword.

Oslo Battle Plans 480 AD
480AD_OsloBattlePlans.jpg

This is a delaying action while we clean up the rest of the map. Our units are weak, but after Bergen and Trondheim are taken, those units can quickly head east and concentrate on Oslo. Until then, just keep hitting at it with catapults, and hope for the best.

Oslo in on a hill, which is sometimes hard to tell.

Roads
480AD_JungleRoads.jpg

We now have a road through the jungle north of Copenhagen to the Spanish core. This means that new units from Barcelona and Murcia do not have to go through Odense to fight Vikings. Head to Copenhagen and turn left or right as needed.

We almost have roads to connect Bergen and Reykjavik. The latter will be connected in two turns, the road to Bergen a little bit longer. We have workers in place that could connect to Bergen in two turns. They would be guarded by one mace, which is not enough to handle a sneak attack from Bergen. Two maces would be fine, but not one. So I moved these workers to the mountain east of Bergen, where they can make a mountain road as quick as a jungle road. Once that is done, they can move to the hill and begin to road that also.

As a general rule, it is better to have a group of workers complete something fast, that can be used/worked by a city or units, instead of having many workers all working on something different. We have jungle roads because the workers were combined into work groups that could build a jungle road in two turns. The other way would have taken nine turns, if one worker worked on each tile of the road.

We need roads for communicated and movement. After we take care of the Vikings, we need to focus on England. She has a better economy than the Vikings and will have knights. England has 14 cities, second only to Spain in city count. We will need roads up to the English border and some improvement near our cities. Clearing jungles can wait. That takes 24 worker turns to clear one tile. It only takes 6 turns to build a mine in plains or grassland.

I got the save.

I hope your combats are better than mine were. I got in a rush with Bergen and Reykjavik and Oslo and chanced battles I should not have. I needed more units. I keep forgetting that when we battle in on their turf our guys do not heal. Seems so obvious, but I keep overlooking it.

(Catching up at work)
Quite a haul, capturing four cities in ten turns! :)

And I see the jungle road made it into Bergen. Good, we can move units west to east much faster now.

Need to remove Oslo and that H name city.

Zulus wanna fight, eh? I wonder if we can sign any MAs against the Zulus; gotta check.

Plan to look at it in more detail later this evening.

Looks good!

I downloaded the save and looked at it briefly. I may be able to play some turns this evening. I hope to be able to settle the Viking issue by capturing Oslo and that H-town in my turns.

How do we want to win?

I always leave all VC's open but can aim for space, if that appears to be difficult we can change our minds.
That was way back on Page 1, Post #20. We were aiming for space victory first or a culture victory. This has become more difficult as the game has progressed. To gain the stars, we need to be a lot smarter than what we are. To win by culture, we need more culture, especially temples, since they are cheap for us.
But we need a plan.

Space/Culture
I think we can win the Space Victory and maybe a Culture Victory, but to do so we have to stop the other civs in their quest for techs and culture. In order to stop the other civs we will need to stop their ability to research and gain culture. We have two ways to do that, indirect action and direct action.

Indirect Action
By indirect action I am referring to Military Alliances. We have one now with England against the Vikings. We could use one against the Persians, since they have the highest culture (over 4000 points) and growing culture the fastest (over 100 points per turn, but they could be in a Golden Age). They are the front runner. It would be nice if we could join the Ottomans (2nd place culture) and the Babylonians (3rd place culture) in an MA against Persia. However, first we need embassies with these people and we will probably need a lot of cash to buy the MAs. Not too feasible in the near future (20-40 turns).

Direct Action
Direct action is somewhat easier. We declare war, attack the cities, keep what we want and raze the rest. The doing is the hard part. Embassies are not needed, but overseas transport is.

In either case, our goal is to reduce each civ to one or two cities, but not eliminate them. This is to help us in our research. First, while we are getting ready to reduce each civ, they will continue to research and trade their techs with each other. As more civs know a technology, the cost goes down. When all the other civs know some new tech, we can shop around and get the best deal for it. Also, by reducing them to one or two cities each, we stop their research, since they now have at most only two libraries/universities to help learn new things. By this time, our own research could be in place to allow us to learn new techs in a reasonable time period (less than 10 turns, 4 would be great).

Both ways involve a lot of warfare first in order to be smart later. We would have to be careful not to win by Domination.

Conquest
Or we could decide not to go to space and just conquer the world, which would be much easier. Like we are doing now, we pick a victim and attack them until they are gone. And repeat until we have conquered the world.

With just two of us, regardless of which VC we select, it will be a lot of work. And in the short term (my ten turns), it does not affect what has to be done as we finish the Viking war. It does affect how we look at England, but not greatly.

Either way, we both have a lot of learning to do as we finish this game.

How do you think we ought to win?

Got some time to get good look at save, so here is my 0,02.

Why are we building temples again and why are there so many settlers unused?

I'd move the 3 MI from around Odense towards Hareid, over the mountains. Move the wounded units near Oslo on the mountain and into the stack. Move out cats from Trondheim as it's got a huge flip risk, might be even better to disband and replace it. Move other MI towards Oslo. Since we have no alliance we can make peace after taking those last 2 cities which should just take 4 more turns.

Knights are a lot more powerful then MI so I suggest to change all current builds to knights. we have 6 settlers so better not produce any more until we can use them. We can rush them lateron in corrupt cities when needed.

We appear to be close in techs, and will be able to claim a lot from english when we pushed them of of our continent (also take the island and just leave them Leeds). Tht should just about get us on par with the other civ's. There's absolutely no problem in catching up and overtaking the AI on techs. Especially if we get our second core up.

Using 1 scientist is a lot cheaper then keeping science at 10%. Lux is to high as well. In quick management operation I got this save up to +21 gpt.
Building improvements in fromer scandinavia is not very usefull until we get an FP there (or jump the palace). Seville could build the FP in 14 turns, then jump palace to Copenhagen giving us 2 productive cores, and reducing flip chances as former Viking cities wil then be closer to our capitol then to their last island city. Civassist will tell where the capitol will flip, just move a lot of units into the town.

Nobody has gunpowder yet so everyone is easily beatable with a combination of cats and MI/knights. Start preparing to invade England. Take norwich with some knights, start moving the MI south now. Just leave a handfull on strategic locations, and close to the Persian city. Take a ship with some pikes to pillage their iron, and maybe their powder as soon as we can see if they got any. Keep those pikes on the hill, 2 or even better 4 should do the trick. Without it they are sitting ducks.

Once we got this continent all victory conditions are very much possible. We'll have by far the biggest territory and some good land, especially after clearing the jungle. For space we'll need lot of libs and uni's.
To win culturally we could ISC and buy a temple, lib and a cathedral in all cities. Just get enough cities, and we'll overtake all AI. Could build an invasion force and raze the core's of civ's which are growing fast like Persia, but that is probably not even neccesary.
Diplo is also an option as we just messed with some civs, make friends with the others (sign RoP, trade, gift) and we'll be ok.
Domination/conquest , arabs seem weak (no horse no iron) and would make a nice landing place as it's close. Also Babylon seems doable, as their iron is pilligable as well, but they are likely to have powder. Sign alliance with Zulu and Ottomans and they will face a 360 degree frontline. They should be enough for dommination.

Well I did not know where to put settlers where they could be productive. It seemed too early to put them around Trondheim, but I could have just been too cautious and careful.

Trondheim has the Great Library, though its benefits are gone.

I did not get to play last night, so these changes can be made on the IBT.

I keep forgetting that the FP changes the corruption calculation. I have it stuck in my mind that the FP is RCP based, when only the capital is.

Buy embassies this IBT? We only have two, Vikings and England.

Buying embasies is no must, also could depend on wether you want to conquer the other continent as well. Then it's nice to get embasies just beore invading so you get a more or less free look at their capitol. But building them now will improve their attitude (at least that's my experience) and you could always investigate some cities just be fore invading. When going for peacefull VC I would get them now.

I need to be skipped this turnset. I've been sick lately and not been able to play my turns and it will be the weekend before I could get back to this game.

I have not made any changes to the last saved game.

Sorry.
