pre-release info New Civ Game Guide: Mexico

pre-release info
Interesting design.

So, apparently, if you lack culture, Mexico is the civ to choose. I like the focus on celebrations.

But I hoped to see some indication of the victory conditions with the reveal, and I didn't catch one.

I'm less in awe of the names, which are mostly bland translations of what everybody else is having/doing. And "Order and Progress" is the motto of another civ that we might eventually see...

I'm also not in awe of the generic buildings. They look so dark and ugly against the (nice looking) uniques and the (splendid looking) wonder. Some more colorful or even just brighter textures would help a whole lot here.

The bomber unit (or at least the bomber model used by Mexico) appears to be modelled off the German Heinkel 177 Greif. Art team knocked it out of the ball park yet again. Look forward to seeing more modern age unit models.

It's interesting to note two things:

1. Mexico doesn’t receive an increase in settlement limits, encouraging the civ to play tall, which I somewhat expected.

2. The Revolucionarios make Mexico moderately militaristic.

However, militaristic civs usually require higher settlement limits, which Mexico lacks. This suggests that Mexico is a civ that will likely play tall and defensively. The Revolucionarios will be more focused on defense rather than offense. All of this feels quite unique and interesting to me.

Finally, we don’t see Haciendas here. Are they reserved for another civ? We’ll find out in the future.

If Gran Columbia is our Modern South American civ, I'd bet on them getting it.

I was just about to post that.

It's kind of an obscure aircraft to use as a model. The 177 was produced in far fewer numbers than the 111, had a weird experimental engine configuration (that made it prone to overheating), and generally had little effect on the progress of the war.

I don't think the similarly colored mountains are helping, either. It all sort of blends together, dark orange with the occasional splash of pretty orange. However inaccurate it would be, I think colors similar to the UB and AW on everything would pop a bit more. This is the first city screenshot that hasn't wowed me, despite the individually beautiful buildings.

Incredibly obscure. Though I wouldn't dare complain with a model as accurate and good looking as that. Perhaps they felt the 177 better encapsulated the look of a heavy strategic bomber due to its bulk.

Design, particularly the celebration aspect, seems real unique! I like it! Love the culture bonuses as well.

So the civ ability doesn’t really seem like a bonus…

It locks you into a single government that has a culture celebration bonus—but I thought 1 government in each tier already gave that. Like Classical Republic in antiquity.

Is there any other bonus that this government type grants?
One other thought...if there are Ideologies, Mexico can "play both sides"

Like how the design all works together.

Although, Like the Normans and the Ming, They will be at a bit of a disadvantage if they do an advanced start (less Traditions)

I'm curious if all the Celebration bonuses that unlock with the civics are simultaneous bonuses or if they are more options that you choose from. Both are good, but the latter requires strategic decision-making

Ok, really happy with most of it, (honestly It's just a few names that kinda sound wonky for a Spanish speaker.) Really pleased how they took the many turmoils in Mexican history and weaved them into the revolutionary theme, also on using the different plans (I'm sure your historians had seizure with how many damn plans there are in Mexican history), but I think you boiled it down to the most important, independence, La Reforma, and Porfiriato. with the government and flavour leaning hard into the Mexican Revolution. *claps*

Attributes:
Cultural
Diplomatic
Was not expecting Diplomatic, but I can see it, do your best to keep neighboors happy while you push ahead culturally. really curious to see how this will interact with the Unique government.

Also the civic tree besides the really spot on flavour, seem really dinamic, I hope It's not a linear tree, allowing you to pivot to culture, military or science depending on what you need.

Unique Ability:
Revolución:
Start with a unique Government type, Revolución. This Government has one Celebration effect, granting Increased Culture boost for a set number of turns. Cannot enter any other Government type.
just..."revolución" honestly sounds a bit, weird, please Firaxis if you ever took one bit of feedback from me, just switch it to. "La Revolución", It's rather ingrained into our minds as La revolución, which would be literally translated as THE Revolution, this way everybody in Mexico would get what you are talking about, and it wouldn't be as odd.

Unique Infrastructure:
Zócalo:
Unique Quarter. Increased Culture for every Unique Tradition slotted into the Government.
Catedral: Unique Building. Culture base. Receive a Happiness Adjacency from Culture Buildings.
Portal de Mercaderes: Unique Building. Culture base. Receive a Gold Adjacency from Gold Buildings.
Love that Catedral design, it really looks the part. Portal de Mercaderes is such a nice touch, I really like to see old photos of cities that were filled with Portales everywhere. (the covered archways facing the streets flanking most old buildings.)

Zocalo as a quarter was a given, it makes perfect sense.

really happy more thought was put into this than just Haciendas or Taquerias, love it.
Unique Civilian Unit:
Revolucionario: Unique Great Person Unit. Can only be built in a City with a Zócalo Unique Quarter, and the specific Revolucionario received is random. Each Revolucionario can only be received once. Cost increases per Revolucionario built.
Called it, really happy with the choices, really surprised with the highlight to so many women during the mexican revolution.
and..don't take it the wrong way, but ugh, Santa Anna, maybe It's because he's so familiar with the US market, but that man is public enemy #1 in Mexico, would you by any chance be able to switch him to Ignacio Zaragoza? just saying, 5 de Mayo is also recognizable in the US and the ability also fits him. (I might need to learn to mod lol)

Also....Benito is in, Zapata is in....no Porfirio, *that's kinda sus* Porfirio Diaz leader maybe?

Unique Military Unit:
Soldaderas: Unique Infantry Unit. Adjacent Units heal a set number of hit points; this effect does not stack.
While there were full units of Soldaderas fighting forces during the revolution, most of the Soldaderas were women who escentially took the heavy blunt of the logistics of keeping an army fed and supported, the healing effect is a nice nod to that.

Associated Wonder:
Palacio de Bellas Artes:
Culture Base. Increased Happiness on Great Works. Increased Happiness in this City. Has a set number of Great Works slots. Must be built adjacent to an Urban District.
Yes, so much yes.

Starting Biases:
Desert
Plains
Now this one...its so weird, Mexico is just not a...flat country, I was really expecting rough terrain if Im honest. It's like seeing "mountain" for The Neatherlands.

Overall I really like the flavour, the unique government, the plans, traditions, and the very non-stereotypical depiction of Mexico, I could show this to the average Mexican and all of this will be recognizable. I'm really thinking of going into a Rome-Spain-Mexico run, there's just so much bonus and adjacencies to culture, gold, and bonuses for unique traditions.

Beyond thrilled about the Mexico design. Beyond thrilled that Mexico finally and deservingly made the game!

Fear not, Brazil lovers, I’m sure you will find them return alongside Portugal soon enough! I also wonder if we get Peru or Bolivia this go around along with a culture like the Moche for the Inca to transition from/to…obviously not yet but in the future

Diplomatic is also all things related to Government, including Celebrations and Policies.

I think that for Modern Hispanic South America they will go either with Argentina or Colombia. Both of them can transition from Spain and from the Inca. After all, the Inca had territories in Argentina and Colombia/Ecuador and there are still Quechua Indigenous people in both Argentina and Colombia.

It would be cool to see the Mapuche return in the future, as well as having the Muisca in the Exploration Age.

One other thought...if there are Ideologies, Mexico can "play both sides"
Which historically Mexico kinda did during the cold war. really curious how it will play out when we know specific modern mechanics

Fantastic design, and I'm so happy to see Mexico in civ

The only thing I miss is some cool Mexican leader
Notable abscence of both Francisco Madero and Porfirio Diaz on the revolucionarios list. I think those are out 2 main candidates if Mexico is to get a leader.

Desert, Plains=/=Flat,
Plains/Grassland/Tropical/Desert/Tundra...
Those are base Terrains so you can have plains-hills or plains-mountains
Oh I see, well that makes sense, I guess if you go Mayans-Spain-Mexico you could model Mexican geography pretty well.

Excited to see a Mexico civ at last! I guess Zapata is out as a leader, but hopefully we will see a different Mexican leader…
